When I ordered my engine, I told Pete which model plane it was for, and I was sent a Sensenich W62HJ46....so it's a Wooden 62" dia x 46" pitch...the H and the J are H=load factor (or something like that) and the J is for the Jabiru bolt pattern. And like Michel's experience, my prop is not a great climb performer, but does the cross-country thing well, and handled recent high density altitudes out west just fine. I'm the third owner of a Kitfox 7, so only god knows where they been. Is this film clear or colored?? Mine appear to be clear plain aluminum but rubbing my hand across the finish does not feel right. I have intensely gone over the flaperons and can't find anything film to lift off. I stored my flaperons by hanging them on a wall in my shop for about 7-8 years. The side against the wall came off easily. The side exposed to the room and natural light and artificial light (florescent) was very difficult to remove. So UV plays a role. C. This may be the clue we've been looking for. My flaperons were stored for 16 years in my garage and the film came off perfectly on both sides. BUT, mine we're hung on a wall on the dark side of the garage, where very little light ever hit them. Given David's experience described in his previous posting, it could very well be that UV light makes the film brittle, as it does many plastics. The film is very thin and may deteriorate quickly. Perhaps the answer for long term storage is to wrap the flaperons with something, or keep them covered so light can't get to them. Clem KF IV, 912 Lawton, OK I stored my flaperons by hanging them on a wall in my shop for about 7-8 years. The side against the wall came off easily. This is an old topic that rears up every so often and you're correct, it's the UV that is causing the plastic to get brittle. Your recommendation is a good one Clem; however to ensure that there are no problems down the road it's probably best to remove the covering as soon as you get them, then hang them up somewhere safe. That covering is only on there to protect the aluminum during shipping. Clem, I haven't done it with the Matco. I changed out the whole thing. The only thing you might have an issue with is the axle diameter and the bearings. The bearings that come with the wheel are not sealed and will eventually start making a noise of their own. In fact the sealed bearings that Aircraft Spruce sells as replacement bearings have an inner diameter that is too large for the Homebuilders wheel assembly - I've yet to figure that one out. The homebuilders wheel has a 1/2" axle. I think the replacement bearings have a 5/8" inner diameter. If your Matco has a 1/2" axle you would be good to go. Unless there is something I am not aware of that is perticular to your wheel assembly. What you might try is getting the wheel, check out the bearing size and if it needs a different inner size or if you want to just start with a sealed bearing from the get-go, go to http://www.bocabearings.com/ , use their bearing finder and order a pair that will fit and are sealed. The ones I bought are R1621-2RSNR . They're not cheap ~ $17each, but the wheel is good for sound reduction and the bearings should pretty much last a lifetime. You will need bearings with the snap ring as the wheel hub is machined straight through without shoulders to retain the bearings.. Ray: Is this new or have you always had the noise? I'm not a radio expert and we have some on the list who will know alot more than me, but I'll take a shot. If noise has always been there, I suspect you have some insufficiently shielded wire in your radio set-up. When I was wiring mine, I'd heard alot about radio interference from ignition and strobes so was careful to use shielded wire for all radio connections. Also I used braided copper shielding on all strobe wiring and any ignition related wiring on the cabin side of the firewall. Must have done something right because I've had no problems with the kind of noise you're experiencing. If noise is new-out-of-the-blue, I haven't a clue. How about it radio-heads? Ray, as Marco said -is this something thats been present all the time? A real important question. What kind of engine do you have, as well intercom and radio. From your limited information about the setup, I think this is a grounding problem of your PMG(permanent magnet generator) or generator setup. This because you said that the NAV light create (same?) noise similar as the strobes do when switched on. Then the noise is present when the generator has to deliver "some more" current, right? I'll think your problem is in the ground path, however, same thing can happen in the positive feeder circuit (your el. BUS system). Check that the ground (black for most Rotax engines) is routed directly to battery -pole (the battery ground). This is a often seen problem. Just route your gen. ground there and make a little run up to check if the noise still appear. If noise still is present, noise must come from the positive side of your el. system. Imagine a feeder BUS, with the generator input on one side, and the battery on the other side. All the users, light, radios etc. is hooked up in between on this BUS. This latter one is typical for noise created in the positive power "feeder" line, however, in this situation we often use a big capacitor as a "noise" filter to get read of noise from the generator system. Just for test, -it might be wise to connect the generator output directly to the battery positive terminal, but remember to include a circuit breaker(or a fuse, say 15 Amp) and a generator switch. Then you might ask, why connecting the gen. "directly" to the battery? This because the battery is the largest el. power reservoir in the plane and can easily blank out generator noise if it's done properly. Good luck. Torgeir. The only other advice I have is if you are expecting some foul weather and you have your plane pulled up tail on. It's a good idea to pump water into the compartments of the floats to give them more weight and keep the plane from rocking in any waves hitting the shore ( fresh water) Keeping the plane from moving is important because that's when damage is done to both the plane and the floats. After the storm you only have to pump out the floats to be able to move the plane again. Subject: Noise?
I think the others who have already responded to your question have some excellent ideas. I have at least one question... What kind of noise? A few suggestions: 1.Make sure there is a good strong grounding strap that connects the frame of the aircraft to the engine. Engine mounts are essentially insulators and control cables etc. don't make for good electrically solid ground. 2.make sure all the interconnect cables in your audio set up have the shields grounded at one end only. Grounding the cable at both ends makes a Benjamin Arnold ( to the US guys) out of your shielding. Grounding at both ends can instead of protecting from interference, actually add to interference 3. physically separate the wires of the nav lights and strobes from the wires of the audio panel. If the main wires of your audio panel and your coax is routed down the right side of the plane then route the nav light and strobe cables down the left side. 4. Try to arrange any place where the nav light or the strobe light cables have to cross the audio wires, have them cross at right angles to each other. Wires crossing at right angles have less ability to radiate or receive interference from each other. TV studios used to hire people to specifically keep their camera cables crossing at right angles to subdue interference. I second Guy's recommendation. They had a fix that I used to keep that exact noise from being recorded onto the video tapes I was shooting. The fix I used was a Radio Shack kit that Bob recommended that you could either put in the feed line to the strobe or the feed line to the camera power (radio or intercom). I put them on camera and strobe with good result. Regarding the wiring, I also agree with Noel's comments and wired according to those recommendations. As an aside, I am putting our 2004 flight of eight to Oshkosh on the HighWing LLC website weekly video segment. http://highwingllc.com/.html This week's one and a half minute segment has the annoying sound that prompted the filters, near the end of the clip just before the sound, for some reeason, goes belly up. (I rendered the video twice and got the same result - the original video file is fine.) To check the difference after the filter installation, click on: Flight of eight departing Hamilton, MT. in the Archive section. The reason there is no sound on the first Oshkosh clips is the annoying strobe sound - I eliminated the sound track. Also for those interested, a new camera installation has no provision for mike input so I have to record the sound on a separate unit. Makes for major effort to get the sound syncronized. Hence, some of the clips have no sound.
