Is this film clear or colored?? Mine appear to be clear plain aluminum but rubbing my hand across the finish does not feel right. I have intensely gone over the flaperons and can't find anything film to lift off. I stored my flaperons by hanging them on a wall in my shop for about 7-8 years. The side against the wall came off easily. The side exposed to the room and natural light and artificial light (florescent) was very difficult to remove. So UV plays a role. C. All the plastic I have ever seen on flaperons was white. the aluminum is bright as a mirror right after the plastic is peeled off. If there was some clear stuff on them I am sure you would see it easily. Especially on the ends where it would be peeled up a little. My flaperons were stored for 16 years in my garage and the film came off perfectly on both sides. BUT, mine we're hung on a wall on the dark side of the garage, where very little light ever hit them. Given David's experience described in his previous posting, it could very well be that UV light makes the film brittle, as it does many plastics. The film is very thin and may deteriorate quickly. Perhaps the answer for long term storage is to wrap the flaperons with something, or keep them covered so light can't get to them. Your recommendation is a good one Clem; however to ensure that there are no problems down the road it's probably best to remove the covering as soon as you get them, then hang them up somewhere safe. That covering is only on there to protect the aluminum during shipping. I changed out the whole thing. The only thing you might have an issue with is the axle diameter and the bearings. The bearings that come with the wheel are not sealed and will eventually start making a noise of their own. In fact the sealed bearings that Aircraft Spruce sells as replacement bearings have an inner diameter that is too large for the Homebuilders wheel assembly - I've yet to figure that one out. The homebuilders wheel has a 1/2" axle. I think the replacement bearings have a 5/8" inner diameter. If your Matco has a 1/2" axle you would be good to go. Unless there is something I am not aware of that is perticular to your wheel assembly. What you might try is getting the wheel, check out the bearing size and if it needs a different inner size or if you want to just start with a sealed bearing from the get-go, go to http://www.bocabearings.com/ , use their bearing finder and order a pair that will fit and are sealed. The ones I bought are R1621-2RSNR . They're not cheap ~ $17each, but the wheel is good for sound reduction and the bearings should pretty much last a lifetime. You will need bearings with the snap ring as the wheel hub is machined straight through without === message truncated == --------------------------------- Be a PS3 game guru. The windshield on my Speedster has developed a long crack and will have to be replaced. Some time back there was a discussion on the list about replacing windshields but I am not smart enough on computers to be able to find it in the archives. If I remember correctly someone wrote that there was a company that made permolded windshields for the kitfox. I would appreciate it if someone would send me the infromation on this company and their experience with this premolded windshield. Thanks Floran Higgins Helena, Mt. Speedster 912ULS

I'm in the market for a cabin cover for my Series 5. Weight, Volume, Cost & Sun Resistance will be the deciding factors. I see three options (Sam Knight @ $225, Kitfox A/C @ $350 and Kennon @ $395) Any others? Any recommendations from happy or unhappy customers? Any used ones someone is looking to get rid of? Feel free to contact me on or off list. Grant Krueger Series 5 _________________________________________________________________

Floran, Make sure to consider the alternative too. You can usually purchase a flat sheet of polycarbonate (Lexan) locally. It's not very expensive at all. Lay it down and put your old windshield right on top of it. Trace a round the outside and the mounting holes and cut it out. I've used saber saws and /or a band saw. Drill out the mounting holes and deburr. Be su re to make them slightly larger to allow for expansion and contraction. Use a file and /or sandpaper along the outside edge and you're ready to peel off the protective paper and install. Do the skylight section first and work your way forward. Voila, you're new windshield is ready to kil l more bugs. Premolded windshields in my opinion are about the same amount of work, are heavier, and must be shipped in a large box. I've changed my lexan windshield twice over the years and found it to be quick and simple. Be sure to get opinions and experiences of other guys on the list too and t hen make your decision from there. The film on my flaperons is clear and very hard to see, but it is there. When you peel it off, it actually has a slight blue tint to it. You can get a hold of it by making a small cut across a corner with a razor blade and then peeling from the cut. -------- Don McIntosh Series 7 under construction 912S (probably) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=122360#122360

Sorry all, The picture did not turn out on the site. I used a 20,000 mfd 30V capacitor to stop the strobe noise. Wire it so that the 12v line from the regulator to the + on the capacitor, ground to - . I used a capacitor from Radio shack and it wasn't exact, but it works well. A good $5 fix. Sorry about the previous poor posting. Larry

I am in the same boat. I was going to get the premolded one but have decided against it due to the $500 bill for the molded one. I use the landshorter.com ones. I noticed right off the bat that I had a more stable flight in rough conditions, put in the right spot, 10percent of the cord back, no decrease in top speed. I did notice that my turns are like on rails, steep turns are fantstic. I can do a 60 mph 90degree bank with lots of elevator and no stall, it will shake, but not drop out. Of course the big thing is to keep coordinated in flight. Another thing I do that is way cool, don't know if the vg do anything, is a runway run just off stall, I can go back and forth over the runway, 150ft wide runway, and touch down while doing it in different spots with the greatest of ease. I've graduated to doing this flat winged, meaning no bank, way fun. flat turns are fun and happen real easily, this helps out if there is traffic and you want to see around you, just opposite aileron and put a bunch of rudder in for the direction of turn, flat wing and turn your baby. pretty cool and fun as well. people on the ground get pretty impressed and if you have a passenger thay think it's pretty weard. -------- kitfoxmike model IV, 1200 speedster 912ul building RV7a slowbuild wings, fuse, finish kit "if you're not getting razzed from pilots or the FAA then you're not flying enough" Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=122385#122385

Don't go over .090 thick. precut as specified in previous post. start from the back and when you get to the bend, heat with a heat gun and let it droop over the edge, then continue. I would say test with a scrap piece on the heating to get the process and amount of heat first. When done, go over the heavy bends with the heat gun again to releive stress areas. -------- kitfoxmike model IV, 1200 speedster 912ul building RV7a slowbuild wings, fuse, finish kit "if you're not getting razzed from pilots or the FAA then you're not flying enough" Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=122386#122386

Mine has a moderate amount of crazing, and I would like to replace it, but would hate to get in over my head and wind up with no windshield at all. Incidentally, I recently came across Skystar Service Bulletin #34 dated May 1, 1994 in which they recommended the use of .090" thick polycarbonate instead of the .118" they originally supplied to make the windshield. Their position was that the .118" material was more prone to cracking/crazing during installation and that the .090" caused no decrement in performance or safety. You can usually purchase a flat sheet of polycarbonate (Lexan) locally. It's not very expensive at all. Lay it down and put your old windshield right on top of it. Trace around the outside and the mounting holes and cut it out. I've used saber saws and /or a band saw. Drill out the mounting holes and deburr. Be sure to make them slightly larger to allow for expansion and contraction. Use a file and /or sandpaper along the outside edge and you're ready to peel off the protective paper and install. Do the skylight section first and work your way forward. Voila, you're new windshield is ready to kill more bugs. Premolded windshields in my opinion are about the same amount of work, are heavier, and must be shipped in a large box. I've changed my lexan windshield twice over the years and found it to be quick and simple. Be sure to get opinions and experiences of other guys on the list too and then make your decision from there. Clem, No problem at all. Mine had almost no memory of being couped up on the p lane. I simply layed it on top and traced. It's lighter, way less expens ive and quite simple to do. As a matter of fact, last time I bought a sh eet of the .090 Lexan, I made two windshields. Down the road when this o ne, needs replacement, I'll be ready to go. Of course, always use the or iginal cracked windshield as your pattern for the rest, so don't discard it. I understand some people do some heating of the windshield to make the bends. Just for the record, I did not use additional heat. I did it in a warm hangar, but that's all. It's working fine. Some have used heat and used too much. That's a problem too. I also changed my windshield on my Avid. Took the old one off and used it for a pattern and it really was quite simple. If you don't have the old one, I'm sure it would be harder, mainly because you're not sure you're doing it right. Clem, Fly over to Murray some time and I will help you out. I have made wind two for the Kolb and a set of doors for the Kolb so I have developed a system that makes it a half day job. The biggest pain will be drilling out all the rivets for the old one and I have a tool for that. -------- _______________________________________ Giovanni Day Model 4 speedster 912 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=122413#122413
