    Subject: Re: Fuel Transfer
Tom, On my model 4 I ran 2 wing tanks and a 10 gal panel tank. The wing tanks were plumbed into the top of the panel tank with 1/4 tygon tubing that ran down the inside forward door post. Each wing tank had a shutoff and the panel tank was vented back to the right wing tank. After I filled the wing tanks I had a piece of tygon tubing I would put on the cap and gently blow until the line was flowing full and then shut off, then when I was flying and wanted to transfer I opened the wing valve and would get solid flow, if I ever lost flow in flight I was normally able to slip and get it folwing again. I did an experiment once and removed the vent line from the wing tank and put it up through the top right rear canopy, thus allowing the ram pressure from the wing tank cap to pressurize the tank and not the return vent, flow was great but I opted not to leave it that way in case I would start transfer and forget I could be pushing fuel out of the plane, I also pre mixed. Subject: windshield
When I ordered the preformed windshield from Kitfox I was told that It would take two weeks to get delivery. Rather than being AOG I decided to repair the crack as per AC 43.13-1B. As I was finishing lacing the crack I heard a loud pop and discovered the other side of the windshield had cracked exactly as the first side, so I wound up lacing the other side as well. Apparently when you make these windshields out of flat sheet it causes a lot of stress at the compound curve at the wing root. This is the second windshield that I have had to replace due to this problem. This second one is only about three years old and had almost no crazing prior to cracking. I hope this new preformed one doesn't have the same stresses. Floran Higgins Helena, Mt. Speedster 912ULS

This morning I started the process of wiping the 2210 solvent over my first coat of Poly Spray which generated a serious amount of static electric poping. I'm sure this has come up before, but I was wondering if anyone has used a grounding method while doing this? I was able to see the 4th fireworks and just not interested in an encore :>) Thanks, Dan B Mesa, AZ KF-IV

Hi, Anybody have one for sale. I want to put it on floats. Should have a rotax, 80 ok but would prefer a 100hp. At least one panel navcom. An intercom and transponder would be nice. Also aux elec power via a cig lighter would be nice. Perfect fabric, any color. How's that for a wish list? Larry 954 673 1896 ca also use email.. lpfrank@alum.mit.edu Thanks for looking

Dan One member set his wing on fire using that procedure. Another member suggested a 50/50 mix of IPA and dist H2O. I used that method with excellent results. About grounding, I tried running wires to the frame or spars and to the paint gun. Gave up on that, too much trouble. The IPA/H2O wipedown generated no static charge - which is good here in dry Nevada. Hi Dan, Yes, a subject covered before, unfortunately after I finished my plane.... I was told that you can spray the air with static guard right before doing your work and that should help. A conductor touching your wing's paint, especially a little of the silver coat, and then to any ground should help too. Let us know if the static guard works. Unfortunately, the forward facing vents do not usually promote transfer as they pressurize the system end to end. They do increase the pressure at the outlet, which is good, and help if there is some kind of obstruction that generates a significant internal pressure drop. >I was thinking of putting siphon bulbs such as from boat remote >tanks into the fuel lines in the cabin. I would appreciate any other ideas. As offered by others, first go through and check your lines. Pull both ends and blow. Any significant resistance should be checked out. There have been fuel lines that swelled shut internally, with no evidence externally. If everything checks out, check your line sizes. I use 3/8" from the wing tanks to the header and on to the fuel valve. From there I go to 1/4" to the pump and on to the carbs. The exception is that my header vent is 1/4". Check your routing for losses. These will be in the form of excessive line length, too many elbows, too many junctions. You already heard about the filters. I wouldn't take such an extreme position, but I would recommend that any filter in the gravity side of the system have a negligible pressure drop. (I.e. use BIG filters. I use a huge race car filter just after my header tank.) I think the ideal fuel line is bent aluminum tube. You can use large sizes, the inside is smooth, bends are smooth, it lasts a long time, (assuming it's mounted correctly,) and it's light. It's also pretty easy to install. When my plane was built, the owner used .110" ? and heat formed it into place. He did this by installing the windshield over the skylight, then bagging the entire windshield and structure with "space blankets". He then installed a section of dryer hose and blew hot air into the dryer hose. I think he got the whole thing up to about 180F and was able to draw the forward sections into shape using gentle pressure. I'd check on the forming temperature, or else just keep heating until the windscreen gets satisfactorily soft. You have to be careful to keep the upper forward corners round and not kink the windscreen over the forward carry-through tube. You do this by "lifting" the forward edge while bending it into place. I connected a copper braided strap to the wing spar, and let the other end dangle on the cement floor, which I wetted down before all wiping and painting operations. Before I did this, I had to keep one hand on the fabric-covered part, and the other hand doing the wiping, or I'd get some serious "zaps" whenever I touched the part with my free hand. No response yet. Perhaps this question can be answered by people with either a model 1 or model 2 construction experience. If someone with either could answer with the basic details of spar construction that would be helpful. I might be able to draw some conclusions from several individual replies.
