Hello Giovanni,
As Lowell says, your static port position is what Skystar (and Denney, before)
recommended. I have mine at the same place although I read an average of 5 MPH
higher speed. My VVI is just fine and I have a problem to understand how yours
is showing all the time a descent. If I am not mistaking, the VVI is a "bleeding"
instrument, i.e. it shows a change in pressure that resets with time when
the pressure become constant. If you show a constant descent, it means that
it is constantly changing pressure ... which is impossible. So I don't think your
static port is the cause of your "constant descent" but maybe your instrument
needs calibrating.
Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

I called John to see about getting a set for my Avid...he is less than enthusiastic

I was told that the drawings for them were somewhere but he was not sure where

Mine did it too. The Eaton switch that came with my kit and that I still use can
be disassembled (careful, small parts inside) and the contacts cleaned to
fix the problem.

trim was not working. Back on the ground I verified that the trim motor would
run in the nose down direction to the limit but would not run at all in the nose
up direction. Searchng through the archives I find two likely suspects; the
trim switch or the actuator motor armature. I have 50 hours total on the plane.
My question is which is more likely to be the culprit?

Sounds like it's your switch, I would just buy a new one and move on.
As far as the ray allen, if you are using the grip with 4 buttons on top, I like
mine only for the up trim, I have it on the button to the back, I end up using
the button on the dash for the down, sure the one on the stick is hooked up,
but it takes a bit of stretching to get the thumb to the down button. This
is probably because the control stick is bent, and the normal possision of the
stick when flying is a bit forward angled. As far as durability, no problem
with mine and I have about 600 hrs on this setup. I did have problems with there
relay deck, on the second one I wrapped it in bubble wrap and then stuck it
on the back of the panel. seems to be working fine now. Of course when I do
touches I just leave the trim in one spot throughout the pattern work.

You can do that and I did. But you can also put together a magnificent
system for a fraction of the cost by using an automotive system designed
for emergency vehicles. I was able to mount mine behind the pilot seat.
May have a pic up loaded. I have lots of strobe wire a new bulbs on my
shelf collecting dust. I could do the star burst comet flash, single
flash , double, turn the one off on the wing tips, had strobes on the
top bottom and tips with stations to spare. It all up to you.

My vertical speed reads that I am descending all the time and the airspeed reads
low. I remove the static and they get better but the vertical speed is dampened
for some reason. The air speed is not far off with the cockpit pressure.
What where are most of you getting your static air?

At 08:37 PM 7/8/2007, you wrote:

Mine is in your location and my airspeed reads about 10% low. My
altimeter and encoder has been checked by the avionics shop and found
to be satisfactorily accurate so my airspeed error is in the pitot
side. (My pitot is left wing, near the strut outboard fitting, about
6" below and 10" behind the leading edge. It's been checked for leaks
so the problem is position error.)
The "damping" you see in the cockpit mode is likely a fairly well
sealed cockpit slowly bleeding air in and out. (Hard to imagine in a
IV!) Michel and Lowell have already mentioned that the VSI just needs
adjustment. I'm assuming, of course, that the VSI reads low on the
ground, as well.

Took a trip up North (Ontario Canada) with a couple of other anphib
drivers on Father's day. Had an absolute blast. The weather was
incredible..with a tailwind going up and another coming back.
One of my main gears did not lock when I arrived back at home base.
Non-issue really, as the plane tracked fine on landing and there was no
damage. If you have the Aerocet 1100 anphibs you will want to scroll to
the bottom of the page and check out the pictures and video that expose
the problem. Check your gear and you may avoid having to replace the wear
strip on the float.
If you do not have floats but you have thought about adding floats to your
plane you may want to check out the pictures and video clips for fun. Two
of the three planes have the Aerocet 1100 anphibs..the third full lotus
anphibs.

Thanks for the replies.
I believe my problem is that the static port is under a constant pressure. For
some reason it is catching air like a pitot tube. I have checked to make sure
the pitot and static are not reversed.
I will zero the VSI in level flight and see what it does then. As suggested I will
try and not concern myself with the airspeed error as it is a constant error
so all my V speeds will be based on indicated not actual. Heck I have a Garmin
296 and it gives a good VSI and ground speed indication but I just wanted
to have the VSI close.
My Static port is very thick like an Oreo cookie and I am now concerned this is
the problem. I will take a photo and post it this evening for everyones opinion.
Thanks again.

I'm on my second flat one that's been installed now over 6 years. I installed
it on a typical hot Texas summer day and used a heat gun on the two upper curves
to help relieve the stress. Very little crazing and no cracks. I'm sure it'll
be good for another few years.
IMHO installing the lexan on a cool day probably exacerbates the crazing later
on...

AS far as the new Skystar owners go, I can understand the trouble with supplying
a small part that has to be fabed for an aircraft they do not produce anymore.
It is likely not cost effective. I will just make one myself if i need to.
I guess I just need the drawings. I guess I could make more than one if needed
by other. I will not be in a hurray though as I have one on the pilot side and
fly solo most of the time.

I don=92t remember. Manufacturer of what you select will have specific
draws. More strobes more draw, not sure what your 912 system or batter
capacity is. I liked to be seen. Ran them day and night. Guess there is
always limits to ever application. I had a 50A alternator and ran big
ballast battery in the rear.
Could have run on the battery with everything on and run out of fuel
first. Good luck.

Subject: | Muffler problems |
I've just returned from a muffler shop after having the "tail pipe" on
my NSI EA81's muffler patched for the third time. The fellow at the
shop says the problem is due to the fact that the material used in
making it is too thin for the heat being generated. Obviously the only
stress on that portion of the exhaust is wind generated and what's
produced by heating and cooling. I seem to recall previous mention of a
similar or perhaps the same problem by others in this group, and was
wondering if anyone had come up with a satisfactory solution. Does
anyone know if the muffler provided with the Stratus or RAM conversion
could be used without modification?
Thanks

Subject: | Flaperon fixation rivets |
Hello Kitfoxer,
On behalf of Jean-Claude, a French Kitfox owner with limited English
knowledge, I'd like to ask a question.
He tells me that the the pop rivets fixing the link between the wing
and the flaperon are coming loose on the under side of the wing but not
on the top. He wonders if I know the reason and an eventual remedy.
Because I didn't build my Kitfox myself, I can't answer but ... I can
forward the question! :-)
He said he'll forward photos but I already ask you guys because in
three days, I'll be off on holidays, for two weeks. No, not flying,
unfortunately, but in our brand new RV we just bought. We'll visit my
old country: Belgium ... and anything else in between! :-)
Thanks in advance,

Hi Michel,
There are some differences between KitFox models in
how the flapperons were attached. What model does he
have?
Next, it is a good idea to install backing plates in
the tails of each rib that the flapperon brackets
attach to so that the rivets will not pull thru the
wood ribs. A simple piece of alum that is bent on 2
sides to fit agains the rib web and top and bottom
caps works well. Do both sides of the rib web. But
you have to glue them down well, then drill the rivet
holes slowly so as not to break one loose after
covering. That holds the rivets much better than the
wood does alone. Don't use thin alum here. Make it
strong.
One thing that can break the bottoms free first is
pulling flaps down at too high a speed, or retracting
them too late after takeoff. That is when the bending
force on the brackets is highest and it pulls the
bottoms while pushing the tops. The bottom pulling
force is the weaker link, but once loose, the tops
will follow.
Hard, large control movements at higher speeds also
put a big load on the brackets.
To repair these now is difficult without recovering.
Jean-Claude could pull both wing tips off and look at
his flapperon brackets near the tips to see what is
wrong for sure. But he needs to fix it right away, or
he could get flutter or seperation of a flapperon in
flight.
If it has only wood and the rivets are pulling thru, I
don't think installing oversized rivets will last
long. Besides there is only so much metal width to
work with, or you weakened the thin brackets.
Inspection plates installed near each bracket rib
might allow repair without recovering. Removing the
old rivets, epoxy repair the wood ribs, install
backing plates, redrilling and reinstalling the
brackets is how I would do it. If he can do this thru
inspection plates, that is good. If not, he needs to
fully repair and recover the wings.
Maybe someone else has another way or experience that
will do better?

Hi Clem!
I know us turbo Soob guys switched to new exhausts.
Not sure what the normally asperated ones did. But
you can contact RAM engines and see what a tuned
exhaust for your engine would cost.
http://ramengines.com/index.html
They seem to do pretty well for quality. You may have
to complete the exhaust from the header out of the
cowl though. Not sure what they have for it. I only
see the header in the pics.
The exhausts for the turbo Soobs has a slip joint in
the middle to deal with heat expansion. I don't know
if this exhaust fits your engine, but, made for the
turbo, it isn't tuned either. Ours were made in
Wisconsin for about $500. You might do better with
the one from RAM.

Let me clarify. It reads constant but variable decent when in flight. Not much
variation though. If I disconnect the static in flight it reads 0 and only varies

:-) Am I the only one that found that line funny? Did you mean to say that it constantly
reads a descent but the rate varies? I don't mean to be cheeky but I
have some interest in this thread as I too am trying trying to sort out some

Hi again Clem,
Retirement plans? I was suppose to plan this??? Ha
ha
Anyway I have a question for you and any other Soob
guys who may have their oil tank on the firewall.
Another Soob KF driver has this firewall oil tank with
his NSI and it blows a good bit of oil out his tank
vent line. I don't have this. Mine has the auto oil
pan instead, so I am not sure if this problem has been
resolved previously or not.
So have any of you had a lot of oil blow out of your
tank and how did you fix it?
Do your valve covers vent to the oil tank, thus
pressurizing it a bit?
Does this tank have a baffel under the vent port?
And how full is "full" for this tank? In other words,
how close is the oil level to this vent port?
Thanks,

Michel,
After reading Kurt's thoughts, I think he is spot on. On reading my manual,
there might be an issue with the aluminum rivets. If it was overstressed
and backing plates are in fact in place it might mean stretched rivets. In
that case, maybe replacing the rivets one at a time might work. I would
hesitate drilling then out all at once because if the backing plate are
loose - mine came loose while drilling unless clamped - It would be
essentially worthless as they would float out of the way and the rivets
would not catch them.

My VSI also reads a descent in flight. It is adjusted
at the upper limit to get zero on the ground, but
reads 150 ft/min descent when level in flight. Pretty
close compared to yours, but not perfect either.
In your case, I think it may be static problems if
your ASI is off too. It would also read a wrong
altitude, depending on speed, but that is harder to
confirm. If only the VSI is off, it is probably the
gauge. A static fault anywhere in the system should
throw off all gauges that use it.
The static checks performed by inspectors on your
gauges do not account for position error, only gauge
and line quality. Only blowing air over the port will
check for position error.
You might try tapping a small air damn just in front
of your static port. Something 1/4 inch high and an
inch across about 1/2 inch in front of your port.
This will create a boundry layer over the port and
might make a difference. If it does, you can try
different sizes of little damn until you get one just
big enough to give you accuracy over your speed range.
Then perminately install it.
Smallest change you can make, if it is positon error.
I have seen this on several production planes to
correct their system.

Subject: RE: Kitfox-List: NSI normal asperated oil blowoff
Hi Kurt:
I drive a NSI normally asperated Subaru with the oil tank mounted on the
firewall.
My first question is:"What do you mean by a lot of oil blows out of his vent
line"
The vent line is the crank case vent. It vents moisture, oil vapors (which
condense as they cool) and a soap like residue, all of which makes quite a
mess on the belly of the airplane, depending where and how far back the vent
line has been routed. I installed a moisture separator between the oil tank
and the vent line ( I had attached a photo but it was rejected by Matronics.
If you want a copy of that picture, send me your e-mail address). That solved
99% of the dirty belly problem.
My valve covers are not vented.
The oil tank does have a baffle under the vent port.
The cap of the oil tank has an aluminum dip stick hanging from the underside
of the cap. The bottom of this dip stick is the minimum oil level, and a
hole drilled about 1-1/2" up from the bottom (my guess from memory) is the
max oil level. If you put in more oil than that it'll blow out.
If you need more info give me a call.

Hi again Clem,
Retirement plans? I was suppose to plan this??? Ha ha
Anyway I have a question for you and any other Soob guys who may have their
oil tank on the firewall.
Another Soob KF driver has this firewall oil tank with his NSI and it blows
a good bit of oil out his tank vent line. I don't have this. Mine has the
auto oil pan instead, so I am not sure if this problem has been resolved
previously or not.
So have any of you had a lot of oil blow out of your tank and how did you
fix it?
Do your valve covers vent to the oil tank, thus pressurizing it a bit?
Does this tank have a baffel under the vent port?
And how full is "full" for this tank? In other words, how close is the oil
level to this vent port?
Thanks,
Kurt Schrader

List
I replied to Noel off list regarding my reason for adjusting the centering
screw in flight but recent posts suggest a list wide response is
appropriate. I just checked my VSI and it shows a 50 ft per minute descent
sitting in the hanger - thank goodness for concrete floors.
Since I rarely sit in the airplane on the ground looking at needles - engine
instruments excepted, I have found it more useful to have the VSI more
accurate while flying so adjusting it to zero in that invironment works best
for me. It's not really easy to do, but after a tweak or two it satisfies.
I do carry one of the small jewelers screwdrivers in one of the pencil clips
of my kneeboard.

I get the normal amount of vent mist -- just enough to dirty up the
belly, about the same as an 0200 would do. No actual loss of oil level.

Yes, but only once back in the first few hours when I'd filled it
too full. Made a big mess. I think it's only designed to handle about 3
quarts with the rest in the engine and oil filter.

No.

Yes and it works well, but not when you have too much oil in it.
Lots of engines will blow oil out the vent when too full.

Dunno. I just go by the manual and at oil change I add 3.5 quarts
oil to the tank. No problems.
Also, with about 350 hours on the muffler, no problems, no cracks --
yet. I was always under the impression that it was a pretty heavy duty
unit. One thing I did was to open up a small smiley face in the front of
the cowl that helps to cool the muffler. That might be why I'm not having
any problem. Heat is your worst enemy.
Glad to help.

Kurt:
I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can. There are no vents on
the valve covers, so I assume they must vent to the firewall tank.
Regarding a baffel under the vent port, I really don't know. The oil level
when full is 2 to 3 inches below the top of the tank in the tail down
position. My experience is that as long as the oil is kept at the proper
level there's not much blow-off out the vent line. If you add a little too
much oil, however, (which for some unknown reason I seemed to do when I
first got the plane) there's a considerable amount of blow-off. Perhaps you
remember that on my plane the vent line goes to a half-quart beer can with a
plastic bottle and foam rubber in it. (How's that for high tech?) There
were a couple of times early on when it filled to the point that I was
getting oil mist back on the windscreen. Needless to say, a tense moment or
two. When I checked the can, it was pretty full of oil, not 16 ounces, mind
you because of the foam rubber in the bottle, but enough to get some
misting, nevertheless. Thinking back about it while writing this message,
it seems that NSI said to keep the oil level within so many inches of the
bottom of the cap, and that was what I was doing. When I changed the oil
and filter and added the proper amount of oil my level was a little lower
than their recommendation. I made a mark on the dip-stick, and have never
filled the tank above that level. I've not checked my beer can reservoir
lately, but have several hours on the last oil change, and the level in the
tank is within no more than a quarter of an inch from my mark which I assume
is due to burning rather than blow-off. At least I've not had any oil mist
on the windscreen. I have to do an annual condition inspection this month,
and will check the level in the can at that time.

After four years of off again, on again flying lessons, three address changes,
three kinds of airplanes and four instructors, I finally passed my check ride
last weak! It was not without some drama however as when it came time for the
flying part of the test my Kitfox refused to start. The examiner offered that
I could complete the examination using one of the rentals they had available.
I elected take him up on the offer and completed my check ride in a Cessna 152
despite the fact that it had been almost two years since I had flown a Cessna
and even then it was a 172. No doubt the examiner afforded me a little more latitude
then usual as he passed me despite some difficulty in holding a stable
altitude during maneuvers and a less than stellar demonstration of a short field
landing.
I returned to my Kitfox after the check ride hoping that I would not have to find
alternate transportation to my home airport which was 150 driving miles away.
To start my kitfox I normally resort to a technique that I read about on this
list whereby the engine is first cranked for 10 sec with the mags off to prime
the carbs. I then start as normal with one full turn past idle of the vernier
throttle. I gather that my motor is more stubborn than most as it usually
takes a bit of cranking even at this point. On this occasion however, the motor
showed no signs of life at all even though I persisted in cranking until the
battery began to show signs of wearing down. Wondering if had somehow flooded
the cylinders with fuel, I removed one of the lower spark plugs but found it
completely dry.
At this point, one of the attendants from the local FBO offered me a jump start
from some battery powered utility cart. I fear that the experience will likely
have shortened the life of my starter by at least half as the procedure provided
enough power to the starter to crank the motor to 400 RPM for several seconds
before it finally started.
She seemed to be running smoothly at that point so I elected to fly her home with
a close eye on all the gauges and plenty of altitude. On the following day,
she started and ran normally. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I'll add that she's always run a bit rough between 2000 and 2500 RPM when
cold though I have no idea if this is related.

I did a little flying this afternoon. Flew with static to ASI only and it was within
3-5 mph of the gps. I have a EIS with alt. an vsi. I rigged a connection
of its electronic sensor to the static and it worked properly. I then connected
the mechanical vsi (MVSI)and the EIS. The EIS seemed correct when compared
to the GPS but the MVSI was way off as usual. I tried adjusting the MVSI and it
seemed to improve. When I pulled the power to land after adjusting it, it went
crazy. I think I will locate a known good MVSI and see what it says.

Sounds a bit like a vapour lock even though that usually only happens to an
over heated engine.
How was the power once you got it started? Did you check the fuel pumps?
Are there impulse lines on the 912???
I think I would try installing a proper carb primer that pumps a squirt of
gas right down the throat of the carb for starting and give up on the cold
cranking.

Do you use the choke for starting? If not start using them. If I do not use them
it is near impossible to get my UL started. When I use them It only turns over
2-3 revs before starting.

I don't know what an 'impulse line' is but I've considered installing a primer.
Maybe it's time I do that.

Holy cow! Two revs? There must be something wrong with my setup then. I use the
choke but it doesn't seem to help. There's a shop about 50 miles north west
of me that specializes in Rotax. I guess it's time to take it in and have it inspected
throughly.

Your carbs may be gummed up so that the choke is not working. Also you could need
new spark plugs.

Just got a Kitfox IV Speedster still in the building stages and will
be ready for a powerplant in the near future. Originally purchased with
the intent of a Rotax from the previous builder, however I find myself
leaning towards the VW engine. I've heard there are a couple Kitfox
IV's flying with the VW and I would like very much to get some ideas and
rough price costs to power a IV. Anyone out there that has a VW IV that
I can exchange ideas with? Thanks PMorel

Subject: | VW Kitfox Flyers/Rons update |
Hi paul I have a Kitfox IV Speedster with a 1915cc vw I'll send pics and
info direct if you have questions. Since I have not posted to the group in
a while I'll give a brief update on my vw experiance.
With over 60 hours of trouble free flying it was getting weak. This
turned out to be valve adjustment that I had hoped to go 100 hours between
adjustments. Turns out the advice is right that you should adjust at 25
hours. I also found that with the Valley Engineering redrive it is VERY
easy to set the timing to far advanced. This leads to overheating as well
as hard starting. All in all I am happy again as I am back to flying on
~3gph of 87 octane= $9.00/hour. 2.5 hours this weekend. This winter I will
build a 2275cc VW to replace the 1915cc as it is a little lazy with two
people.

You mentioned in your earlier post:
"I then start as normal with one full turn past idle of the vernier throttle."
My understanding of the 912 carb is that it requires the throttle to
be AT IDLE for the choke to work. I noted this because it is similar
to the 582, which I run. Try starting with the throttle at idle and
using the choke. (Jump in here any time, Lowell.)

Congratulations Luis! Well done! (Can't help you with the no-start, however.)

I had to go back to my books to confirm how a VSI works, but if I'm
not mistaken you could get this error if you had a leak in the case.
This would allow the low pressure cockpit air to lower the case
pressure constantly, relative to the static port, causing the
appearance of a descent. It's not entirely unlikely; I had a leak in
my altimeter case that took me days to find. I finally found it by
applying a very slight vacuum using a small hand vacuum source, (used
to bleed brakes.) The vacuum would decay over time, indicating a
leak. I then applied the vacuum and ran a bead of thin cyanoacrylate,
(super glue,) where the bezel met the glass. The cyanoacrylate was
ingested into the leak and sealed it.
