Not sure of the NSI design but EA81's suck in on the right side rocker cover and
blow out on the left. I have an oil seperator in the left side and both crack
case vents out the bottom of the cowl. No messy sreak and I empty the seperator
about once every 3-4 hrs. Clean and positive. John A. Serie 5 EA81T Intercooled.

I posted the same question a few months ago. Some one sugested the keywest reggulator.
It provides a more constant voltage on my aircraft. I also think it reduced
my radio noise. But mine is on the inside of the firewall. I don't know
how the heat will affect it.

The Keywest is probaly the best regulator available. I replaced the original Rotax
one with a Keywest and it provided steady even voltage both were mounted
on the engine side of the firewall didn't notice any noise reduction in the radio.

The Key West solid-state regulator available from LEAF and many other sources (John

few years ago with the KW and it has operated flawlessly. There's a good Mike
Strattman article on California Power System's website that describes all the
alternatives and how they work.

All,
It looks like my Rotax 582 three phase voltage regulator's
dying. (It will occasionally go over voltage. I can re-set it and get
it to work, but it's happening more often now.)
Does anyone have a recommended replacement? I've mounted it
in the engine compartment to minimize electrical noise in the cockpit
and I suspect things are a little hot for the stock Rotax unit. Has
anyone tried any of the Harley replacements? Any after-market units?
Or should I just increase the cooling to the Rotax unit?
Thanks,

If this is a problem that has been coming on slowly then I expect there
is a
problem with a ground in your system somewhere. First step is to make
sure
all the ground connections between the voltage regulator, battery and
engine
to the frame of the plane are nice and shiny clean. These solid state
units
(regardless of brand name) are designed to operate many years without
attention. When they quit they normally don't come back.
There is an operating envelope for these regulators in terms of
operating
temperature and your problems may be temperature related. you can try
mounting a piece of 1" scat hose inside the cowl to direct air from the
front of the cowl to the regulator.
I have had serious EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) in the past with
my
582. The cause was in the spark plugs. The 582 requires resistor plugs
AND
resistor caps. because of an engine problem all my plugs shorted the
resistor in the plugs I could hear the tower but the tower couldn't copy
me
at all even though my signal was strength 5. I was operating on
batteries.

Hi Michel,
What an interesting journey, -and write up..
This is the first time I've ever seen a stand-by compass mounted outside
cockpit and right on top of the engine cowl. Am I right??
Thanks for sharing this with us.

It flew. My instructor took it to the air for a 20min flight today, and
he was thrilled. Flew hands off with just a little bit pitch trim, and
he was very pleased with the handling . He was reporting 100mph cruise
with only 2600rpm of the Jabiru 2200 engine.? (think I have to check my
ASI). The weather was not that good for a test flight, it was 10knot
and some rain, hopefully the weather is better in a few days, Will come
back with more numbers later.

Hello to all, I'm Alberto from Italy.
I'd like to know the thicikness of the plywood used for the ribs.
What are the procedures to glue them to the aluminum spars?
Thanks!

Congratulations, Geir! I am sure you'll have a lot of pleasure with
your Kitfox - Jabiru combination. I also fly at 2600 RPM on cruise but
it is more like 90 MPH. Your ASI might be slightly wrong. Going from
the Rotax 582 to the Jabiru, I noticed that the air vent under the
cowling, ahead of the firewall was creating a slight low pressure in
the cockpit and I had to put my ASI to a static port, aft on the
fuselage. Maybe you could check that. Another thing is that maybe your
prop has a coarser pitch than mine. What is you static WOT RPM on the
ground? Anyway, with my model 3, 100 MPH is the Vne so I am very happy
cruising at 90 MPH.

By the way, if you take a look on this address, here is some nice
pictures taken of one of the other guys in the club. www.mikrofly.net
The static rpm is 2950 (it is not the best choice propeller on this
engine/airframe) but I will test if for a while.
Hope to see you and your Kitfox one day Michel.

Thanks guys
I have serial # C9604-0154, can anyone tell me what this means. Also can anyone
tell me what I can do to the airframe to take advantage of the series 5 wing
strength/capacity. I am pre-cover and have a great source for any welding mods
that I could benefit from.
Thanks
