Well, the Kitfox List comes through again ! A month ago I asked if anyone had some fairly obscure droop tips for somewhat dated Mod III or IV, to sell. Thanks to the generosity of Clem Wehner, I'm now holding a beautiful, free ! pair in my lap. And if Clem builds anything like he packages parts up for shipping - well, his machine must be a beauty. Strong, durable & a work of art, to boot. Jim McManus Whitehorse, Yukon

There's another thing I thought of. Since everyone builds their KF differently, it occurred to me that perhaps your vent hose is terminating in a low pressure area and the oil is being "sucked" out? Something to look at. As for lowering the tank, I'd give that considerable thought because during the development process the position of the tank was thought out and placed in the optimum position through trial and error. Lowering it may possibly cause other problems. Have a real good look inside that tank to see if anything has bee modified from original. If it has, you should be able to see it. Mark Twain From: debrun26@juno.com Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Subaru oil loss Thanks Deke~ I'll give it a try... Replace oil, remove tank and insect, etc.... I'm going right now to make a seperator to take care of the messy problem under the plane. I'm thinking of removing the remote tank and mounting it lower so I can then put a verticle extention on the breather. what do you think? Layne

Do you have any idea what the part number was? For all you folks who are fairly new to this list (last couple years) there's a lot of good information in the Sportflight web site hosted by Don Pearsall. That is in the on position. If you look over to the right , hard to se, is the off words and an arrow pointing to off. Also note the aluminum fuel line visible through the flaperon control slot. Goes straight back from the fuel valve and the angles over to the side for clearance. So no 90s. I have a Standard Airpath Pedestal Mount compass mounted in the center front edge of my Model 5 dash and it is nonfunctional due to a magnetic field interference. It works fine when away from that position. This is the second one I have had since the one in the plane when I got it was the same way and I thought it was defective. We went to a fly in this past saturday and I talked with 2 people who have the same problem in a Model 4 and 5. One used a pedestal compass and the other had a Vertical Card Compass. Anyway -- Has anyone found a way to damppen or get rid of thes magnetic interference ? Thanks

I had the same problem and it was caused by residual welding fields in the tube frame, particularly the two upper panel mount tubes. I originally had to rent the big degausser from Sacramento Sky Ranch and degauss the entire area. I was able to eliminate enough interference to correct the remainder with the compass correctors. Sometime later I accidently did a bit of welding, shorting the battery, which renewed the interference. This I was able to eliminate using a little hand degausser I bought off the web. (Apparently this second time I only magnetized the surface of the tubes. When I tried the hand degausser before it hadn't helped at all.) There's a little round, fairly inexpensive, gauss meter you can buy to check the magnetization of your structure. I recommend it. The only problem with the big degausser is that you need to keep your avionics/electronics at least 12" away from it when it's running. Otherwise you'll modify them. For more info see: http://www.sacskyranch.com/degaussi.htm Guy Buchanan San Diego, CA K-IV 1200 / 582-C / Warp / 100% done, thanks mostly to Bob Ducar.

Seriously. I tried verticals, ball, correction balls, remote mount magnets. The only thing accurate and consistent was the GPS. I know the system can go down, but I figured it had more pluses than minuses. I kept the wet compass just for looks. I mounted my vertical compass in front of and in the middle of my dash. It has been working great since '97,and I never had to touch my adjustment screws. It should be at least 4" away from radio and steel tubing. I checked for magnetic interference with a gauss meter and found this place free of any interference. I am with you Rick. I carry a small cheap handheld GPS for back up and try to keep reading sectionals in case the whole GPS satellite network goes down. I tried verticals, ball, correction balls, remote mount magnets. The only thing accurate and consistent was the GPS. I know the system can go down, but I figured it had more pluses than minuses. I kept the wet compass just for looks. Subject: Re: Subaru oil loss
Thanks again Deke~ I went to the plane last night to try to start worki ng on lowering the tank, making a seperator, and changing out the pvc va lve. Found the tank couldn't be lowered w/o welding new connect points on it... so I don't need to worry about residual ramifications. Still t rying to figure out the seperator proect. I hand cranked the prop to se e if the cilinders stoll had close to the same pressure and found that 2 of them were significantly weaker than the others. This is a new devel opement and may explain the recent dramatic increase in oil loss through the breather. Now i need to figure out if it's due to cillinders or va lves. That's a lot for a black thumb non-mechanic. I've found an auto sooby mechanic that will work on it just in case. I hope it will be OK for him to do the work instead of an A/P mechanic. Haven't found one of them that know a thing about Subaru engines. My breather line extends below the fusalage a good 10 inches, so I wouldn't think that would be a low pressure area.
