First, you can not use an aircraft differential compression tester on
the NSI engine because of the freewheeling clutch. So, at any auto
parts store you can buy an inexpensive compression tester that screws
into a spark plug hole. About $30 will get a decent one. Just remove
all of your spark plugs and screw the tester into a spark plug hole.
Make a drawing of the layout so you can keep track of the readings of
each cylinder. With the ignition "off" and throttle all the way to the
firewall, to get the highest reading crank the engine over for about 20
seconds while watching the gauge then write it down on your diagram.
Continue this for the other three then get back to us with your
readings. There is a way you can differentiate between the valves and
rings, but I don't have time to go into that yet. This is all pretty
basic stuff so any of your friends who have mechanical knowledge should
be able to help you with the check. WATCH OUT FOR THAT PROP.
Also, if you find that pcv valve you spoke of, let me know where it is
so I can take a look at mine. :-) Just kidding. There is no pcv valve
on your engine, or shouldn't be anyway.
Also, that breather line extending below the fuselage may be putting it
in a low pressure area. I would cut it off so that it is up inside the
cowling, but below the engine line.
I assume you bought this engine "used"?
Others who can add insight to this, feel free to jump in.

Thanks again Deke~ I went to the plane last night to try to start
working on lowering the tank, making a seperator, and changing out the
pvc valve. Found the tank couldn't be lowered w/o welding new connect
points on it... so I don't need to worry about residual ramifications.
Still trying to figure out the seperator proect. I hand cranked the
prop to see if the cilinders stoll had close to the same pressure and
found that 2 of them were significantly weaker than the others. This is
a new developement and may explain the recent dramatic increase in oil
loss through the breather. Now i need to figure out if it's due to
cillinders or valves. That's a lot for a black thumb non-mechanic.
I've found an auto sooby mechanic that will work on it just in case. I
hope it will be OK for him to do the work instead of an A/P mechanic.
Haven't found one of them that know a thing about Subaru engines. My
breather line extends below the fusalage a good 10 inches, so I wouldn't
think that would be a low pressure area. Layne

MessageThis appears to be an older version that what Andair illustrates
on their web site, but obviously it is what I'm looking for. On their
web site, the best I can see is that when in the on position, the handle
points perpendicular to the flow which is not what I want. While at
Oshkosh, they said they didn't produce one where the indicator point
faced the direction of flow on the straight through model. When I told
him that I thought it was standard for the handle to follow the
direction of flow he acted like he didn't know what to say. So, I said
"thanks" and moved on.
C'mon guys, what are you using out there? What is being supplied with
the kits now, or is it something that has to be procured on your own?

That is in the on position. If you look over to the right , hard to
se, is the off words and an arrow pointing to off. Also note the
aluminum fuel line visible through the flaperon control slot. Goes
straight back from the fuel valve and the angles over to the side for
clearance. So no 90s.

For all you folks who are fairly new to this list (last couple

Look at the photo section. You may be able to tell the model.
I don't remember, it has been a while. I know it was in line no 90s
to plumb , just some adaptors and different length tube. Not sure of the
valve orientation but it had a nice detent lock for open and closed.

Gentlemen:
Please don't write off the magnetic compass problem too easily, by replacing
it with a GPS. The Magnetic Compass is a REQUIRED instrument in every
airplane together with a properly filled out compass calibration card. I
admit it is not the easiest thing to do; however it is not impossible. I
have a full stack of radios and yet my S.I.R.S.
Navigator (ASS), monted in the center top of my dash is calibrated within
2-3 degrees all the way around, using a set of calibrating balls. I
understand that a couple of small pieces of magnetic refrigerator gasket,
placed strategically around the compass, work just as well. Obviously it is
a very tedious and time consuming job (couple of days), but believe me, it
can be done.

I had problems with mine and the steps I took to correct were to: take any filters
out of the system from tank to header. Remove the hose coming from the tanks
and blow air in reverse to clear the screen in the tank. Replace the gaskets
on the caps with the ones for the mercedees. Mine work great now.

Subject: | Magnetic Compass |
I'm in 100% agreement with you Peter. Although he only time it should
take
more than an hour or two to swing a compass is if you have Electro
Magnetic
Interference (EMI) or for some reason can't use a compass rose. For the
grass field guys you can lay out a compass rose using nails in the turf
with
a bit of fluorescent tope tied to the ends. I think you can easily go
over
board with compass swings as there are a lot of factors which contribute
to
good readings. Parallax and where the centre of the plane is are just
two
that come to mind.
I have a little problem with my plane. It is on floats and that adds to
the
complexity of turning the plane to the correct headings with the engine
running. I could do a swing while it is on the trailer but that will
introduce a slight error. It was suggested to me that I set my GPS to
read
magnetic and on a calm day use it to get my headings and set the compass
with the aeroplane underway. We have plenty of water around here and
where
ever you have plenty of water you will also have plenty of boats and
other
things you really wouldn't want to hit because you were fiddling with a
compass. My only answer is someday to get someone who is qualified to
slow
taxi the plane ( that should take 5 min) to steer/drive the headings
while I
adjust the compass.
It is out a couple of degrees right now but as long as I know which
quadrant
North is I'll be OK. One of the advantages of living on an island.

did you try moving the compass to another location? Possibly above the

but it should be more or less free to work properly in that location.

There are certainly several possibilities: 1) It's stuck. 2) It's
broken. 3) The fuel level's low. Don't discount this last. My header
tank will run the top 1/2" dry upon re-fill until the turbulence
works all the air out. I find it's also easy to get sealant on it
during installation. Finally, if it's a float sensor, and the sensor
falls off, (breaks,) the light will illuminate. Unfortunately you'll
have to pull it and take a look.\

It all depends on how the switch is wired. A lot are wired hot (B+) to
the
light and then the switch in the header tank only provides a ground when
the
fuel goes low. If this is how your light is wired then you probably
have a
short circuit (to ground) somewhere between the light itself and the
switch.
Favoured places are in block connectors where a wire can come part way
out
and short off either the frame of neighbouring wires.

I'm using three "Brass mini ball valves" (as described in my Grainger
Catalog)...one for each tank, and one for the main fuel line. I first
saw these on Bill Willyard's Rotax-powered 'fox, and "stole" the
idea. When the handle is in line with the flow, the valve is open. I
used the 1/4" size. The cost is less than $5 each.

Sorry Deke. I've been using the old Imperial 104-HD for the last year without problems.
Don't know why. Maybe it's because I use 100LL.

Subject: | Installing Full lotus Floats on the KF |
Well after I flew my brothers kitfox on the Northaire fiberglass clones it was
decided that they has scaled them down too much and they were not of sufficient
displacement to fly safely.... this was determined both scientificaly through
3D modeling and number crunching and by the good ole load her up and see what
she does method.. We topped off the tanks and both got in, I powered up and
as the tail of the floats left the beach the right float promptly sank. This
is not a good feeling but luckily the lake was still real shallow and we did
a real quick 180 to the right and pulled back to shore.. I kicked him out as it
was just too nice of a day to not fly. I got in another 7.5 hrs of flight time
that day while he stayed behind (twice as I had to come back and re-fuel)
and mowed the area around the float plane parking.
The next day I pulled the plane out of the water and yanked his floats off and
rigged my set of full lotus 1260's to his plane. The original skystar mounts
were 10" to far back on the floats and the rear mount was 1" to long. I moved
the mounts forward but did not shorten the rear leg till after my first test
flight. I have now flown it at gross and I think I can move the floats back another
3"-4" and I wont have to force the nose over at gross. If anyone is having
trouble getting on step at gross weight, then the cure is to move the step
further back. Full Lotus recomends the step be 4-8" behind the CG. I put the
step 2" behind the aft CG location and I think the factory knows best.. I will
move them back one mounting hole and drill yet another set of front holes.
I hate putting all the holes in the tubes, but once I find what works best,
I can get new aluminum tubes and drill those once.
As far as flying..solo and full fuel she is almost instantly on step and pops off
the water in 5-6 seconds at 35-40 and climbs out quite nice 700-800 fpm. Full
fuel and dual (at ahemmmm... gross) it takes about a 12-15 seconds. She plows
a bit and you have to force the nose over with full down, but once on top
of the water at about 15 mph she accelerates very quick to 40. you can either
them pop the flaperons on to break water or roll one float out then lift off.
I perfer to roll a float so I can keep a hand on the throttle just for grins
and giggles.
The cruise speed went up 4-5 MPH with the full lotus over the northaire floats
and the climb out is about 250 fpm better. For the places I go, you just can't
beat the full lotus floats. I landed in a popular place for the Beaver and
Otter drivers and chatted with a Otter driver buddy who was there waiting on the
clients to get their limit of fish. He had heard me talking about all the
things I can do witht the full lotus floats so he asked for a demonstration.
I ran around on the grass and tundra and then took off from the grass. Another
pilot flew over and asked him how long it took the guy that landed long to get
unstuck.. he replied that the tracks were not from someone who landed long
and Missed the lake, but were done on purpose to demonstrate the floats.. the
other pilot was blown away that a guy on floats would intentionaly go out in the
grass. My brother also learned float flying 101 that day.. cell phone goes
in a zippered pocket or the fishes will be taking all your calls from now on..
Attached are a few pics of a flight around Cook Inlet and Tuxidney Bay as well
as one of us tied up at John Stoners dock. As you can see he has the original
skystar rigging and placement. We are trying to talk him into moving the floats
so he can get off the water at gross weight.

I have used a hand held AC mag yoke for doing several airframes. I just go over
the tubes with the gauss meter to determine the areas with a magnetic field,
then de-magnitize the area. To de-mag the area, you start out with the mag yoke
on the tube powered up, and leaving the power on you slowly pull the yoke
off the tubes with a twisting motion and leave the power on till you are a good
12" away from the tubes. I have never spend more than an hour on an airframe
to de-mag the cockpit area. You can order a cheap gauss meter from harbor freight
or many other online stores. A quick google search should have one at
your door in no time.
As was mentioned above, pull your radios and compass out before you start playing
with the mag yoke.
I am at work for 2 weeks, but would be more than happy to send you my mag yoke
and gauss meter if you cant find one localy when I get back home.

Subject: | Re: Broken Kitfoxes everywhere at OSH! |
I just got back to dealing with my email, and the 200+ messages. Is
there another Lynn with a "broken" Kitfox? Who is Lynn Farnsworth? Is
he the yellow 'fox with the broken prop? Good to see that he got it
going again. I'm still downloading the video called "Emergency
Aircraft Repair" and it's taking FOREVER on this dial-up line.
If you're referring to me, Guy, I had the battery die on my plane
while lining up for the "Homebuilder's Review". I had them tow it
over to Emergency Aircraft Repair so I could charge the battery. It
started just fine later that evening.
What happened was that during the looooooooong taxi down to the
threshold of 36, I had to taxi slowly behind other planes, and my
engine loaded up, and I couldn't very well clean it out without
revving it up and taking a chance on gobbling up somebody's rudder in
front of me. Then when I went to shut it down, I usually shut off the
main fuel valve and let the engine run for a few minutes to lower the
amount of fuel in the bowl. Then during a restart, the engine will
start immediately. If I miss doing this (and I did), I have to treat
it like a flooded car engine, and hold full open throttle 'til it
starts...about 10-15 seconds. When it didn't start right away, I went
to "choke mode" and this only worsened the problem, then the battery
began to get low, and finally gave up the ghost. I had left the
master on the night before, charging my cell phone, and this took a
little bit out of the battery, but it started fine just before
heading for the Homebuilder's Review. It was just all that taxiing,
loading up of the engine, and neglecting my normal shutdown/starting
procedures that caused that embarrassing scene in front of the
"amassed thousands" who had all come to see the #3 fly....yeah,
RIGHT!! : )

A long time ago I found directions on the list to build my own degausser. It wasn't
hard and worked pretty good. I mounted a rheostat on a board with a large
light bulb. From that I ran a long wire that I could wrap around the part
with a magnetic field. Run the rheostat down to zero, the light bulb goes out
and the magnetic field is gone.
I'll attach a photo. It's a little dark but the wire is wrapped around the axle.
I did this because I found that after cutting my axle in half, there was a large
enough magnetic field that I could pick up one half of the axle with the other.
I used this method to remove the field from these parts and form all of the
tubing around the cabin.
Hope this helps,

Hi George,
Check the archives, this has been covered before. I had the same problem and it
was caused by residual welding fields in the tube frame, particularly the two
upper panel mount tubes. I originally had to rent the big degausser from Sacramento
Sky Ranch and degauss the entire area. I was able to eliminate enough interference
to correct the remainder with the compass correctors. Sometime later
I accidently did a bit of welding, shorting the battery, which renewed the
interference. This I was able to eliminate using a little hand degausser I bought
off the web. (Apparently this second time I only magnetized the surface of
the tubes. When I tried the hand degausser before it hadn't helped at all.) There's
a little round, fairly inexpensive, gauss meter you can buy to check the
magnetization of your structure. I recommend it. The only problem with the
big degausser is that you need to keep your avionics/electronics at least 12"
away from it when it's running. Otherwise you'll modi

That's interesting, Lynn. I also need a few seconds on the starter if I
stop my Jabiru then start it again say, ten minutes later. I thought it
was the opposite happening; the heat of the engine evaporates the fuel
in the carburettor. But your experience is that it is flooding.
I think I will try your method the next time I know I have to start
again a warm engine.

Thanks for the response Guy. Mine was OK for the first year or so also, but
it slowly began to get difficult to turn. Removing it, cleaning and lubing
would solve the problem, but only temporary and now it only works for a few
months. I don't think these valves were designed for gasoline. Probably
fuel oil or something like that.

Guys,
I needed to replace the orings on my starter for the 582 and a call to CPS gave
me a bit of a jolt.. I was quoted $68.60 for the orings.. As they are metric,
I could not find any localy. I did a bit of searching around and found a manufacture
that would sell direct to me if I ordered in quantity. The end result
if I break it down is $3.00 for the orings needed per installation plus about
4.55 shipping if you want them priority mail or the cost of a stamp to just
drop them to you in an envelope. If anyone needs the orings replaced and does
not want to pay the cost of two fill ups to do it, drop me a note as I have
lots of them on the way. These are Buna-n orings and are the exact size that
rotax calls for.

Hi Leonard,
I loved your pictures. I'll get mine on the water someday.
Regarding your O-rings, did you try McMaster? (www.mcmaster.com) You
have to buy a box of 100, but that's only about $10, (plus shipping,)
less than the two fill-ups you intimated.

a 2 stroke engine will "4 cycle" if the mixture is way rich! that is the only
way a 2 stroke will "4 cycle".
Having too much pitch will also put a heavy load on your engine and will indeed
cause it to run hotter. nIf you are using the stock RPM gauge they are known
to be out of calibration something fierce. Most seem to like the tiny tach and
it seems to hold calibration just fine and matches very close to the optical
tach.
Is there anyone around your area that is familiar with 2 strokes that can help
tune it?

Looks like a great setup. I researched the archives but couldn't
find anything on construction or use so I have a few questions. How
long do you keep the current flowing at high power before you slowly
reduce to nothing? Do you think this unit can be used on the instrument
panel support tubes with instruments in the panel (ammeter, voltmeter,
tach, egt etc.) without damaging them?

A long time ago I found directions on the list to build my own
degausser. It wasn't hard and worked pretty good. I mounted a rheostat
on a board with a large light bulb. From that I ran a long wire that I
could wrap around the part with a magnetic field. Run the rheostat down
to zero, the light bulb goes out and the magnetic field is gone.
I'll attach a photo. It's a little dark but the wire is wrapped
around the axle.
I did this because I found that after cutting my axle in half, there
was a large enough magnetic field that I could pick up one half of the
axle with the other. I used this method to remove the field from these
parts and form all of the tubing around the cabin.
Hope this helps,

Hi George,
Check the archives, this has been covered before. I had the same
problem and it was caused by residual welding fields in the tube frame,
particularly the two upper panel mount tubes. I originally had to rent
the big degausser from Sacramento Sky Ranch and degauss the entire area.
I was able to eliminate enough interference to correct the remainder
with the compass correctors. Sometime later I accidently did a bit of
welding, shorting the battery, which renewed the interference. This I
was able to eliminate using a little hand degausser I bought off the
web. (Apparently this second time I only magnetized the surface of the
tubes. When I tried the hand degausser before it hadn't helped at all.)
There's a little round, fairly inexpensive, gauss meter you can buy to
check the magnetization of your structure. I recommend it. The only
problem with the big degausser is that you need to keep your
avionics/electronics at least 12" away from it when it's running.
Otherwise you 'll mo dify them.

Subject: | Re: 582 engine adjustments |
Good stuff. I will consider running it without the prop to adjust the air screw
by ear without getting sliced and diced. This guy who has looked at it once claims
to be experienced with two cycles. He is an aircfraft owner and pilot but
his experience has been on motorcycles and such. We ran the engine after moving
the needle valve from the third notch to the second. After running the engine
like that and looking at the spark plugs, he felt it was running too hot,
and we put it back to the third notch. I flew it today after setting the pitch
for 6200RPM static. I saw about 1050 on the EGT, which I hear is about right.
I would say it ran cooler with the lower pitch, but the OAT was much cooler,
and I still saw 180 deg F a time or two. The cloud above me sprinkled a bit on
my windshield. Naturally I thought I had sprung a leak and high-tailed it home.
It is still four cycling at the lower RPMs. We had messed with the air screw
before, but after reading those aforementioned web pages, I reset them to one
turn out. I think it is worse now. Are they still affecting the mixture in the
4000-5000 RPM range? I have to get above 5000 to guarantee no skipping. Thanks
for your insights. I attached a picture for grins.

It was just all that taxiing,
loading up of the engine, and neglecting my normal shutdown/starting
procedures that caused that embarrassing scene in front of the
"amassed thousands" who had all come to see the #3 fly....yeah,
RIGHT!! : )

I have the same arrangement and cope just fine (although I must admit that my plane
doesn't draw that much attention). My neighbors (and their kids) all know
what I am building and they pretty much take it in stride. One neighbor thought
I was building a helicopter (only saw the fuelage).
I enjoy the opportunity to show them that there are still people out there that
dream about flying and are actually doing something about it (not just dreaming
about it). I have only had one stranger stop and ask questions, and once I
let a neighbor kid sit in the seat and play with the controls (stress testing,
hehe).
I guess it all depends on your personality, temperment and outlook on the building
process. Maybe you could throw a tarp over it when you have to roll it out
of the garage???

Hey there Fellow Foxers,
I think Kent's right. It's all how you look at it. I always enjoyed the
visits by curious neighbors and their friends. My UPS driver stopped one
day and asked what all these deliveries were for. When I told him I was
building an airplane, he asked to come see it. From then on, he would a
sk about it with each stop and often take a new look. Eventually, he sta
rted stopping even without parts to deliver! One day, I rented a Cheroke
e and took him, his wife and son for a ride. He was hooked. Lessons star
ted within a couple weeks and he's now a pilot! After awhile, he left hi
s job at UPS to start his own very successful landscaping business. Unfo
rtunately, he very seldom has time to fly. He's built a house an hour no
rth of here and never ended up flying in the Kitfox, yet!
I got off the subject there, but my message is that you can either look
at visitors as a distraction, or as an opportunity for sharing the love
of aviation. Like most things in life, it's not the things that happen i
n your life that determine your happiness, but rather your outlook and a
ttitude toward those happenings.

great looking bird! The midrange is what seems to be off. What jets are you running?
and when you look at the jet chart, are you looking at the one with our
without the air intake silencer. I have seen this happen...and the wrong jets
were installed. Of course, since this is a midrange problem, you could go
for the in-flight mixture adjustment and your problem should dissapear, as well
as being able to richen up a tad on decent to keep the EGT's under control.
Did you verify the idle RPM with the optical tach?
4-5 thousand is the midrange needle to the main jet area

convenient and reliable way to stabilize the valve body against the handle
