Thanks Jim, I actually needed the length. I read all I could find about
location and requirements etc for pitot tubes and it seems there are no
strict design requirements. So my new one will be rib 5 or 6 about 5" below
the wing surface.

I have a great location outside the Washington DC ADIZ and (2) nice
grass fields and on VA's Eastern shore! Campbell Airfield! The owner will
allow overnight camping and holds "SOUP ON SUNDAY" every Sunday when it is
cold, and burgers and dogs, drinks all for just a small donation. The area
has history and a very nice place to fly low and slow!!!!
Guys and Gals, lets make this East Coast Fly-In work were ever we go.

Great. Now we just need someplace interesting to fly to that's somewhere between
us. Looks like the midway point will be somewhere around the NC/VA border. Know
anything interesting in that area?

Whoohoo! Lots of great suggestions. No matter what happens, it's already raised
my spirits just to have this many people respond. So far, I count seven interested
pilots and almost as many suggested destinations :-). They all sound interesting
but Kitty Hawk is one that really stands out for me. The thought of
a flock of Kitfoxes gathering at the birthplace of aviation gets my heart pumping.
What do you say guys? Shall we make it Kitty Hawk?

As I understand it, a coarser pitch on your prop will reduce your rpms at higher
power settings, increase cruise speed and also raise your EGT's. I don't think
it will do much to reduce rpms at idle.

Please come! I started out addressing SE based pilots thinking that people further

A Rotec powered Kitfox is quite a unique specimen. It would be awsome if you could
make it. What kind of timeframe are you looking at?

Dear Listers:
I hate to bear bad news, but we (FAA) just got preliminary info on a
crash involving Lowell Fitt and his wife, yesterday morning at 0630. I
don't have any details. The local news sources are very limited at this
point.
Evidently they experienced some problem not long after taking off from
Cameron Park (home), and crashed on a street just a few miles to the
northeast. So far news reports say the two occupants received "moderate
injuries" and had been taken to a local hospital.
I will update when more is know.

Subject: | Found very heavy corrosion on struts. |
I decided to remove the old fairings the old struts that I have
replaced. I won't use them over but thought it might be worth hanging
onto them for a bit. Under the polyfiber covering I found heavily sanded
bright metal where the primer came off with the polyfiber and smotth
primer in the areaa where it didn't. The wood looks like nice straight
grained pine and still smells like freshly cut, very dry and light. In
the area downstrut from the jury strut mounts where weather or
condensate has been able to gather for about two feet there is very
heavy and scaly rust I took a wire brush to to it and then cut it in
several sections in this area and I don't think it represents anything
that would fail, yet. I just figured I'd mention it as a potential area
of concern. these are Denney/Skystar struts from 1991. The inside is
still dull grey and appears to have an oil coating.

Thanks, John, that's the news I wanted to hear. For you, guys in the
US: while I live in Europe and never had the pleasure to meet Lowell
and Kay, as some of you has, I nearly did last year, when I was about
to fly to San Francisco with my son. Lowell and Kay had invited me to
their place and I was really looking forward to meet them at Cameron
Park, the dream residence for pilots. Alas, a sudden illness of our
grand daughter prevented us to do the trip. Lowell has also helped me a
lot with parts for my plane.
I would like then join you to give my best wishes to Kay and Lowell for
a prompt return to a normal life and let me participate if we can do
anything to brighten their next days. Contact me off-list for any
arrangement.
Best regards,
Michel

As I understand it, a coarser pitch on your prop will reduce your rpms
at higher power settings, increase cruise speed and also raise your
EGT's. I don't think it will do much to reduce rpms at idle.

Terrible news of Lowell and Kay's injuries and loss of a sweet aircraft !
Great news that they will mend and hopefully get back in the saddle again in
the near future.

I just got this from the Sacramento Bee website:
Small plane crash injures two in Placerville
By Niesha Lofing - Bee Staff Writer
Last Updated 9:24 am PDT Thursday, August 30, 2007
A small plane has crashed in Placerville near the El Dorado campus of
Folsom Lake College, injuring two Cameron Park residents on board.
The experimental plane took off at 6:15 a.m. and was headed for Idaho,
said El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy Phil Chovanec. It went down about
15 minutes later on private property on Greenwood Lane, just north of
Green Valley Road, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Kevin House.
The man and woman, whose names were not released, were taken to area
hospital, where they are listed in stable condition. Both are conscious
and are being treated for moderate injuries.
The FAA identified the aircraft as N96KL owned by Lowell Fitt of Cameron
Park. In my initial post I said this happened yesterday, but I
now, believe it happened this morning. It has not hit the FAA Preliminary
Accident data yet.

As I understand it, a coarser pitch on your prop will reduce your rpms at
higher power settings, increase cruise speed and also raise your EGT's. I
don't think it will do much to reduce rpms at idle.

It is really sad to hear about this. Glad they will be ok. Now for the airplane,
it's his baby, he will hurt at that lose. He may have future problems with
the FAA, maybe a check ride. He will have withdrawls, he WILL have problems
with getting back in the saddle, his wife will have problems of this kind as
well. I wish him all that can be given for the hurdles he has in store. I personally
know what it's like to crash an airplane, not fun, the aftermath that
is. Many people come back and bash you as a pilot, not fun either. I wish Lowell
and his wife the best.

I went out to the airport to fly the Fox the other night. I have the
912UL. I have not flown in over a month and a half. I removed my oil cap
to cycle the prop through. The prop seemed to be frozen. In the past I
have removed a plug and let the oil seep out as I was cranking the
engine and it locked. Anyway, while I was standing there I leaned on the
prop as it was at the horizontal. Ever so lightly I leaned on the prop
and applied a little constant pressure and it cycled through. I
continued to cycle the prop and after what seemed like a short period of
time (Less than normal) it did the customary "Gurgle." I started the
engine and got a bunch of smoke coming from my exhaust. It seemed to do
it for about 200' and then it stopped. It looked like I was spraying for
misquitos. I went ahead and flew and the engine ran perfect. I assume
that I had some oil in one of the cylinders when it seemed to be locked.
Does anyone concur with that. I don't think I bent a rod because it ran
perfect as it always does. It hasn't belched or f _ _ ted in 300 hours.

Not anything to worry about. The two back cylinders are the ones that get the
oil. Mainly because of the tail wheel. Next time you can just remove the back
spark plugs and spray some brake cleaner in there and wash out the oil in the
cylinders and of course burp the system. Then you can start it without the oil
burn, otherwise you can just do what you did and leave a smoke trail.

I have several instruments that some of the new builders may need. All
are new and still in the original boxes. If interested email me direct
at jimmieblackwell@austin.rr.com or call me at 512 695-6627. Each
instrument has the appropriate connectors, panel attaching hardware,
sensors and senders.
Following are the instruments:
Dual oil temperature and pressure by Westberg, includes sensors and
sendors.
Cylinder Head temperature by Westberg, includes sendor.
Fuel level by Westberg.
Air Path Compass
Airspeed indicator, 0-120mph, by Airwolf
Altimeter
Prefer to sell them altogether. To buy them from Spruce and Air Wolf
would cost over $800. I will take $500 for all them and pay for
shipping.
Be happy to talk to anyone interested.
Thank you.
Jimmie

So glad they are OK!

John
Thanks for asking and glad Rocky and Denise are there safe. Better hide
your Tequilla with Rocky around!
Sure would like to have come up there. These days we have to stay close
to the homestead to help our daughter take care of 9 month old triplet
boys. Maybe can come up next year.
Take good care of Rocky and Denise. They great folks.

I am giving some consideration to getting one of the Zaon Flight Systems
PCAS. Was hoping that some of you have experience with this system.
Sure would like to hear opinions/experience with this equipment or
alternate systems.
Thanks
