#34
CONCERN: (MINOR)(PRIMARILY SERIES V) FIBERGLASS SEAT BREAKING RESULTING
IN JAMMED CONTROL LINKAGE
DATE: 6-29-99
IMPACT: Breaking of the seat or seat coming loose from the fuselage
support tubes could result in the below control tubes becoming
Jammed. A complete loss of control of the aircraft could
occur.
"LIST": 1. Ensure the seat is properly and securely attached to the
fuselage tubing
2. Look at reinforcing the fiberglass seat in the areas where
it attaches to the tubes
3. Provide full length support from top to bottom (seat lips)
with either stainless strap or webbing of some sort.
4. Consider using metal hose clamps vice plastic tie wraps to
secure the seat.
5. Inspect the seat frequently for signs of cracking.
Especially after any hard landings.

My model IV has three holes at the leading edge of the horizontal
stabilizer. I had to lower the leading edge to the lowest hole to get
proper trim in cruise and then there is not much to spare.
Nevertheless, I have no problem trimming for cruise and have left it
that way for six years.

I recently purchased a kitfox 4 1200 with a rotax 912. When we try
to trim it out in cruise speed there is still a tendency to nose down...
I'm lazy and don't want the back pressure... Do any of you guys use
elevator trim and just move the flaperons full forward ? Also, it's a
torquey little beast at full power... It likes a lot of right rudder on
climbout... Should I bend the tail trim a little further and use the rt.
rudder less on climbout our just get used to it ??? Any comments from
you old pros will be gladly accepted... Steve Bennett Durham NC.

Barry,
I have 3 holes on my IV as well -
--top hole for Wheel and skis
bottom hole when on floats.
fly hands free in straight and level flight.
Kitfox controls are essentially very light and I really have little need for trim
although if I had it I would use it likely.

I resealed my leaking left 6 gal tank with Kreem about 2 years ago. I
bought three quart cans of the stuff so I could sure there was enough
volume in there to reach all the spots. Real fun to turn the wing this
way and that to get all surfaces covered.
Before that I used acetone to clean the tanks out. Says use MEK but the
acetone dissolved the old Kreem (from about 1991) just fine. The new
sealer has been doing just fine since then.
However, I noticed something while trying to clean up after the fact.
After drying for a few days the new Kreem would not dissolve in acetone.
MEK "bleached" it some but didn't dissolve it. Since this stuff was
clogging the vent tube of my gas cap and my old filter screen I forgot
to remove I started trying other things. Denatured alcohol didn't
remove it. Nor did brake cleaner. Or that carb cleaner that comes in a
bucket you dip parts into. Or Varsol. Or anything else I tried.
So I pitched the old screen and spent some quality time with a piece of
thick safety wire digging the stuff out of my vent tube.
Now I didn't have any Methanol to try but I doubt it will touch it.

I bought my Model IV kit in 1996 and used the Kreem in the tanks. I
have
been flying since 2000 and have had no problem with fuel contamination
nor
water in the fuel. My fuel lines are a combination of the rubber hoses
and
aluminum that came with the kit. The site gages turned dark, got
brittle
and one of them broke departing Oshkosh in 2006. I replaced them with
nylon
tubing that is not as transparent but still works and has not been a
problem.

Well, the stars did align properly and N5929 left the earth twice
yesterday. Flew as well as expected (high expectations) with no major
issues. Took a little over 5 yrs to give birth (and women think they
have it bad with 9 mos :-) ).
What one realizes very quickly is that building an airplane isn't done
by one's self-takes a tolerant family, lots of folks (mostly other
builders, to include those on the list) with 'what can I do to help you'
attitudes, and maybe even some divine assistance/encouragement to align
the stars. Thanks to all in contributing to making this 'once in a life
time' experience come to fruition!

Did a "build time" search with no luck. I would appreciate some input on the actual
build time for the Series 7/Super Sport.
Also, how practical is the folding wing feature? Is it as quick and easy as stated
on the website? It would be nice not to have to pay hangar fees.

I bought a fast build kit that another builder just started ( I redone most everything
just to be sure ) last sept and should be done this oct.
wing fold can be done by one person in a few minutes.
just make sure to put a lock open drain with hose connection on the header tank.

Actual build time would be hard to give. It took over 10 years. It would
sit years at a time. Sometimes time and no money for parts, sometimes parts
and no time. That and a college deg, wife, child and 3 jobs.
As for the folding wings, I would not want to trailer her to the airport
every time I wanted to fly. It would probably keep me from flying as much.
But they do come in handy. 205AK has been in 3 parades and 2 show and tells
all on her trailer. She has even gone home on the trailer due to a broken
bungee.

Have you checked the placement of the horizontal stabilizer leading edge? If the
plane is otherwise rigged properly, maybe it needs to go into a lower hole.

I agree with the other responses you've gotten on this part: set the trim tab so
you can put your feet on the floor in cruise. But don't leave them there...

It CAN be very practical. I fold every time I fly, usually
3-4 times per week, and store in a toy box. However I was very
careful to make it as easy as possible to do. Just give it some
thought when you put together the fuel, pitot, and electrical system
and you'll be fine. You'll also want to pay attention to forward and
aft wing supports when folded.

I too unfold and fold mine for every flight. It's great! I'd also mention draining
fuel post-flight as an important consideration. There's already alot of weight
on the tailwheel with wings folded and tanks empty.
P.S. Real nice article in Sport Aviation, Guy. Beautiful airplane. Can you ID
the people in the photo for us?
