Ray,
Be cautious as to what type of rubber or rubber cork/rubber gasket material
is used when exposing it to auto gas. Some of the rubber and plastic
materials will be adversely affected by it. I don't think I would use an
inner tube if I were ever going to use auto gas. Try putting a piece of
whatever material you choose in a closed container of auto gas for a few
days and see how it is affected before using it in an aircraft fuel system.
Little pieces of cork or paper are very difficult to get out of a wing tank,
and can plug up a lot of things in a fuel system. The only material I use
for quick drain "O" rings is Viton. The stuff is virtually unaffected by
auto gas. It is also available in sheets of various thickness.

I went up the other day JUST to do stalls. I had been having trouble
landing from coming in too fast, so I felt it was time to revisit
some stalls and see it the plane still stalled at the same speeds as
it did when first flown...yup...45 (mph) clean, 40 with 10 degrees
flap, and 35 with full (20 degrees) flaps. I always land with full
flaps, and slip when needed to about 10 -15 feet off the deck, then
straighten out and pull back when appropriate.

Mercedes Benz # 140-471-00-79 appears to still be available on-line
at a variety of auto parts stores. Just Google "Mercedes
140-471-00-79" and you'll get a few hits to work from. ($2.27 at
www.importpartsspec.com) These have been recommended for the last
seven years in the archives so I think their longevity is probably
satisfactory. (I've only been using them for a year.)

Someone on the list told me couple of years ago that a replacement gasket
for a particular model Mercedes auto fit perfectly, and it did. I can't
remember which model it was, but perhaps you could use the Matronics search

All I can say is WOW !!!
What a great fly-in ! With 40 Aircraft yes 40 aircraft, 7 of those were
not Kitfoxs.. That makes for 33 Kitfoxs at the first annual Kitfox fly-in
We also had 2 new aircraft added to the Kitfox family during the weekend We
received 2 new airworthiness inspections and accomplished 2 first flights
When the folks from Texas (Rocky & Denise) say you had some excellent BBQ..
you know it was some good food.
Thank you !!
Will have some more pics on the web soon.

No, I use slips (forward and side) all the time to dump altitude and for cross-wind
correction. But I was trained (in a PA-11) not to cross-control close to
the ground at or near stall speed. Instructor: "You GD fool! Wadda ya trying to
do? Kill me??"
I'll try it at altitude sometime and see what happens.

mutually exclusive.
I just did 5 take off and landings in a cross wind with the nose pointed into
the wind atleast 10 degrees. Let the plane fly and in ground effect straiten
up and land. Kitfox's spin ??? Anything will spin if the limit is pressed,

Ray,
Viton rubber has "A-Excellent" resistance to leaded and unleaded gasoline
according to Cole-Parmer's chemical resistance guide. I found it
in McMaster-Carr in 1/32" and 1/16" sheets as small as 4" wide and
cut to any length you want. You may find a supplier you prefer. Good

Subject: | 121.5 ELt termination |
In Feb 2009 the Copus-Sarsat will discontinue monitoring 121.5 ELT
signals. You guys out there who are currently building might want to
re-think installing one of these ELTs. In less than 18 months they'll
be almost useless. There is an alternative.
I've pasted the FAA notice below.
Deke Morisse
Mikado Michigan
S5/Subaru/CAP 355+ TT
Termination of 121.5 MHz Beacons for Satellite Alerting is Coming Soon
Notice Number: NOTC0981
On 1 February 2009, the International Cospas-Sarsat[1] Organization
(U.S.
included) will terminate processing of distress signals emitted by 121.5
MHz
Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs). This means that pilots flying
aircraft
equipped with 121.5 MHz ELTs after that date will have to depend on
pilots of
over flying aircraft and or ground stations monitoring 121.5 to hear and
report
distress alert signals, transmitted from a possible crash site.
Why is this happening?
Although lives have been saved by 121.5 MHz ELTs, the downside has been
their
propensity to generate false alerts (approximately 98 percent of all
121.5 MHz
alerts are false), and their failure to provide rescue forces with
timely and
accurate crash location data. Both of which actually delay rescue
efforts and
have a direct effect on an individual's chance for survival.Rescue
forces have
to respond to all 121.5 MHz alerts to determine if they are real
distress alerts
or if they are being generated by an interferer, an inadvertent
activation (by
the owner) or equipment failure.
Is there an alternative?
Yes, the Cospas-Sarsat System (U.S. included) has been and will continue
processing emergency signals transmitted by 406 MHz ELTs. These 5 Watt
digital
beacons transmit a much stronger signal, are more accurate, verifiable
and
traceable to the registered beacon owner (406 MHz ELTs must be
registered by the
owner in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
regulation).
Registration allows the search and rescue authorities to contact the
beacon
owner, or his or her designated alternate by telephone to determine if a
real
emergency exists. Therefore, a simple telephone call often solves a 406
MHz
alerts without launching costly and limited search and rescue resources,
which
would have to be done for a 121.5 MHz alert. For these reasons, the
search and
rescue community is encouraging aircraft owners to consider retrofit of
406 MHz
ELTs or at a minimum, consider the purchase of a handheld 406 MHz
Personal
Locator Beacon (PLB) which can be carried in the cockpit whil
e continuing to maintain a fixed 121.5 MHz ELT mounted in the
aircraft's tail.
Remember, after February 1, 2009, the world-wide Cospas-Sarsat satellite
system
will no longer process 121.5 MHz alert signals. Pilots involved in
aircraft
accidents in remote areas will have to depend on pilots of over flying
aircraft
and or ground stations to hear emergency ELT distress signals. For
further
information concerning the termination of 121.5 MHz data processing
visit
www.sarsat.noaa.gov
[1] The Cospas-Sarsat Organization provides a satellite based world-wide
monitoring system that detects and locates distress signals transmitted
by
Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs), Emergency Position Indicating
Radio
Beacons (EPIRBs) and Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs). The system
includes space
and ground segments which process the signals received from the beacon
source
and forwards the distress alert data to the appropriate
RescueCoordinationCenter
for action.

This is how I understand things. I talked to my local fsdo and was told that we
can not use a 406 portable as our primary. These are around 600dollars. I
will be having two airplanes. So my problem is, I don't want to spend big bucks
to have two planes with a 406 that is certified for the airplane, generally
1500 dollars each. So I asked if I put in the old ELT system and buy a portable
will that work. He said yes it will. So if you want to save some bucks and
have a system that WORKS, than buy a portable 406 which is registered under
the user, and retain the old ELT system for satifying the regs. That's my plan
anyway.

Mike Allen wrote:
Also, how practical is the folding wing feature? Is
it as quick and easy as stated on the website? It
would be nice not to have to pay hangar fees.
For a Model IV Speedster, I go slow because each time
is an invitation to damage something. It takes about
20-30 minutes, and sometimes longer, to get it secured
on the trailer, ready to tow, plus tow time about 3
miles to the barn. Loading is quick, folding is
quick, but properly securing everything takes a while.
Not for flying every day. For that, I leave it out.
When time comes to put it away, I make sure the gas is
burned down. Folding is handy to take it somewhere to
work on it or to stuff into a small extra space in a
hanger. Unfolding and unloading takes about the same
time as folding and loading.
