Subject: | Re: simple question, hard answer IRON FOR SHRINKING |
B&D S220 worked for me....twice...I dropped the first one after the
plane was 1/2 done, and found a second model of the same type. The
calibration took me over 3 hours each time. The bulb type thermometer
would not give me the exact upper and lower temps that I wanted to
see, so I also included a digital thermometer when I calibrated both
my irons. This way I could see exact numbers, and not just a red
line, and having to interpolate between rather coarse lines on the
bulb type. That said, I found that the iron I mentioned ranged from
20-30 degrees all across the temp settings. I calibrated my iron with
the same extension cord that I was going to use during the whole
covering process, using the same outlet...ok, so I'm anal. :)
It just happened that I calibrated the irons late at night...no
mowers or chainsaws in the neighborhood at that hour....when it was
quiet, and I could hear the internal switch inside the iron clicking
on and off as it reached the ends of the heat range....you need to
have the rock and roll turned off to achieve this, I found.
Once you have the numbers written down, it's an easy matter to choose
the average temp for that setting and go with it, knowing it will
fluctuate (in my case) 10-15 degrees each way from that average.

Harold, I think your idea of referring to FAA AC 43.13-1b is good but I
just reviewed my copy and could not find information on feeding through
the firewall. Can you give me the section and page number where I can
find this?

You should get FAA AC 43.13-1b Aircraft Inspection and Repair Manual.
It's the aircraft mechanics Bible. Published by Jeppesen. I think I paid
about $20.00 For it. Answered most of my questions when I built my S5.
I'm now restoring a J3 cub. Couldn't do it right without this manual.

I used the screw together electrical fittings that are available
from any electrical supply company. They have rubber stoppers in them
that can be split if needed to fit around tubes and wires and are
compressed with the outside nut. They also have a jam nut to firmly
attach to the firewall. This is not a good description but go to a
supplier and ask to see the feedthroughs that are used on junction
boxes.

I'm installing my 912 in a KF IV and have a question that seems
really dumb, but I can't find an answer in anything I've read.
What is the proper way to pass things like wires, hoses, and
tubing through the firewall? Is it through simple rubber grommets, or
is there a special fitting used?
thanks,

Dave and all, I had the same problem and finally found one that repeated
pretty well. I also have one of the small irons to be used for corners and
other tight places and it seems more consistant. Never the less, I drilled
out from the back of the bottom plate and inserted a metal thermometer so I
could get constant readings. Maybe this can be done for some household
irons also.

The hobby industry has a spring type thermometer used to calibrate the
irons. I believe it is made by monokote.

Guy, working on putting together a flight of 4 from KLGU for Saturday morning.
We will probably fly up the back(east) side of the Wasatch range to avoid the
Class B then west over Provo to Fairfield. Hope to see you there.

My firewall for my Series 7 came with a number of holes in it for wires, cables,
etc. My main question is with the heater. This thing mounts right behind the
firewall with the supply and return fittings passing through. What have people
done in this situation for fireproofing?

Guy, I have not been able to locate an identifier for the West Desert Air Park.
Do you have something that will help us?

Subject: | Lowell Fitt Update |
All,
I spoke briefly with Kay today. She's at home now under the
care of her daughter-in-law. She fractured a neck vertebrae and her
right thumb and had surgery for a puncture wound to her leg. The good
news is she's getting by with a neck brace and is otherwise fully functional.
I won't get into the gory details, (I'll leave that for
Lowell,) but he had a bad week last week as his digestive system shut
down. Apparently they changed his oil, bled the system, propped him a
bunch of times and got him re-started on Friday. He's apparently
getting much better and will be returning home tomorrow. He's in a
body brace because of a split disk in his lower spine so he won't be
very active for a while. (Not to mention the damage to his foot/ankle.)
Kay thanks you all for your concerns and kind wishes. (She's
been looking at the list traffic.) She said she and Lowell are
receiving excellent care and are in need of nothing but time to mend.

The identifier is UT99. AirNav has it but under a different name.
(UT99 is the correct identifier, though.) Check the web address
www.rmkplanes.com/Flyin.html for additional information.

When I built my wings I used yellow Tygon for fuel sight tubing. Finally
got to put some gas in the tanks. After about three weeks the tubing
discolored dark brown. Is there a better material to use that will not
discolor?
Thanks in advance
