Last weekend I got up early and took a trip up North with some friends...a
Rebel, a Stinson and a J3. All were on floats. This time of year in
Canada the leaves are changing color, and up North it is mostly forest so
we wanted to take in the view. If you like looking at pictures and video
clips of floatplanes check out the link below.

Subject: | Re: 4 stroke engine |
One of my favorite subjects: auto conversion vs. the "airplane" engine.
When it boils down to it the Jabiru/Rotax have a few things going for them:
-They are light!
-More popular kitplanes have a FWF package that fits and has been tested. This'll
save time and experimentation.
-They have worked the kinks out.
-There is a running list of service notices for the kinks yet to be found.
The auto engines:
-They cost a lot less.
-You design the FWF yourself so you are intimately familiar with every aspect.
-There are a lot of them to choose from with a large choice of hp.
About cost, though. There is a guy on the internet that built a Zodiac. Initially
he put in a VW but it wasn't powerful enough and overheated. He then switched
to a Corvair, but that engine had the crankshaft break. This is a relatively
frequent occurrence if the crank isn't reconditioned the precisely correct
way. I think he ended up buying a Jabiru. In the end the auto engine didn't
pay off.
I came to the conclusion that picking your engine is a factor of cost, capability,
and risk tolerance. If I lived in the Midwest with a kozillion acres of emergency
landing strips, I'd hang a Corvair on the front of a new Kitfox Super
Sport. But, right now I live/fly in Maine and plan on eventually doing some
west coast back country flying. I have a Rotax 912 on my Speedster and I'll probably
end up with a Jabiru on my next plane. The extra $10K will turn into
peace of mind while flying 50 miles from civilization over heavily forested real
estate with my son as copilot.

Mike,
Unfortunately MiPPi Ultralights doesn't sell the Kingfox tires anymore. I think
they closed their doors for good.
If you do find a set for sale, get them, especially if you fly off of grass. I
love them because I can get into about 5 or 6 inches of snow with no problem and
they make for a comfortable taxi. They are good in mud, puddles, and longer
grass too. There is less breaking action but unless you are flying from a 600'
strip this won't make a difference. They will also slow you down about 5
mph (more if you use wheel pants).
They are 21x12x8 I believe and I had a local ATV service shop mount the pair for
$30.

The tires sold as Kingfox are Nankang. Check the following Link. The tires
are listed on the bottom of the page.
http://www.tiresunlimited.com/nankang_atv_tires.htm
Also Goodyear makes a treadless tire, but it is smaller in diameter and
width. I was planning on ordering a pair to look at them until my airplane
turned to scrap metal.

Kitfox owners
MiPPi has 1 set of King Fox tires remaining, however a
couple of our dealers like Dave Fisher in Ontario
Canada and Infinify PPC (Sturgis, Mi) still have some
remaining stock as well.
Keep flying

Buy the tires... Build the rest of a plane around them ;-)
