I got some aerosol cans of etch primer and 12 feet of one eighth aluminium
tube. Bend a right angle in the tube close to the end and stick the spray
nozzle from a can in the end of the tube so it will squirt along in the
middle of the spar. Then attach the can to the other end of the tube and
slide it up the spar. No fuss, no mess, and it made a great job of painting
the inside, and from memory I think two cans did all four spars.

Hi
As an engineer I am shure (and all studies show this, use linke below) that bio-fuel
does NOT solve the CO2 problem, and does NOT solve the resource problem.
Bio-fuel must be produced.
If it is produced with corn (or sugar) the CO2 balance is worse than diesel per
Kwh, the overall energy efficiency range is -10% (!) up to +20%. A bad deal,
which cannot be a solution! Politicians only believe this.

Interesting topic 582 vs HKS.
What cruise speed so you get with the HKS ?
If you read the past post of mine you will see that the 582 in the Kitfox with
the exhaust mod done by Denny and Skystar cuts the max 64 hp from the 582 to I
am only guessing to 58 to 60 HP but fuel flow still the same.
Would be more than happy to compare results for performance. Post some videos like i did to show how it actually performs. My videos are all done before i corrected my exhaust so I can say the HP would be about the same as the HKS. http://www.cfisher.com/
> I can tell you that the HKS preforms just as well as the 582 in takeoff run climb
and does much better in cruise and of course at 3 gph vs 4.5 of fuel it can
fly 4.7 hrs vs 3 hr with my 15 gal of fuel.
> I'll fly against any 582 any day and it will be a real contest and the 582 will
lose.

Subject: | Re: Fuel tanks and TCP |
Michel:
A lot of what you say is spot on.
The lobbyists for ethanol are not willing to mention the amount of CO2 given
off when the corn is fermented. They also refuse for some reason to include
the fossil fuels used to plant, irrigate harvest and transport the raw corn.
They also won't discuss the amount of fossil fuel required to transport the
distilled ethanol to refineries. Ethanol cannot be sent through pipelines
as water is used to separate different grades of fuel in the same pipeline.
Ethanol forms a solution with water and there is some fear of corrosion
inside the pipeline too.
Last week there was a chemical engineer on the Discovery channel here. The
discovery channel specializes in science programming. This engineer said
that burning ethanol and bio diesel actually gives off a gaseous compound
that attacks the ozone layers.
I agree whole heartedly with you that burning fossil fuels is releasing
carbon compounds back into the atmosphere that have been deported to the
depths of the earth for millions of years. There has to be a better energy
supply. There are too many things wrong with production of ethanol and bio
Diesel to commit to that technology.
Lithium ion batteries seem to be a possible source to power an electric
vehicle, even an electric aeroplane. The electricity to recharge these
batteries can be made hydro electric systems, Wind power farms, photo
voltaic panels and let's not forget tidal power. All of these things and
other technologies like terrestrial heating and insulation should be
examined and put into as wide a use as possible quickly.
If there weren't enough wrong with using ethanol as a fuel on the ground
there are added dangers to flying with it. Fuel separation, increased
possibility for vapour lock and fuel separation are a few of the additional
dangers aviators will have to contend with.
The sooner we reduce and eventually remove our dependence on fossil fuels
and lubricants the better. Unfortunately ethanol isn't the answer.

What is wrong with the 582 ?

Kitfox II has lower gross weight than a later model ? 950 lbs ?
So you areliekly about 450 lbs with 582 now ? that leave 500 lbs for fuels and
2 people.
Jab will be near the same weight and a 912 will add about 60 lbs.
VW I am not sure of weight, but the way to go on a VW is with a Redrive .
I think a Jab with a re drive would be an interesting experiment as well.

Subject: | Kitfox/Railroad Container Question |
The idea of using a container for storage is a good one. Most of them are
reasonably well sealed and if needed can be lined with plywood. I checked
around for a price on a well used model and the cost was prohibitive.
As for secure, my grand father used to say that a lock is only to tell an
honest man there's nobody home. Any one wanting to get into a container can
get in fast with a set of bolt cutters or at most a portable oxy fuel torch.
The up side is you would have a great natural wall for a mural and the top
could be converted to a nice sun deck ;-)

On a related topic those of you who like to imbibe a wee dram of JD in the
evening be prepared to pay more for it. The cost of the raw material is
rocketing up... when resources are available. Maybe more will have to
develop a taste for a good single malt Scotch or tea.

Subject: | Kitfox/Railroad Container Question |
FYI,
The company I bought my container from welds a metal box at the
locking place. The result is bolt cutters wont reach the lock. To
open the lock one has to get the feel for one of those round locks.
The bad guy has to have a cutting torch to get the door open. Its
probably easier to use a metal saw and just cut the side open.
Conclusion, very secure.
I noticed that one has to pick the correct container because some
have a smaller door openings than others. My measurements (92") was
the door openings.

You dont put the can up the spar. The can stays outside and the paint goes
up the tube. Although it is 12 feet from the can to the spray nozzle the
tube holds very little paint and the spray nozzle on the end of the tube
works just as well as if it were still on the can. Slide the tube up both
sides of the inserts, spraying as you pull it back out. Works perfectly.

Fellow Fox flyers,
I have a brand new, fully assembled, never run, 2276
Great Plains VW with a 1:6/1 reduction drive that I am
looking to sell.
I had intended it to power my Kitfox S7. My initial
intention was to install the VW because of its low
cost, weight, and ease of maintenance. This decision
was made when I was forced to let my medical lapse and
pursue sport pilot flying. My Fox is about 95%
complete and the is engine installed. Due to the fact
that I am now able to obtain a valid medical, I am now
going to install a larger (and heavier) engine to meet
the aircraft's 1550# gross weight capacity. I have
listed the particulars of the engine below. The total
cost of this engine if purchased from Great Plains is
over $6800 (plus $850 for assembly and crating).
If interested please e-mail me off list and I will
send you pictures of the engine and accessories.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. 920

Subject: | More starting problems |
Now that I've solved my cold starting problems with my 912UL, I've discovered another
annoying issue. It doesn't want to start warm. That is, if I shut the engine
down after a flight, it starts right up if I crank within a couple of minutes.
If I let it cool down more then that, then it won't start until I let it
cool down all the way (takes a couple of hours). It's not a situation that I
find myself very often but it bit me on two recent cross country flights where
I loitered too much during a fuel stop. When it happens, I can crank the battery
dry and it won't get a single pop from the ignition regardless of throttle
or choke position (the only two inputs I have). Any ideas?

Subject: | Re: Kitfox/Railroad Container Question |
I was thinking about a shipping container awhile back and determined that it wouldn't
be wide enough. Here's another thought. You could get a junked 10' wide
mobile home very cheap on wheels and cut it down to trailer size or just cut
the frame down and build your own walls anyway you want. Leave enough room inside
to store odds & ends with the plane. Steel up any windows and make it look
like a trailer (not a mobile home) to avoid any complaints from neighbors/county
etc. It might not be as secure as a container but if they're determined enough
they'll get into anything. Anyway this might beat having to go through the
building dept. & all to build another garage.

Yes,
I had one to explode on my Kitfox II. The company
had a problem sometime back (Wasn't vented). They fix the
problem and sent me a replacement.

I agree to the heat soak problem. When my fox started doing that I did two
things, one I opened the oil access door any time I landed knowing I was
going to leave. 2 I installed an electric fuel "primer" pump under my seat.
I have had no problems with it since.

I have this crazy dream to hook up with say 10 other kitfoxers who have the same
dream and make it a reality. 10 guys who are able to devote say 50K each to
purchase the perfect piece of America for an airpark. Rural, but not dead. Beautiful,
uncrowded, with a river closeby (for floats/amphibs). No snobs, silly
CCR's, etc. Camp if you like. Live in a box. No one's business. Only about the
planes and the flying. Montana or northern Idaho. Be gentle now...after all,
it's my dream... Is there anyone else interested in pooling resources? 10 guys
could make it work. John Sandt, Ridgecrest, CA
