Thank GOD,,you guys are doing fine now Lowell Family.air planes can be
replaced.people can not.and the kitfox saved you both.would another
aircraft saved you in the same matter??I may think not.it just shows you
and to the rest of us.what a little Kifox can go through and walk away
from in a accident as your.with out beeing __ __ __....I hope that I do
not go through what U did.but if I do I want to know what the little
Kitfox can do in this type of accident as yours.I belive I too could

Finally tracked down all my Aerocet documentation. They were tucked in an
Aircraft Spruce catalog. I have pdf'ed everything and posted them to my
web site. See the address below. Go to the Aerocet Float folder. There
are three PDF files. Two are the installation instructions, one being for
the straight floats and the other for the anphibs. You need both as the
anphib guide takes over where the straight float guide leaves off. The
third pdf is the exploded assembly drawings and parts listing. Also
included is the procedure for checking the main gear over centre position,
and the rigging instructions for the cables that operate the gear. If you
have a set of these floats, download, print and protect these. They
really come in handy.

Are you operating the radio from the aircraft 12V system? Do you hear
the
static on receive?

Noel & Michel~ Thanks for the help with the static radio problem.
My
power plant is a Sooby EA81 engine. The interference starts at 3000 rpm
but
it's clear to those listening to me. I have an external antenna mounted
behind the turtle deck. I'll check all your suggestions and see if I
can
get to hear the tower better. Thanks, Layne Series 5 EA81 Sooby

I just thought of more sources of static.
First is the ECU for your Subie... the case should be very well
grounded (
my old beef) Although I seriously doubt that's your problem.
Next is the possibility of a cracked ignition coil. It is possible that
one
of your coils is breaking down and arcing above 3000 rpm.
Finally check out your alternator. I can't say why, but what I would be
looking for is worn out brushes, springs or any puffy looking capacitors
that you may find associated with your charging system. Check for dark
spots on the slip rings of the alternator. While you are at it check
out
the connections from your voltage regulator to your field coil.
Being mounted outside your antenna will be using your frame as a ground
plane. Assuming the mount was cleaned before the antenna was installed
there probably won't be any problem there. I'd still get the SWR
checked as
part of the annual though. It only takes a few seconds especially if
you
have a noise bridge ( piece of technical equipment)
Too bad we can't hear the type of hash you are getting.

Layne, when I had a Rotax 582, I also experienced statics at and above a certain
RPM. I then moved the regulator from nearby the radio to ahead of the firewall.
RFI were gone! The reason was: The regulator is a switch-mode electronic one.
When the voltage exceed say 14 V, it chops electronically part of it to keep
it at that level. What I could hear was the 'chopping.' Distance and firewall
between the two ... et voila!
It is probably not your case but ... that's all I can think of. Good luck.
Cheers,

Lowell,
Excellent write up on the aftermath and saying good bye to your Kitfox. You owe
that Kitfox your lives possibly for taking hte brunt of the impact.
The construction of the Kitfox likely saved your lives. The Ability of the 4130
to absorb some of the impact. This cannot be compared but certainly in this
instance some of the alum tube aircraft that seem very popular perhaps the occupants
might not have faired as well.
Also, what was the cause of the oil issue that instigated the forced landing?
Certainly alot of 912 drivers must have the same curiosity.
What brand oil filter were you using ?
Glad to hear the "rod ends" were in fact intact.
I am waiting to see documentation showing 5 gs or 14 gs .

Hi guys,
I was looking at a Kitfox model IV kit on Barnstomers.com that is ready to cover.
It is setup as a tail tragger, but for personal preference and insurance reasons,
I would like to convert it to tricycle gear. Will the Super Sport nose
gear from Kitfox Aircraft work on a model IV? If not, what are my options?
I appreciate your thoughts and expertise.
Thanks,
Jason Cole

Dave,
I don't think we will ever know about the cause of the low oil pressure
gauge indication. I doubt the FAA or NTSB will spend a lot of time on this
due to the many other tasks at hand. The FAA guy said as much when he was
here at my home. He said that he was attempting to get a Rotax rep to look
at the engine, but to date there is no indication that that has been done.
At the time of his visit he was still investigating the fatal crash of the
Bonanza at Cameron Park that same morning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOaAZ1i2gNA
And comparitively speaking our mishap was like a fender bender to the
Highway Patrol.
My feeling, though, it was a faulty sender. On the Rotax 912 UL the oil
temp and oil pressure senders are in the front of the engine and in the air
flow right behind the prop. I had problems with the temp sender frequently
due to broken wires. This I attributed to the prop pulses on the wires. I
tied them in very tightly, but sometimes they lasted less than six months.
The pressure sender? I am not a trained investigator, but my impression is
that the engine was still running at the time of impact and neither Kay or I
recall a stationary prop blade during the descent. Interestingly enough, I
have an audio recording of that entire flight, but previous experience of
listening to recordings of stressful situations in my airplane makes me
reluctant to listen to it yet. I have lots of video and that is not a
problem blood pressure wise, but listening to the audio, for some reason, I
can feel my heart rate and adrenaline level rise. It would give the
duration of the let down as there is conversation between Kay and I as I
began the descent to the time of impact. I don't know how long a 912 would
run with no oil, but I am sure it was at least two or three minutes or more
after seeing the low oil pressure indication and the hard landing.

Layne,
What are the advantages of a Sooby EA81 engine? Are they reliable? Are
they easy to maintain or do you have to be a magician to keep them
running? Would you recommend that engine?

I noticed that the old sportplane llc web site was updated with a nose gear conversion
for a model 4:
http://sportplanellc.com/landing_gear.htm
It's not listed on the new kitfoxaircraft.com web site so maybe they dropped it
but it's worth a try.

Jason,
John McBean at Kitfox Aviation has the info you need. I suggest calling
him and talking. I don't believe the SuperSport nosegear will work on the
IV, however, they will have what you need for the IV.

Jason,
I believe the later 4's had the plates necessary to convert. We are doing a
model 1 now and it is extensive work.
John at the factory has everything you need to do the job, he has been a
great help for us.
