Subject: Make Sure You're Listed! List of Contributors Published
Dec 1! Dear Listers, The List of Contributors (LOC) is just around the corner! On December 1st I post a list of everyone that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its my way of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation for the Lists. As a number of people have pointed out in their Contribution comments, these Lists seems at least as valuable of a building/flying/recreating tool as a typical your magazine subscription! And how interactive is a magazine, after all? Won't you take minute and assure that your name is on the upcoming LOC? Tell others that you appreciate the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is fast and easy using your Visa, MasterCard, or Paypal account: http://www.matronics.com/contribution Or, by dropping a personal check in the mail to: Matronics / Matt Dralle PO Box 347 Livermore CA 94551-0347 USA (Please include your email address on the check!) I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus far during this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps these Lists running and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about how the Lists have helped you! Thank you! Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Administrator

    From: "Michel Dierick" <michel.dierick@skynet.be>
Hi, I tried to make a beautiful flight last Saturday but it turned out completely different. 1. It was quit cold. The mechanic on my airfield advised me to put tape over the radiator in order to prevent too much cooling. (Radiator was covered for 70%...). 2. Oil-mixture in the fuel. He proposed 1,8% instead of 2%. What I did. After all, he is the expert (was in a previous young life also mechanic on two-stroke competition motorbikes) and I'm completely new and unexperienced in two-stroke engines. (In my country, we say I'm green behind my ears) The flight became a complete horror. On take-off, the engine didn't reach 6500rpm full power, just 6000rpm It wasn't running like a Swiss watch but made a lot of vibrations. My Kitfox climbed slowly and after reaching 2000ft altitude, I began to smell molten plastic AND the engine started to cough 3-4 times ! I quickly scanned my instruments and saw the water temp was rising to 115C... Damned !! I immediately reduced power, went into a gently dive and made a emergency landing on my airfield. During descent, I saw the water temp becoming normal (85C). It was obvious that the temp was a direct result of too much tape over the radiator. But was caused the engine to cough ? Was it the high temperature ? Is it the oil mixture ? Somebody can help me ? I am not familiar with the water cooled rotax two strokes, just the air cooled ones, so I don't know what effect the high water temperature has. Cold air results in the engine running more lean than in warm air. Pull your sparkplugs out and post here what they look like and I am sure you will get some help from the 582 flyers. For what it is worth, the temperature here has been in the low to mid 20 degrees F for a few days. When I checked my Kitfox today there was ice in the panel tank vent line. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV, Phase one 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=148702#148702

It sounds like you had too much of the radiator covered. You already guessed that. One of the finicky things about two stroke engines is they have to have the mixture just about spot on. Lower the temperature of the air 40 to 50 F and you will find the engine runs too lean. This is because there is actually more air and O2 getting into the engine at the lower temperatures. For this reason most of the guys and gals will lift the needles in their carbs a notch this has the effect of enrichening the mixture at less than full throttle. This is usually enough correction but you may have to swap the main jets for a larger size. Try http://www.800-airwolf.com/articles.htm for jet sizes. http://www.ultralightnews.ca/ definitely has a chart of jets etc. for different field altitudes and temperatures. Finally Dave Fisher on this group does hundreds of hours a year on a R582. Contact him or Bob Robertson also on this group to get the straight dope on the mixture. I just thought of one other thing.... If you are flying with ethanol contaminated gasoline and pre mixing the gas you may also be experiencing a phase separation of the gas and oil at the cooler temperatures. Best bet is not to use any gas contaminated with Ethanol. If you have to use Ethanol contaminated fuel, also use oil injection.
