I thought about this and the first thing that came to mind is that you
likely wont taxi far, and you have to bleed the fuel system before takeoff.
Most kitfoxes with wings folded have a limited fuel load to keep the vents
from bleeding fuel. As you fold the wings what fuel there is tends to move
away from the pickups, so you may be running on the header tank only and
introducing air.
People who actually have FLYING Kitfoxes may find this is wrong, it's just
the way I figured it would turn out.

I think the one I used is the Camloc access door. p/n05-02124...
$12.50 ea, page 107 of this year's Aircraft Spruce Catalog...and let
me go on record as saying that the Spruce cat. has to be one of the
MOST frustrating to try to find anything...like this....in! You've
got to paw through the pages as opposed to going to the going to the
index, because either they don't know what to call something, or they
assign a page number to it, and it's not there, or even close to
there.......ok, rant over, if you persevere, you'll find it, I'm sure.

Subject: | Re: taxy with the wings folded |
I few of my thoughts on the "idea"
I would not want to travel with folded wings without wing root braces.
Then you have to fold out your wings and possibly would have missing hardware that
you forgot, hence a trip back to hangar.
Heavy load on tail wheel spring.
Lack of being able to have full fuel tanks.
End of flapperons come into cabin and might hit you in back of head?
Where you going to put turtle deck ?
If Controlled airport -- might be an issue trying to get a clearance to unfold
your wings on taxiway.?
Basically I have no idea why anyone would to do this, perhaps you could advise
us of the reason you ask to do this ? If there an issue of taxing with wings
folded? Your Kitfox wings are likely 10 times or more stronger rigged than folded,
alot of strain on the rear spar at the first rib. Besides, you are
better off getting it all rigged and checked over without having the feeling of
having to rush .

Subject: | Re: Rotax 582 & Oil% |
Hey Michel,
Others on the list may be thinking what I am, but since no one else has
said it yet:
I would pull the heads and cylinders and look very carefully at the
pistons and the cylinder walls. Just taking the exhaust off and looking
in isn't good enough. There have been several engines that have started
to have problems with pistons seizing with much less abuse than this
motor has been given. Just because the motor seems to run OK doesn't
mean there isn't some damage. It is typical of the 2-stoke to run fine
after an event but still have aluminum on the cylinder wall and galled
pistons. It will fail on you and maybe at a very bad time.
You'll need a top end gasket set and this one will work just fine:
http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/712194.html?id=rQMfuDpQ
If you need it (you shouldn't) this is a mostly full gasket set but I
don't use the crankshaft seals. The Rotax ones are much better.
However, the gastets, RV/water pump seals and O-rings are perfectly OK.
There are a few parts missing for the 582 but this will still save you
$$$.
http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/711194.html
If the cylinders are scratched and the pistons galled then you will need
to hone the cylinders. The cylinders are hard enough that you may well
be able to get by just cleaning them with Muratic acid to remove any
aluminum and honing with a ball hone to re-establish the cross-hatch
pattern. De-carbon the pistons and start measuring. Light galling can
also be touched up as the pistons are very tough.
None of the work is difficult just time consuming.

But was caused the engine to cough ? Was it the high temperature ? Is
it the oil mixture ?

Normal temps are not 85C - that Is getting into the "caution area" of
a 582
( 80C to 90C - 176 to 200F ) You can run at 180 without issues
but
it leave little room for error. You were running at 240 F (115C )
WAY
TOO HOT........ 70% of RAD covered? I would rather see 70% of Rad
open on
a stock Kitfox Rad...... ( 4" b y 20" = 80 sq inches)
Why you smell molten plastic ? Did you find anything melted ? Likely
not but
that Engine was telling to it was VERY HOT.
You never said was your outside air temp was ?
You never said what kind of oil you used ?
Mixture on Pre mix should be 50 to 1 = 2%
Oil injected engines will run leaner than that over all - BUT they
supply oil
with demand .. eg full throttle = about 50 to 1 mix but at reduced
throttle
you might run 70 to 1........ If you try to skimp on oil ratio then
it is
possible you will not have enough oil under full throttle and high load
conditions.
I would run some static ground run ups prior to next flight of duration
of 2
to 5 minutes at full throttle to make sure you have similar to full
load climbout
engine checks. Depending on Prop your static can range from 6000 to
6500. Where were your EGT gauges through alll of this ?

Get an old skidoo and mount tundra tires where the skis are...makes a great
little tractor. Without going the power route you could make a dolly for
the tail wheel. It should take the load just in front of the tail spring
and the dolly will need to be able to handle a load of close to 150 lb. To
give a margin of strength. Open the wings, temporarily to put the tail up
on the dolly and to take it down. You could leave the tail up on the dolly
in the garage too.
I think an American Flyer wagon will probably be a bit too light but you can
build something using old bicycle wheels. The larger the wheel the easier
it will be to pull. Oh yes pulling is easier than pushing.

OK, I haven't been flamed in a while so I'll just blurt it out. I know a lot
of people are thinking it anyway.
You're crazy, that is a stupid idea for more reason's than there is time
in the day to answer. If you reply, with the same question my four year
old would, which is "why?". Then in my opinion you should be banished
from the list - Forever.
Ok, one little elaboration. BECAUSE the next question you'll ask is -
Can I fly it with the wings folded, sort of like an F-14?
Ok, I don't text message on the cellphone, but I think the appropriate
mesg would be ROFLMAO
:)
Regards,
Jeff.

There is some damage to the tail fuselage to my Kitfox One.? The tubing is bent
in the under belly near the rudder and the rudder is bent and the tubing is worn.?
My AP noticed it and says that the rudder needs to be repaired or replaced
and a new tube welded in to replace the bent one and the rudder will need a
new tub and fabric.? The AP doesn't feel qualified to do the welding.? Where
do I go from here?? Is there anyone? in the Green Bay Wisconsin area who you might
know who would do this repair??
Jerry

I don't know if EAA wants us to do this, but I pulled a list of
Wisconsin Technical Counselors from their web site. I don't see any
in Green Bay, but maybe you can locate one who can lead you to an
appropriate repair person. I tried to find A&Ps, but all I got was
supermarkets.

I bet you could find an EAA chapter around green bay that could help you do
it your self. That is one of the best parts of an experimental. No A & P
required.

I don't know if EAA wants us to do this, but I pulled a list of Wisconsin
Technical Counselors from their web site. I don't see any in Green Bay, but
maybe you can locate one who can lead you to an appropriate repair person. I
tried to find A&Ps, but all I got was supermarkets.

I would think that being that close to the EAA "Mecca" there should be
lots of good aircraft tubing welders around. I suspect you'll get some
good hits right here though.
What happened to it?

Subject: Kitfox-List: rudder repair
There is some damage to the tail fuselage to my Kitfox One. The
tubing is bent in the under belly near the rudder and the rudder is bent
and the tubing is worn. My AP noticed it and says that the rudder needs
to be repaired or replaced and a new tube welded in to replace the bent
one and the rudder will need a new tub and fabric. The AP doesn't feel
qualified to do the welding. Where do I go from here? Is there anyone
in the Green Bay Wisconsin area who you might know who would do this
repair?

Ok you must have some kind of obstruction between the hanger and the runway
that you cannot pass with the wings out. That said I would not taxi with
the wings folded as you have cut the mounting surface in half ( front wing
bolt removed ) and left the leading edge unsupported. This could cause a
twisting force on the wing that it was not designed to take. In a worst
case scenario breaking the epoxy joint between the spar and rib in a place
that is not easily found. That is just my opinion and I am in no way an
expert.

Ok, one little elaboration. BECAUSE the next question you'll ask is -
Can I fly it with the wings folded, sort of like an F-14?

Subject: | Re: access cover for oil |
Jerry,
The Series 7 has a molded impression for the oil door which is cut out and an aluminum
cover is hand bent to shape and installed with an aluminum piano hinge.
The Kitfox manual has you secure the latch using winged camlocs but I like
the flush latch closure better. If your cowl doesn't have the molded impression,
simply fabricate a latch cover from a piece of aluminum that is the same thickness
as your cowl then bend it to shape. Once you are satisfied with the
shape, you can place this cover on the cowl and trace it. Then carefully cut
and sand/file the opening to shape allowing for a 1/16 clearance on each side.
Then glue and rivet strips of aluminum under the cowl for the latch to rest
against and finish the install by gluing and riveting the piano hinge on. The
piano hinge knuckles will require a bit more than 1/16" clearance so trial fit
this and trim as necessary. See my installation for ideas. This is a good,
functional installation and looks good to. Hope this helps.

Remember you are working with chromoly tubing...its takes a slightly different
welding technique than regular steel. Having said this, any good welder will
know what filler material to use. Should be a pretty easy fix.

As Guy said, the piece you cut out of the cowling makes a perfect
door, there's no need to fabricate one. On my Model IV I had to put
the opening directly in the center to align with the oil tank and it
would have been tricky to precisely bend a piece of aluminum to the
shape of the cowl which had a ridge down the middle.
I cut an aluminum frame to go under the opening to act as the stop
for the door and to reinforce the fiberglass. A piano hinge, a flush
latch, and some filler were all that was needed to make for a very
functional and attractive installation.
