Dear Listers, There are just a couple days left for this year's List Fund Raiser. Over all, participation has been good, but things have been pretty slow this week for some reason. If you've been putting off making your Contribution until the last minute, this is it! The last minute, that is... :-) Please remember that there isn't any sort of commercial advertising on the Lists and the *only* means of keeping these Lists running is through your Contributions during this Fund Raiser. Please make a Contribution today! http://www.matronics.com/contribution Thank you! Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Administrator

I agree with Mike completely about using the cutout especially if you have a situation like he had. Just a word of caution if you use the cutout peice of fiberglass...be very careful when cutting with your dremel as they can get away from you in a quick hurry and ruin your cutout. -------- Darin Hawkes Series 7 (under Construction) 914 Turbo Ogden, Utah Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=149257#149257

Oh, yeah I know, this is the kinder, gentler, more diplomatic version of me. Plus it's the holiday season and all. OK - Perhaps, there's a reasonable explanation for wanting to taxi with wings folded, but it's just too good an opportunity to pass up. Dave asks: >Is advertising on this list an option? >Is bagging for money a normal on other lists? In this case the request comes from Matronics, the company that provides the forum for this list. The entire operation is otherwise ad-free, meaning that Matt makes no money off of this or any of the other discussion lists they host (yes, there are many others). It still costs money to buy and operate the servers it runs on and to provide the excellent support we receive to keep the list running. Matt has elected to ask for voluntary contributions once each year rather than smear commercial ads all over the Matronics web pages and attach them to every message forwarded by his servers. This approach provides you with the freedom to decide with your dollars what value the list brings to you. You may not agree but, personally, I prefer not having to weed through all the crap that many web-based services include to sustain themselves. Mike G. Among others, I've seen them at Aircraft Spruce. Kitfox, LLC might have them as well, you should check with John McBean. Mike G. N728KF Phoenix, AZ

Hi, When the wings are folded minimal displacement of the rudder is available. If you are trying to taxi under power, the folded flaperons will block rudder travel. You won't be able to steer the aircraft very well... Joe Connell Stewartville, MN Kitfox-II N62JK

It's pretty much a guarantee that any decent local welding shop, that can do acetylene or tig can do a more than acceptable job for you. You can buy tubing from AC Spruce, and use RG-45 or RG-60 welding rod. I wouldn't get to worried about welding it, 4130 is VERY easy to weld well. That's a good reason to not try flying with the wings folded either! Limited rudder travel in flight! Jeff Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=149383#149383

Thinwall 4130 is not nearly as forgiving as mild steel to weld. Needs to be done in an absolute breeze free environment. For TIG ER70S-2 filler is recommended. Post weld annealing is always debated but I always run a torch over TIGed chromoly. Nice thing about the rudder is aside from the spar it's not all that complex or highly loaded so just about anyone decent with a torch (TIG or OA) should be able to even build a new rudder for a Kitfox.... Use the Dremel with the spin saw attachment. Draw out the shape of the door and cut slowly. I think I already mentioned to make nice curves at the corners to reduce the chance of cracking the cowl at the corners. Sand both the door and the edge of the hole. I like the piano hinge but you could just as easily use 4 - 6 Camlocs or Dzus fasteners and have the door completely removable. BTW if you hinge the door at the front air pressure will keep the door closed if the closure comes undone in flight. Michel: I like the idea of your inverted pyramid. I think you could use the through tubes in the frame for the tow bar. I agree 100% with it being easier to fold the wings with the tail up. It would also be easy to install a tow bar (for handling) on the lip of the inverted pyramid. As for taxiing with the wings folded ... Not on my plane! Tail up or down! Jee, some of you guys take the fun right out of everything. Then again, what would you do if this happens to you when you have no idea what would happen when it happens. But hay, I'm having fun, and I'm not doing it very fast, about walking speed, and there is snow everywhere, that's what we have now. I tried getting clearance for the sod, it has about 4 inches of snow, the tower called the appropriate people and they said no. Rats, I wanted to land in the snow so bad. At least I know what my airplane does in the snow. But then again I think most people stay home and watch tv. Those king fox tires are sure fun. -------- kitfoxmike model IV, 1200 speedster 912ul building RV7a slowbuild wings, fuse, finish kit "if you're not getting razzed from pilots or the FAA then you're not flying enough" Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=149457#149457

The slideing sideways post reminds me of a landing on a lake I made last sp ring. (northern MN) It was getting warm and all the snow was melted and the ice was wet and slippery. I landed next to an island, and as I was rol ling out past the island, a crosswind caught me and all of a sudden, there I was slideing sideways on those smooth Kingfox tires. Got my attention, b ut no damage done. Maybe if I had practiced it....... anyway, now the lake s are froze again and I can start landing on them again.
