In my very humble opinion:
I think it's about something called density altitude. On a warm day,
it's like flying higher, you'll need a longer take-off distance. Now,
we have a simple way to analyse this: Say, if you fly at 10,000 feet,
will your Kitfox:
1) Run at a higher RPM?
2) Have less sensitive controls?

Is that on wheels ? If so -- your float operations will be marginal at best.

I did not take notice in my Kitfox but I can tell you that when I took my old normally-aspirated
Arrow up to 14,000 feet one day (just barely!) the controls
were quite sluggish. The Turbo Arrow handles nicely up into the flight levels
but it has an entirely different wing, much larger control surfaces and the turbocharger
allows it to operate at more normal speeds (the old Arrow was just
holding altitude at Vy).
My Kitfox and both Arrows have adjustable pitch props, so I don't know what happens
to RPM.

Hi Pedro,
I have Full Lotus amphibs on my model 3 (empty weight 440 lbs). When
sitting on the amphib gear the front spreader bar bends about 1 to 1 1/2
inches in the center (Skystar supplied rigging). This would probably
not be a problem if EVERY wheel landing was perfect. I am not even
close to being that good of a pilot. I only use the wheels to move the
Kitfox around the ramp, and remove them once I get into the water. My
cruise is about the same as yours, about 70 mph.
We've had plenty of cold, but just got enough snow. Looking forward to
ski flying, the best there is.

Hi Frank,
I have a 582 in my model 3 with a 130 degree thermostat. When it is
warming up I'll see the temp gauge go up to about 140 and then back to
130. I'm assuming this is when the thermostat is opening. Once this
happens I simply go fly. I once tested the 'shock cooling' by
descending 6,000 feet (over a frozen lake for safety) at idle. The temp
never went below 130 and upon opening to full throttle there was no
hesitation.
As an aside my Skystar supplied cockpit heater keeps the interior about
30 degrees warmer than ambient temp. When it is below zero frost builds
up on the windscreen, so I generally don't fly at temps that low.
Perhaps a hotter thermostat would provide more cockpit heat.
Regards,
John Stoner

Thanks John for your input. There was no pretense at making the Kitfox air
tight and we all know that they leak like a sieve so any additional heat is
appreciated. I also have the small heater that I assume came from Kitfox and
it helps keep my feet warm.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that these two cycle engines should run
at 160 and not exceed 180 degrees but I may remember wrong. I do that
sometimes. If there is a different thermostats for them I have not been find
it. Thanks again.
Frank

Pedro ,
the point i was making was the performance you have with your vernier engine on
wheels might not be good enough to support your plane on floats.

Michel,
I heard he was practicing his IFR approaches. He probably needs to do that
because he has an old system and his loran is worthless now. While Rudolf is
current he has ear problems since that encounter with the 747 last winter.

The amphib gear I got from Full Lotus is conventional gear, that is
taildragger. I use the mounting points for the tail wheels to mount the
water rudders.

I have 582 that on initial startup runs up to 180 degrees and then
drops back to 140 and stays there. Are there other thermostats
available? Say, 160 or 180=92s. Would be nice in this cold weather!
