Standard thermostat will open about 135F- 140F so you will see you gauge go to
140 or so then once it opens it will drop back to 130f or so as the cold coolant
from rad starts to flow then the thermostat will close again till 140F again.
This cycle might happen a a few times until the engine can finally keep all
the coolant over 140F, this is what I wait for until full power is applied.
When flying and after a long decent with temps in the 130 or lower range, I would
be use less throttle until the engine temps get up to 140F or so again, full
throttle could bring on a "cold seizure" at this point.

Simplest solution is to cover up part of your Rad or design a shutter for it .
Normal operating temps should be 160 to 180F, over 1860 F is the caution area
and 200F is definitely a trouble zone. If you thermostat is opening at 180F could
it be sticking or a off brand that is doing this ? Sounds like it works
      ok though ?

The Blue head has the by pass on the engine and helps it keep warmer by being able
to circulate the water around the engine in a loop before the thermostat
opens. My Blue head is at 370 hours or so since June 2006 and never been open
yet. It could fly apart at anytime now , that is my disclaimer :)

Great Video archive Lowell. Spent most of the morning looking it over.
Bookmarked it for future reference. If others have not seen this it is

I thought I would share this with the group.Perhaps someone else could use it
also.I am a heavy pilot (230lbs) and as such I am always holding forward
stick at cruise. The flap reflux is not enough to overcome this so I decided to

come up with another method of trimming the pressure off. I did not want to cut

open the elevator to install an electric trim so I devised another method that

was similar to the one used in another experimental I owned(Nesmith Cougar)
I installed a small bracket on the floor to hold one end of a small bungee
(bracket held down by one of the radiator attach bolts going thru the floor
board) I then found an Adel clamp ,removed the rubber and lined the clamp with
      a
small piece of Teflon cowl tape (slick and will not scratch the stick) I
attached the clamp to the pilots control stick and used a wing nut and bolt to

tighten the clamp to the stick so that by adjusting the wingnut, I would have just

enough friction to barly slide it up and down the stick. The other end of the
small bungee(about 6 in long ) attaches to the Adel clamp. The idea here is as
you are flying along you reach down and move the clamp up the stick with your
fingers and the tension on the bungee increases until no forward pressure is
required and you fly hands off. On landing just move the clamp to the bottom of

the stick and pressure is gone.VERY SIMPLE and works perfectly.

      >From the engineering perspective, the increased effectivity of controls and reduced
rpm from a fixed pitch prop should be expected. Density altitude is the
pilot's term, while the engineers use a reference to standard day conditions.
Same thing, just different frames of reference. KitFoxMike and Michel are right,
      as usual.

With respect to flight controls, each simply changes the coefficient of lift for
the percentage of wing or tail surface that they are applicable to. In the
KF series, the flight controls apply to the whole wing and whole tail. So if you
think in terms of % change from standard day conditions for a given coefficient
of lift, it means that the wing or tail can generate more lift and drag.
Lift being a bigger number, we get a bigger benefit in it than in drag and the
airplane takes of quicker, climbs better, but cruises a bit slower.

Same applies to the engine and prop. The direct reason that your rpm has gone
down is that the prop is moving a thicker fluid (air) and that takes more energy.
But the engine is relatively inefficient at turning fuel and air into mechanical
power. You can re-jet or play with your mixture control, but the bigger
change is in the propeller side of the powerplant equation.

Oshkosh next year for a bunch of you? COOOOOL! Would love to see you

The more the merrier you know. Check out our website at

      already.

Oh yeah, here's a Christmas card for all my Kitfox pals here on the net.
(and now Gary can see how I've aged if he compares it against the photo

I might suggest looking into the Jabiru 3300. A few on the list have
flown or at least started this combo. At least I think they were
using a Series 5 or higher with their Jab 3300. I love my IV with a
2200 Jab. See the November 2007 issue of Sport Pilot, pages 20-25,
for some thoughts regarding engine choice.

      - To help with the rad temps, I use "Thermostat 3853799 Bombardier Evinrude Johnson",
in the fall and replace with the Rotax one in the spring. This thermostat
is 160F and I see temps of 160 - 170 regardless of what I do with the throttle.

      - Ensure the water temp is warm, I use about 130 before I rev over 3000. Ensure
that the thermostat is open and water circulating for a few minutes before high
      power operations.

      - I preheat the engine at all winter temps with an inline radiator heater. I got
mine for $20. specifically for Ski Doo. ( any 1" hose one will do). I set it
on a timer the night before I fly. Amazing what a difference an hour or 2 of
heat will do. Starting water temp 80-100F. It starts and idles better at 20F after
heating than in the summer. ( tells me I must have the summer idle too rich?)

      Dick,

That sound like a great system. I always thought that the reflex makes the nose
come up, and lowering flaps a few degrees brought the nose down?
