Hey Gang,
I just put up a short video of a friends Super lightweight Rotax 2 stroke
powered Avid Flyer on floats doing a takeoff competition. Shows just what a
light airplane can do. I dubbed it from another friends ancient and crude
VHS video, but I thought you guys might enjoy it just the same. Here's the
link...

Mike answers that at 14,000 ft his controls feel sluggish. Maybe he was
suffering from hypoxia? :-)
Seriously, I don't know. I understand Bob's arguments about
coefficients of lift and drag but ... as we talked about fluttering and
Vne at altitude ... maybe there is something there?
Incidentally, the X-Plane flight simulator gives not two but three
coefficients for all airfoils: Lift, drag and moment. The latter is the
force that 'twists' an airfoil. Symmetrical airfoils have no moment,
asymmetrical have a negative moment for positive AoA and vice-versa.
E.g. a 'negative moment' for a wing means a pitch down effect.
Are we getting any closer? I don't know but my wife says it's time for
me to get dressed up as we'll be spending Christmas eve at our son's
house together with our grand-daughter.
Have a very nice Christmas, everyone!

How about an 80 HP AeroVee? The Sonex uses that engine and it seems to be
well proven for aircraft. The cost new is only $ 6500. Not sure the
installed weight vs a 912 but the engine itself with electric starter and
alternator (less the exhaust and oil) is only 158 LBS. The spec on the
912 is 125 LBS. From the Lycoming internet site I get the 0-235 weight at
243 IBS. That in my opinion is simply too much weight up front for a
Kitfox. The plane will not handle as it was intended. You see the odd
0-200 Powered Kitfox (that engine is about 200 LBS), but I think the
weight is the factor with the 235 series.
Anyone ever hear of an AeroVee in a Kitox?

would rather have a 4 stroke without a gear reduction.

Bunk. Should have been "bunch" of seaplane guys. No matter how many
times I visually spell check these posts I always seem to mess something
up. Sigh.
So far we have one Kitfox on anphibs, a very old cub on straight floats,
Stinson 108 on straight floats, Murphy Rebel on anphibs. Will probably
have some additions and substractions by the time Oshkosh rolls around.
Thanks for the Christmas Photo Paul. That left front nose wheel looks
familiar. :-)

Hey Gary, that was me back when I was in my 20's.....geez, how time flies!
Oshkosh next year for a bunch of you? COOOOOL! Would love to see you
guys show up at the seaplane base! And yes, I'd be happy to buy a beer.
The more the merrier you know. Check out our website at
www.oshkoshseaplanebase.com for more info and pics if you haven't already.
Oh yeah, here's a Christmas card for all my Kitfox pals here on the net.
(and now Gary can see how I've aged if he compares it against the photo in
the earlier post) Smile :-)
Merry Christmas everyone!

Larry,
You are absolutely right! A few degrees of down flap would make the nose go
down. I was going by what the former owner told me that he was doing. At
least by having min drag by not using the flaps and using the bungee trim instead,
I have gained a few mph in cruise.(also my flap lever lies straight on the
floor and is hard to get to for my short arms) Oh well, thanks for pointing that
out.
You guys have a Merry Christmas! I am down in the Pensacola, Fl. area and
all this talk about skis and snow reminds me of when I used to live in
Colorado. This place sucks in the summer but is nice this time of year. I can
fly
pretty much every day.

No coolant or radiator. That 125 lbs for the 912 was right from the spec
sheet. Add the exhaust and oil and it is going to be at least as heavy as
the Jab if not more.

Gary, Thanks for the reply. The 0-235 is just too heavy for the mod III kit
fox from what I gather. I have a good 100 hr 582 Rotax firewall forward, so
that will be the engine I use. It's the size engine the plane was original
ly designed for.

Subject: | Engine choices - was kitfox III 0-235 |
Has anyone done a comparative analysis of power, weight and cost (both up-front
and operational) for those engines we commonly install in our Kitfoxes? This
would not only help builders decide initially but also those of us facing the
expensive prospect of overhauling 582's as they approach their very short TBO's.
Michel, you're an analytical sort and I know you went through this a few years
back, deciding on the Jab 2200. Can you tell us how you reached your decision?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the entire Kitfox community.
