Lyle
One thing to check when you get your new tubes is what is causing the
problem. Most people in the UK run their tyres tube less but I and a
friend ran with tubes. Despite positively checking that the tyres never
moved on the rim tubes still seemed to occasionally fail.
What seems to happen is that at the low pressures of 8 psi or so, over a
long period of time the tubes worked themselves round inside the tyre.
Hard to believe but true.
The remedy was simple about 4 times a year I took the valve from the
tyre and with it completely deflated gave the tyre a massage.
Sometimes as the tube deflated I could here the tube reposition.

Well yesterday was the day. After 5 years (812 hours of build time) N474DP flew
for the first time. Everything went great.
I want to thank everyone on this list for all the great advise I was able to glean
from reading your posts. Also the superlative help of John and Debra McBean,
Norm Williams, and many others made it possible for me to successfully build
my first airplane.

along with a 2 inch airspeed and replacing my3 1/4airspeed and 2 inch ball.(I
have limited space on my panel.) It looks like you would get the "most bang
for the buck" with this unit.Spruce lists a Tru Trak ADI with or without the
GPS(about $15 diff).I have a Garmin 396 How does the Tru Trak tie in with the GPS
to give you heading ?

Dick, I replaced my standard Kitfox ball with the TruTrak "Pictoral Turn & Bank"
and it fits the 2 1/4 " hole perfectly.

Hi Dick. It works great. I'd been looking for an RC Allen electric AH,
but they're very expensive for an electric unit and their track record
has a pretty bad reputation for reliability. There's also the Chinese
knockoff (Falcon?) that is a couple hundred cheaper, but from what I
could glean, it's reliability record is even worse. TruTrak has no gyro
so moving parts are almost zero in it. You can buy the T/B or A/H. The
A/H isn't a heck of a lot more and you get a better bang for your buck.
I think the warranty was 5 years IIRC. It fits a standard 3.125 panel
cutout. I can't remember how the interface wiring went that provides
ground track, but it comes with the instructions. My advice would be to
buy the optional GPS receiver and avoid all the interfacing and extra
wiring. It's very small and sits on top of your glare shield. The
receiver simply plugs into the back of the ADI. That way, if you
upgrade your Garmin, there would be no effect on the interfacing.

Reading the letter from Paul Seehafer, I'd like to add that I'm the one who wrote
the UPI story about the Avid Flyer in 1983, and the hostility Dan showed toward
Dean was evident even at that time.
When the story was sent out on the wires and ran worldwide, Dan was angry that
all of the quotes in the story were from Dean. I asked him how I could have quoted
him when he wouldn't even talk with me.
He did call me when he introduced the Kitfox, but I was no longer at the wire service
at that time, so that story had much less coverage.

OK... This seems like a good time to release the First Flight Lapel (Hat)
Pin....
Here's the deal.. We have made a set KITFOX FIRST FLIGHT WINGS.. It is only
available for those that are the builder/owner of the aircraft at the time
of the First Flight. It is truly a moment to be proud of !
What we are asking for is to fill out information that we can submit to EAA,
Kitplanes and put up on our web. It also gives us a chance to identify
those that do not mind being referrals for us.
Hopefully we'll have the info up on the web shortly... but in the mean time
here is the PDF.
Did your first flight 5 years ago.. send in the info.. This is not just for
the future first flights...

I have a Kitfox 4-1200 and need to change the landing gear bungees. I have
done this before on my Piper Pacer and it was quite a job so before I experiment
on my new Kitfox ,I thought perhaps some of the members of this forum might
have a good way to do it.I have thought of lifting the aircraft by the engine
mounts or pulling the gear together with a "come a long" and building a wooden
cradle to hold the gear together (using 2 x 4's running along th outside of
each wheel and connecting at the front and back of the gear-a rectangle shape
which is the way I replaced the Hydrosorbs on the Pacer) Any ideas ?

Have 1 person under the plane and 1 on top. Make 1 wrap at a time and have
the person on the bottom hold and pull bungees tight as possible and the
person on top use plastic tie wraps to hold the bungees tension. Continue
untill the bungee is complete with the proper # of wraps and then cut the
plastic ties and you are finished. Plastic ties will allow you to not lose
your tension on each wrap. You should have 4 or 5 ties to cut when

Mike has it down pat, its a two person job and I find it easiest to hoist the plane
via the engine mt just enough to let the gear come together, the 2x4 cradle
would be tough as one person has to be under the plane and the cradle would
be very uncomfortable. I tried a come along but again it was in the way. Its
not the easiest job. While some like the Grove gear I prefer the bungee gear
its lighter has more ht/prop clearance and lots less money, just MHO.

Dick.I have a KF2,this summer I changed my bungees.was not easy.there
were two of us.one on top and 1 on bottom.alot of cussing and pinched
fingers but got it done.I used a tool that I made.it had a handle,and a
small hook at one end.I used this to help pull and to help streach the
bungiees,by pulling them down.to help streach them in to place.it made
it lot easy to do.we had them changed in app.1hr. Steve Shinabery

When I changed the bungee on my classic 4 I took the turtle deck off and
after putting as many loops in it as I could by hand, hooked a ratcheting
tie down to the end of the bungee and the other end to the hanger truss.
Then I had 1 person on top ratchet the strap in as I worked it from the
bottom with a hook. That way the strap kept the tension on the bungee while
I slowly tightened up the rest of the loops 1 at a time when I had enough
hanging out I clamped it and made the last loop then hooked the strap back
up and continued working it until I was able to hook it on the post. Took
about an hour and a half for both.

fingers but got it done.I used a tool that I made.it had a handle,and a
small hook at one end.I used this to help pull and to help streach the
bungiees,by pulling them down.to help streach them in to place.it made

What we are asking for is to fill out information that we can submit to EAA,
Kitplanes and put up on our web. It also gives us a chance to identify
those that do not mind being referrals for us.
Hopefully we'll have the info up on the web shortly... but in the mean time
here is the PDF.

Dick, this is one of those jobs that is easy if you know how to do it. The only
way to learn how to do it is to try the suggestions offered here and see what
works for you. There are quite a few ways but the key is to not lose the tension
you gain on each wrap while you make the next one.
The best method for me is to pad the jaws of a large pair of water pump pliers
with tape, support the wheels off the floor by placing a saw horse under the front
of the fuselage, pulling each wrap tight as I can and holding it with the
pliers while I make the next wrap. First installation took me two days and all
my best swear words. Second replacement took about 15 minutes...I knew how
that time. My wife couldn't believe I could do it by myself! I'm an old skinny
guy.

Tom is correct, It can be done pretty easy following the his
suggestions. I have changed the bungees 3 times on my Model II and each
time I did it alone. Make sure the gear legs are tight against the
bottom of the fuselage and getter done. Its that simple.

Dick,the tool that I made ,with the hook..I too used it to pull each
loop down to streach and to make it longer to do the next loop.and to
adjust the bungees evenly after the bungees were in place.I did tie the
tail down.and raised each landing gear one side at a time.may B it would
B better to raise plane on to saw horses.any way this worked 4 me..Steve

I've put new bungees on my Avids and I didn't try to do it alone. My hat i
s off to anyone that can do it by themself. Steve winder from Avid/Airdale
recomended deviding up the total length of the bungee by the number of wra
ps you need and makeing marks with a magic marker on the bungee where each
wrap would be if the tension was the same on all wraps. I'll try to say th
at a different way. Just suppose the bungee was 90" long and you need 6 wr
aps. Devide 90" by 6 and you get 15". Make a mark every 15" on the bungee
. Hook the bungee, wrap it around and pull it untill the mark is on the
top of the carrythrough. Hold it and wrap it again and again bring it up t
o the mark. Continue on till all 6 wraps are on and hook the other end on
the other hook. All of the marks you made should now be on top. Now you h
ave equal tension on all the wraps. I used a ratchet strap to hold the gea
r togeather when I took off the old bungee, if you are the guy on the grou
nd, you can lay your head or neck on the strap with no problem. Hopefully
