    Subject: Console covering
When I built my S5 (1st flight May 2000) I chose to cover the console top side with Cordura fabric to match the seats. My biggest reason for using fabric was to cover up all of the rivets that would have been visible had I painted it. I used spray on 3M adhesive and it held up for about three years and since then it has gradually worked loose and looked unsightly so I removed it. Now I need to recover with something. What have some of you used to cover your console that has lasted? I'm just looking for alternatives to what I've already tried and didn't work very well. Vinyl contact paper was suggested, but I don't know where to find something suitable and of course, color would be a limiting factor. Any suggestions out there? Thanks, Deke Morisse Mikado Michigan S5/Subaru/CAP 355+ TT "The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress." - Joseph Joubert

Found an interesting web that describes how to set up the Harbor Freight's current HVLP spray gun # 43430. Harbor Freight has them on sale for $40.00 in the store price but go to their WEB site and buy it for $20.00. Even if you don't like it, for 20 bucks you can always paint the patio furniture with it. No, I have not tried it but I ordered one. http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/HVLPspraygun.html George

You might be referring to the arm that Dave Jalanti engineered for his Jabiru installation in his Kitfox. If so, I got mine from Pete at USJabiru ( www.usjabiru.com or email them at info@usjabiru.com ) in Tennessee, a Jabiru dealer. This arm extends the length of the VERY short Bing throttle arm, and thus allows for a more precise control of the throttle. I have the 43430 which I used to paint a rocket back in July... in Phoenix... 110F-115F... I was using a krylon water based paint recommended by a buddy of mine. The gun worked flawlessly, but the paint was almost dry by the time it hit the airframe. I went through 2 qts of primer, and one coat of white. (Rocket is 16" Diameter and 11ft long.) I was pretty happy with the gun, but I'm also an amateur and supposed I wouldn't know a great gun from a so-so gun. I'll be using it again in the next couple of months with 'normal' temperatures... 80's to 90's... relatively low humidity and we'll see how it goes. Ron Vic Baker wrote: > Harbor Freight HVLP? Deke, I got my carpet for my mod.II at Home depot. I believe it was called "fish and ski" for boats. Although it is very thin backed it is quite tough. The thin backing and very low pile makes bends easily. I got mine in black, although I don't know if other colors are available. The one pitfall I do recall however is the fact that they only sell it by the roll length yard. Meaning, narrowest available would be 3 ft.x the length of the roll(10ft.?). Hope this helps. Greg G. Subject: 912S oil temp
    From: "lazflyn" <markdj57@hotmail.com>
Hello, I just bought a Series 5. I am experiencing oil temps that are too high. This happens at high power settings (above 5000 rpm) in level cruise. It's winter time and that really concerns me. What can be done to help cool the oil better, especially when summer rolls around and it is really needing to be cooled. The oil cooler is mounted below the front of the engine, with a dedicated scoop for it. Is there not enough air exiting the rear of the cowl? Not enough flow through the radiator and side exits of the firewall? Air bubbles in my oil? Please help me understand the possibilities, I am new to aircraft ownership. The builder said I should mount the oil cooler on top of the radiator to help. Do you think that would help? Thanks in advance. Good point Michel. I've always wondered why they mount those things backward. I thought the same thing about sailboats too. Seems the pointy end should be facing aft. Thanks John. I didn't receive any extra carpet with my kit, but I might be able to find something suitable in a fabric shop. I'm thinking that when I first applied the adhesive, I didn't get enough on the fabric to make a good bond. Deke, Something a little different to ponder, I primed my glare shield and then shot it with Fleck paint to give it a textured finish then shot it with a satin black paint, the textured finish helps on glare and also hides any imperfections in the glass. I setup my shield so it intersects the bars in the center of the windscreen where they come together so all that was needed was a slot in the glare shield to install. Leading edge will receive a rubber edge molding. Great glare reduction, min weight, slot behind the bars can be covered with a velcro installed patch. Lloyd C Upper Mi. Mod 5-912ul Rebuild

Inspect the oil line from the oil cooler to the oil pump. It is very short and does an immediate bend. If the bend is a bit much it cuts the oil supply some and gives you high pressure readings. It could also affect oil temps. At least worth a look. On a car they're trying to make it look sleek, of course, but they also have to kill lift as best they can or the top will rip right off, or the whole thing will rip off the car. I suspect you'd have the same problem on the Kitfox and would want to mount it the way it's mounted on the car. The latches aren't really designed to take much load and you'd have to come up with a different closure to mount it upside down. Do you think that would help? Some assistance may be found in the archives: http://www.matronics.com/searching/ws_script_short.cgi. Select "Kitfox" under "Select Archive" and search for "high oil temp" and you'll get a bunch of hits. This has been a common problem with Series 5's. (One of my flying compatriots replaced his stock 5 oil cooler with one 50% bigger and ducted from the inlet to the cooler. His heat problems diminished, but the darn thing keeps falling off! Lousy bracket designs.) Guy Buchanan San Diego, CA K-IV 1200 / 582-C / Warp / 100% done, thanks mostly to Bob Ducar.
