Subject: | Re: Rotax 912 pnuematic carb sync |
The "throttle bug" is made by Lowell Fitt @ _Highwingllc.com _
(highwingllc.com) (208-455-5059.) It sells for $38.50 and replaces the "bug" nut
at the end
of the throttle bell crank. on the Kitfox.I think not all Kitfox's have the
bellcrank so it wouldn't work on all.
For the pneumatic sync, I just tied my tail down, chocked the plane, removed
the front and top cowling and attached the Twin Max hoses to the left carb
and the balance tube going to the right carb.I had previously done the
mechanical sync per Rotax SB so I knew the idle was in the ball park (in fact it
turned out to be right on) I then read the instructions for the twin max. It only
has one needle so all you do is center the needle with a knob and start the
engine. At 1800 rpm I turned the knob on the "throttle bug" which I had
previously attached to the back side of the left throttle cable at the bellcrank.
I
could easily reach it with my right hand in the cockpit and my left holding the
Twin Max. All I did was turn the knob on the Throttle bug so that the needle on
the Twin max (which was deflected on the out of sync carb) centered up, and I
was done! It took much longer to right about it (once I was set up) then to
do it. There was no wiggling twin needles or multiple shutdowns to readjust the
cable length. The throttle bug moves the cable about 1/8 inch or so and you
can do it from the cockpit. The setting stays right were you put it and wont
move. The next time you need to adjust the sync its jus a matter of tweaking the
adjustment knob. I don' know how it could get any easier.
Lowell has a couple of other neat items on his site that I purchased and
installed. He sells shutter kits for the radiator and oil coolers. I got tired
of the tape for winter time so now I can regulate both temps from push/pull
controls in my cockpit. They work well.

Larry,
My jetting is the same as your except for a 2.74 with the needle in the
fourth slot. I tried a 40 idle jet and couldn't keep the engine running at
idle so went back to 45. My arrangement produces an ok idle at about 2000
when the temps are in the 20s or lower. In flight I'm getting about 1100 at
these OATs. Since I'm using the cheap analog EGT gauges I really have no
clear idea what the temps are other than I hope I'm seeing something within
100 degrees of what really is (the plugs look good). I'm operating from OWK
in Maine which is 270 msl. I end up having to change main, needle clip, and
needle jet each major season change (not to mention the inevitable prop
pitch change) and I find it a real pain. There are some two-stroke people
here who don't change anything ever and seem to do fine. So I'm hoping that
when I install a 912S this summer at least this sort of problem will go away
(to be replaced with problems as yet unknown, I suppose).

For the past few years I have only used the cheap (inexpensive) Harbor
Freight paint guns. I recently sprayed my Super Sport with it and have spra
yed a couple of Lancair IV-P's, an RV-7, a Titan T-51, a Glastar and whatev
er else comes into my shop. I spent several years as a painter at the Kenwo
rth truck company in Seattle where I sprayed more than 7000 trucks. We only
used DeVilbiss paint guns there, spraying enamels, urethanes and base/clea
rs. So for years after that I thought I had to have the best guns on the ma
rket which would easily cost me $300.00 - $500.00 a gun.
So since all spray guns work primarily the same way, I started using th
e cheaper guns both in the HVLP and regular. I didn't notice much or any di
fference at all and at their cheap price tag, I consider them disposable. I
prefer using the non HVLP guns for finish paint as they atomize the paint
into smaller droplets creating a smoother initial paint finish. Although th
ey do not have as good of transfer efficiency as the HVLP, meaning they req
uire more atomizing air preasure which creates more overspray that is blast

I did use the HVLP gun for spraying the poly brush and poly spray. Tha

I have seen the HVLP guns at Menards , Home Depot and Lowes They aren't too
expensive and seem to work well . Also as I have been it the auto body biz
for quite a few years and find that the regular guns work better for the
aerothane. The automotive base coat clear coat sprays a lot different than
the polyurethane does at least in my experience . for the auto paint I use a
Sata Jet gun which cost me about 500 and it did not spray the urethane very
well as I had to jack up the pressure as to atomize the paint.. This is just
my experience and yours will differ .. be sure to practice on something
before you start on the actual project. good luck.

I own a good half dozen paint guns, including a turbine based HVLP, and
an el-cheapo Harbor Freight. As far as I'm concerned every single one
will produce a high quality paint job WITH aerothane. The trick is in
adjusting the pressure, flow rate, fan pattern, and thinning the paint.
My personal favorite paint gun is a automotive no-name touchup gun
that I modified to use baby formula bottle's. It's a tad small for wing
size surface, but works great for smaller paint jobs. Keep in mind, that
carrying around a quart of paint, with an attached 5/8" air line can
make your arm ache after a bit ...
HVLP systems are overrated, they blow a hell of a lot of paint into the air
just like any other paint gun so you don't save that much paint. They have
a big bulky airline, etc.
There is simply no magic to painting, it is 100% the trigger puller that
makes the paint job. If you buy a cheap HB and practice you will do
just fine.
Contrarily you can buy an expensive turbine and make puddles on the
floor. :)
Oh one more thing, the HB Hvlp is really NOT an Hvlp, but rather a gravity
feed paint gun. It is exactly the same as a suction gun, just the paint
drains into the gun rather than being sucked up a pickup tube.
On the other hand you might want something to pump air into the mask
since breathing aerothane isn't a good idea ...
Regards,
Jeff

That was me. Since I've never had an engine out or practiced
by killing the engine I don't really know what will happen when the
engine dies. I suppose it depends on whether I seize the engine, or
run out of fuel, or loose an ignition module, or foul a plug. Other
than the engine-out drag and the fact that it eventually wears out,
(I don't know when,) I've found no problems.
Descent is Cessna-normal, unless you slow down so much that
the prop disengages. Then the engine will drop to idle, (1500,) and
the prop will windmill. The only way to do this is to slow to near stall speed.
I really like having it. Starts are instantaneous and
reliable, indeed if I sit for any length of time waiting for
clearance I shut down the engine. It engages readily, but you have to
be at about 2800 for full engagement. Between 2400 and 2800 it slips.
If you want to taxi slow you have to use brakes, or go back and forth
between idle and 2800.

I'm on the home stretch with the panel layout in my Classic IV. Nothing fancy
but pretty to look at. A second hand Lowrance GPS will sit in the center with
a new, low end ICOM radio on top. The remaining round hole will likely hold
an intercom unit. Most of the wiring runs through a 16 pin connector so panel
R and R won't be a chore.

The clutch will not drive the engine anymore than direct gears. The only draw
back, is the fact that you cant stop the prop from wind milling in the case of
an engine out, and if you battery is dead you cant prop it. Other than that
there are NO drawbacks, only benefits IMO

Good looking panel, Gary; however, I suggest some changes in instrument
positions. You'll most likely find that you will want certain flight and engine
instruments within your immediate view, especially during takeoff and landing.
I suggest you move your clock to where the tach is now (you don't really
need to refer to the clock very often); place the tach where the ball is now (so
you can easily see it without moving your head away from your immediate view
outside the cockpit); and place the ball where the clock is now. I have mine
set up similarly to what I am suggesting, and after almost 1300 hours find

Keep up the good work!

I cannot take credit for the layout, but I find it quite functional.
The throttle was put on the left as the builder was ex-military and I guess he
