I didn't install mine so I'm not sure how hard it is. But mine were
installed through the side of the tank at the root end. They bend upward in
about a 1" radius for 45 deg and then a 90 deg turn down do the the probe
travels to the bottom of the tank at a 45 deg slant. They are sealed with
Hylomar and don't leak.

Hi,
Given the properties below, would you think that this would be an
effective barrier/sealant to apply to the inside of a fiberglass tank

Thanks for your experience.

Subject: | capacitance fuel probes |
We've just completed the installation of capacitance probes on a pair of
RV4 tanks. The installation should be similar for the Kitfox with the
probe mounted on the side of the tank. Because of the dihedral in the
wing of the RV4 we bent the tube down at root and up at the end of the
tube. We used o-rings under the hold down bolts with a countersink cut
in the plastic top of the probe. Red Loctite sealant was applied to the
gaskets and the hold down bolts. To test the integrity of the tank, we
sealed all of the openings and used a balloon over the fuel outlet. We
then applied enough air pressure to expand the balloon and let it sit
for 24 hours. The balloon should remain expanded otherwise there is a
leak which must be repaired. Hope this helps.

LOL! I wondered about that when I was testing. Needless to
say I didn't push it. However I don't think there's any worry. The
prop will always spin faster pulling than pushing, since slippage
works against you both ways. (Meaning, it slips when generating
thrust, and slips worse when being thrust because of the lousy airfoil.)

Maybe you can do the math for RPM, pitch and speed to get an idea of RPMs with
the slippage being a safety factor. Pitch = distance traveled through the air
in one revolution.

Low-power descents are where Lowell's rad shutters save the day. Adjust the shutters
as needed to keep temps above 140 degrees. They work like a charm. They
also help get the temps up faster on the ground. An easy, inexpensive mod that
I highly recommend, whether or not you have the RK400 installed.

John Alexander <alexandj@preachain.org> wrote:
This certainly makes sense, since the RK-400 clutch is set to disengage at
about 2500 rpm. I'm guessing that with older ones, the springs that hold the
slipper shoes back at low rpm get tired and so engage and disengage at lower rpm.
But yes, as long as the engine rpm is below the engagement rpm for the clutch,
the prop will go to town - spinning freely.
Please do take note of my aside on warming the engine with the clutch
installed. I repair more than a few cold seizured engines every year. This
is something that is completely avoidable, but becomes something to always
keep in mind when using the RK-400 clutch, since the engine can operate at
very low rpm and load factors. Long, low power descents followed by a
go-around is where you will get bit here.

OK, if it is a 582 and complete, whether a B or C box, it's definitely
a "grab it now" deal for someone. Just enough left to do to be familiar

think I saw a set of wings hanging on the wall. Please give us a report

John,
I have installed a lot of the capacitance fuel probes in other
planes. Most of those probes can be cut down in length to fit your
application. You could to run it at an angle, like from the outboard top
of the tank to the inboard bottom. This angle would allow a longer probe
and be more accurate. A threaded boss could be glassed into the tank and
the probe threads into that but you would have to have a way to remove
the probe after the wing is finished, for maintanence. Although it would
be cool to do that and I thought about it myself since I installed a
Dynon D-180 but I just went with the sight guages. It is not hard to do
if you have some fiberglass experience.

Subject: | Re: Info found on HVLP gun setup! |
The only difference that I see in the H.F. HVLP and regular is that
the HVLP has a larger fluid tip to allow more liquid to flow and the
aircap doesn't atomize the paint as well. They are both gravity feed
guns which to me is the only way to go. I sprayed Aerothane on my plane
and I found it incredibly easy to spray. I did add a little more reducer
than called for, seemed to atomize a little better. My first coat was a
light tack coat followed by a full wet cross coat and then one more
cross coat that was very wet.
As someone mentioned ealier, it is very important to spray a test
pattern before each coat. I do it on a cardboard box that I have sitting
next to my paint job. I normally spray with the trigger wide open and
control the amount of paint going onto the surface by the speed of my
arm, always maintaining a consistant speed, distance from the painted
surface and always have the gun 90 degrees to the surface the entire
time the trigger is pulled. Also, start spraying a few inchs away from
the part as you begin moving the gun toward the part to paint. You never
want to start pulling the trigger with the gun pointed at the part.
The more lights you can have the better. You have to see the painted
surface in the reflection of the light to see how wet or dry the paint
application is. I usually run about 60-65 PSI at the regulator which is
at the other end of my 50 foot hose, the pressure will drop a little
before it gets to the gun.
