Don't feel too bad Lynn.
When I was a kid I flew all over Newfoundland with my father in a C170B on
floats. Most of the time we were salmon fishing and the old bird, CF-HIM,
was half decent at getting us in (and out) of some nice ponds, close to the
type of pools that dreams are made of. Of course we took everything we
needed to survive for about fifty years (exaggeration...maybe) The running
joke around the hangar is the normal takeoff weight for our plane was about
a hundred pounds or so overweight. For years I thought it was normal to
have the last compartment of both floats submerged when slow taxiing.

Do you suppose that John McBean still sells the double-pin door latch
kits? I've got 'em on my Speedster, plus the bottom latch...three
points of contact with the door jambs, and the double-pins are almost
foolproof. I doubt that the door would EVER come open short of
wadding up the fuselage.
Also, I've had a 250-pounder in my plane with full tanks (156 lbs),
and at that point we were about 15 lbs over gross...did I just admit
to a violation of the rules? Damn, somebody must be sneaking in here
again and playing with my computer.

When I was in the Stinson I was thinking about a bubble door with enough
room to get my elbow into the bubble. J BTW the same plane with a stick
would have had thousands of room. It was just that the yoke takes up so
much room and was close to the door. The guy who owned the plane is around
5'6" and when he flared he had to wrap his arm around the yoke to give
himself enough room to pull it fully back. I'm 5'11" with 39" arms... 30"
legs... should have made a good football player... low CG J.
I was in the right seat and I'm left handed... using the yoke left handed
wasn't a problem except I couldn't handle the yoke and throttle at the same
time. The next plane I flew was a Super Cub... Loved it... Much like the
Kitfox with a growl. It did take a bit of getting used to using the stick
with my right (wrong) hand. By the third landing I had it down pretty well.
One of the amazing things about the Super Cub is the amount of space in the
cockpit. The left seat in a 737 has much less room and is actually harder
to get in and out of.

Just wondering why you say to take the doors off.. I have been in my plane
(Model III-A actual Mod II) with myself at close to 250 and another pilot at
close to 200 lb. We didn't fly because we just couldn't develop enough
horsepower ( faulty tach) to get up on step. The With the fuel on board we
were around 1050 lb. Which I would probably have done some flight in ground
effect. What I'm trying to get at is there was plenty of room with the
doors on and both sticks installed. In fact there was more room than in the
Stinson 108 I tried to fly.... The yoke in that plane was situated in such
a way it would require me to take the door off to give me enough elbow room.
The most room I've seen in any plane including the Boeing 737 was the Super
Cub.

I have a friend coming to visit who is an aviation enthusiast and we're
talking about my giving him a ride in my IV-1200. The kicker is that he's
5'10" and admits to weighing 260. This would be the biggest/heaviest
passenger I've carried by at least 50 pounds and wonder if anyone has had a
similar experience. We would definitely not be over-gross but I wonder
about seat integrity and control freedom.

Here are two shots that I have, Pat. The kit that I had required
several parts to be made from stock that was furnished. Instructions
came with the kit as supplied in 1994.
Above: This is the bellcrank that transmits the center, turning
motion into fore-and-aft rods that engage pins into sockets in the
fuselage.
Above: On the left is the fuselage socket (fastened with 4 SS
rivets), with the pin engaged, and on the right is the guide
(fastened with 5 SS rivets)
and the actuating rod. I hope this makes sense. It's hard to get the
overall picture of how it works because I zoomed in a little too
close when I shot it.

Not to be a critic, but riveting into the airframe tubing isn't really a good

There is no spring mechanism. When you turn the handle, either inside
or outside, the two rods are either moved outward or inward, and
obviously make the pins either enter or exit the sockets in the
fuselage. When in the engaged position, there is a "ball detent" that
retains the rods/pins in that position. I think that the friction of
the pins in their sockets helps too.
I think I recall hearing that some of the Kitfox doors did not have
the parallel tubes about mid-height that is required for the
attachment of the control mechanism. Maybe someone with a different
model than my IV can shed some light on this. I just looked for the
instructions that came with my kit, but they must be at the hangar.

I'm pretty sure that it was an accessory, and maybe for most
applications the latch at the bottom of the door was sufficient. It
seems like this double-pin thing was for the Speedster, but I can't
remember without seeing the instructions. I also recall reading that
the Speedster fuselage came with the mounting tabs already welded in
place...mine did. I may not have the history correct as to whether or
not which model had what, so maybe someone closer to the factory or
to the whole history can shed some light.

Yes, the tab was there, but the supplied socket-mounting tab already
had the holes drilled in it and that's where they lined up, requiring
drilling into the airframe tubing...not my idea, just following
directions. No amount of my re-positioning it would change this.

Lynn, OK got it, ball detents on the pins. My doors have only 1 mid door ro
d. I could fabricate something myself if I have to but I just redid my door
s to fit the wide body cabin modification. I wish I would have seen your
latch pictures sooner. Oh well, such is life.

I built a set after looking at pictures and drawings of other folks'
skis. Michel over in Norway sent pics of his, and John Perry, and
Dave in Canada helped as well. I just borrowed the best of all the
ideas and went with that. I think that the pics John sent me were of
skis built for an Avid. Here's mine:
Above: Here's the skis as built
This is just after adding a brace to the tip. I had an encounter with
a frozen snowbank that dictated adding this brace. The "encounter"
bent the skis up just in front of the original diagonal braces, and
actually made the skis slope up more, and I liked that, so I added
this new brace to insure that the shape didn't change when the next
encounter occurs....and it probably will. : ) Of course I cleaned up
the overspray after the painting was done, and re-riveted the shoe to
the ski.

I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase, but this
subject has been exhaustively discussed on the Lancair
(www.lancair.net/maillist.html) and RV (www.vansairforce.net) forums,
as they both use every possible permutation of landing light and
position lights. You'll find much more and more current information
there. As the tips for all three aircraft are glass, and are about
the same shapes you should find good information.

I have a Model IV 1200, and on my plane, the landing lights and I have two
are mounted at the end of the wingtip, the actual wingtip fits over the lig
ht. The light is mounted to a bracket that is mounted to the spar. Your w
ingtip will have a plastic lense.

Has anyone been successful in mounting landing lights in the wingtips? If
so, can you give me some information on this or any recommendations. If no
t in the wingtips, then where would a practical place be? Any light weight
lights?
