... hum, Guy, I understood your comments as a joke, of course. Because I am NEVER
flying at or near Vne if it isn't only a fraction of a second, when I test
my max RPM at WOT; usually when levelling after initial climb.
If anyone got the impression that I do, it is then my turn to apologize.
In fact, I do exactly the opposite; I always fly at a very safe speed, away from
Vne and Vso. A year ago I flew to Germany and back in formation with a Skyranger
with a Rotax 912. At two occasions, I had to ask my wing mate to slow down.
Since he lives and fly from the same place where the Scandinavian Jabiru dealer
lives, later on I got a phone call from him asking if really my Kitfox with Jabiru
was flying so much slower than the Skyranger (pretty similar type of aircraft
as the Kitfox) with a Rotax 912.
To what I had to answer: "Of course, not! I could have kept the same speed as he
did but I wanted to fly slower because it was typical summer sunshine thermic
turbulence. especially along the Swedish coast with an onshore breeze; you know,
when mild and wet air comes from the sea and rises over land to form nice
cumulus.
The thing is; I don't like to fly seeing the ASI needle moving up and down near
Vne. Once I had to pull the throttle to idle in order to stay under Vne and at
the same altitude. It was funny; flying forward with the nose down. But, flying
in controlled airspace, with a light aircraft in thermic cells, it's the only
way to do it.
Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

No the 1/4" is not the right one. you can get the 5/16"s one for a 5$ or so.
Use a urethane line on it as well. And you don't have to cut it open to see what
is inside as you can look into the end of it once off and see and debris on
the screen. It is just a plastic housing with a screen inside. I would continue
to change them annually.

Yes my 582 will take off the same or less. I find it very comical to read about
the splitting of hairs on deciding what colour of paint is the lightest.
How about talking why you cannot take off in 150 feet? LOL [Shocked] [Shocked]

Clint you are so right and the titanium dioxide is a great UV barrier/reflector.
that is what is used in latex paint as well. It works for UV blocker on fabric
yes.
For argument;s sake on weight of different colours of paint , a more than need
complex weight of a door latch on both doors will by far out weigh the colour
you choose to paint a airplane.
Let's forget about the what if's and let talk about some real down to earth flying.

Where did you get that info?
I would bet that a faired IV with a 914 will see 140 to 150 mph + at over
FL180 to the low FL200s.
a IV with a 912 UL will see mid 120s or better at low altitude.
I think Paul Seehafer's Amphib 912UL sees close to 110 to 120 WOT
My little 582 IV cruises with big wheels in the low 90s and WOT 102 to 104 now.
and a hellva alot of fun factor.
Fun Factor is greater on skis with alot more accessible terrain now. :)

Guys,
Lurking among these recent posts, I have decided to NOT paint nor even
Poly-tack the covering on my beauty. I am removing most structural adhesive in
favor of scotch tape and very light bailing wire. Does any one of you have an
extremely light weight "Experimental" decal I could buy?

I was thinking that if you took the normal "Experimental" decal, and
cut horizontal strips out of the material...say 1/4" wide...you could
probably cut the weight in half...a HUGE saving in weight, and the
word would still be readable. And stand by....I'm currently working
on a method of drilling lightening holes in bailing
wire...**aluminum** bailing wire.

Now that's a novel idea. An IFR Kitfox with O2 in the flight levels.
I dunno, sounds kinda wierd. But I suspect you're right about the
true airspeed.
>a IV with a 912 UL will see mid 120s or better at low altitude.
Lowell used to cruise at 115 mph, if I recall. I don't know what his
top speed was. I know when I travel with the 912 fleet, I'm only
about 10 slower in cruise than they are, which puts them around 100 mph or so.

I threw the O2 bottle out of the Turbo Arrow in the back of my
912S-powered IV and took her up to 17,500 (density altitude 19,600)
one day. She was still climbing 300 feet per minute (measured, not
indicated) but leveled off she didn't really pick up much speed.
Unfortunately, I never figured out what my TAS was on that adventure.
At more reasonable altitudes she could hit 140 mph in level flight
(full power) and high-speed cruise was between 125 and 130. I
usually went a bit slower because it required about 5.5 gph to get
those numbers. She was a speedster with clipped wings, wheel pants,
gas cap fairings, streamlined horizontal stabilizer braces, lift
strut fairings, the Safari-style cowling and every other
drag-reducing device I could think of. She also had an Ivo medium
in-flight adjustable prop and was pretty light (660 pounds empty).

I am currently test flying one of our EAA chapter members newly built experimental.
(Not a Kitfox but the same weight class.) During the painting process he
had trouble getting the paint on smooth so he added a few coats extra to smooth
it out. He used two part industrial paint from his work. The extra paint
added over 70 # to the target weight. Performance was hampered as well as the
useful load.
A coat of white under a light color will still be brighter than a light color over
poly spray alone. Probably be as light or lighter also.

One of the reasons that we have members who are over-sensitive to criticism is
the fact that we have too much criticism going on. Nobody joined the list in order
to have their views attacked. Can't we focus on positive and constructive
criticism, rather than the little-girl "catty" attacks? We are all full grown
men and don't value attacks on each others values. No one in the group is so
stupid/lame/weak that he will change his values because Joe Blow thinks he's wrong.
It's true that we have some "experts" in the group, but they must 'use their
powers for good...not evil.' Let's focus on Kitfoxes, not on trying to rebuild
each others values. It's too late for that. Those of us that are EVIL are
already lost.

only built a couple hundred... I would lean towards super coverite, monokote gets
too brittle in the cold. No nead to paint and rib stitching is optional if

Yup! But my favorite covering was Ultracote, not Money-Cote (as my
friends used to call it) The Ultracote seemed to stretch better in
all directions, unlike the Monokote...that I tried at least...which
seemed to stretch better in one direction than the other. My last
plane to cover was a still-unfinished (guess why?) Top Flite Giant
Scale Stinson Reliant SR- 9. Got everything built, and started to
cover with Stits Lite cloth, and was having so much fun with this
covering and shrinking deal that when it came time to do the 'fox, it
was a natural segue. I was amazed at how the fabric made the 3-
dimensional transition from the horizontal tail surface to the
vertical fin surface on the model. The same thing happened when I did
the same area on the Kitfox...that curve was pure sex!

Do you remember Supershrink Coverite? It was a fabric that I covered
a Top Flite Gold Edition P-40 with...over the balsa sheeting. They
discontinued the Supershrink shortly after I finished that plane. I
still have the plane. It was flown for me twice...I was too chicken-
- - - to fly it myself at the time. It has a YS 120AC engine in it...
2.45 "supercharged" 4-stroke ponies in that bad boy....2-strokes
suck!...in my humble opinion, of course.

Went flying in formation with a friend today. Not very far but we crossed the Oslo
fjord and I took a short video: Here it is:

As you can see, no snow near the coast. It has been a very mild winter.

Subject: | enclosed trailers |
Every year I look back and evaluate what it cost to fly and every year I see that
hanger rent makes up the largest percentage of my flying costs. So every year
I think about building an enclosed trailer not so much for transporting my
Kitfox but for storage at the airport.
I usually give up on the idea after two or three weeks of thinking about it.
However, has anyone on the list gone this route? I know there has been alot
of talk about trailers but not so much about enclosed trailers.

Mike, I hear that you can expect corrosion issues if you keep it in an
enclosed trailer. I have a friend that has one and he says I can use it, but
that
would only be for an off airport forced landing. Steve Bennett 4-912

Subject: | Re: enclosed trailers |
I bought my kitfox because I winter in Florida, spring and fall are in Arkansas,
and summer in Michigan and I needed a plane that I could take with me. My plane
came on an open, flatbed trailer that would carry it down the road, but not
provide much protection, I built a framework out of conduit, and covered it
with a tarp that is designed for covering lumber on semis. It has worked great
for about 2500 miles so far, and the plane has been "hangered" in it here
in Florida for the last three months. It takes about five minutes to roll it
out using the 12 volt winch that I installed. I haven't noticed any corrosion
or other ill effects from leaving it in the trailer. Of course, it isn't air
tight, and it isn't as secure as a rigid sided trailer would be, but has sure
worked well for me. The airport charges $30 per month to leave the trailer
in a tiedown spot, (beats $$$$ for hanger fees). I can probably take some pics
if you are interested.

the thing with enclosed trailers is..That you have to watch how wide the
back door opening is.I have a 24ft enclosed trailer.I would have to do
alot of changing of the back door drop down.to get it to fit inside.but
it would if do alot of changing to it to fit.and all so have to watch
how tall the trailer is.even if you would change the rear door to fit
.it would be a close fit trailer is 108 in wide, and KF is app 8ft wide
wings folded.U would have app 6in on each side of wings in the
trailer..real tight fit..but it has been done..you would need at least a
24ft-28ft trailer..Steve Shinabery N554KF KF2

Here's where my Kitfox IV lives. Out West we call them "toy
boxes" because they're made to haul dune buggies and the like. My Fox
fits with 1/2" to spare either side of the wings. It takes me seven
minutes to set up or tear down, but I designed for it. I pay for a
tie down so if I can get two more Foxes and boxes I'll get my monthly
down to $36.
I highly recommend it. Oh, and I have no problems with
condensation because the trailer walls are all vented out the bottom.
Also I have a couple of solar fans in the roof, and a solar panel
charger for my battery. The trailer cost $6600. (I didn't mind
because it's very marketable used.)
