Oh my. I can't even imagine what they would cost. It took

don't think the market's that big. Oh well.

MessageJeff, I did a little digging this morning and I found a bit of
info regarding install of the trigger wheel. If this doesn't make
sense, let me know.

I'm not aware of any NSI EA-81 engines with a distributor. They have
electronic dual ignition modules by Electromotive. I believe what Jeff
is referring to is the trigger wheel that is attached to the flywheel.
I'll go out this evening to check my books and see if I can find the
proper positioning of the trigger wheel.

The flywheel will only mount to the crankshaft in one way. The timing
marks should be indented on the flywheel itself. Maybe I am not
understanding your problem. Did you remove something? Was it the
flywheel or a distributor? If it is the distributor, then move number
one piston to TDC, rotate the distributor rotor so that it will point to
the number one pole plug wire on the distributor and then insert the
distributor into the drive hole making sure the rotor does not turn. Let
me know if that is it.

Hi all,
I haven't posted in many moons but here is my problem..
I've 'lost' my flywheel and TDC orientation to the electronic timing
gear thats mounted on the flywheel.
Could one of you fellow NSI engine owners for the EA-81 engine
please tell me in what orientation
the 'home notch' (where 3 teeth are missing) goes in relation to the
flywheel when it's TDC on the # 1 cylinder?
I have tried 2 different positions out of four possible ( I'm not
going to Vegas this year.) and it is sputtering and
backfiring like its timing problems.
Photos would be nice but if you can give an O'Clock orientation as
seen from the front that would be good also.
Thanks again, Jeff Smathers KF5 Molalla, OR

Michael,
That was indeed a workout. I agree with the other members that he should
not have attempted it. As a retired captain for a major US carrier and retired
Naval aviator, I too have had my workouts in strong crosswinds although not of
this magnitude which I personally would not attempt (although in Cancun one
night it was almost that bad)
I always used the crab and at the last moment the rudder to align the
aircraft. You have to get the upwind wing down or you will be wandering all over
the runway. Now Boeing wants you to land flat in a crab (like an Ercoupe)as one
of the other members mentioned so as not to hit an engine nacelle, wingtip, etc
AND a swept wing does act differently. However, the top rudder method worked
well for me and I found I could gauge the wind better. I have had times where I
had absolute full aileron deflection and thank god for taildragger training
and the rudder!
The captain on that carrier did a nice save and it is really easy to
"Monday morning quarterback" when you are not there. I know he used all his
skills.(and wishes he didn't need to)

I wonder if they can actually use all the tires again after a landing like
that?? 155 mph I thought it was only 50... @150 he should have landed
across the runway. ( just joking)

Yes! Those are some beautiful, seemingly, unmanageable cross-wind landings!
I can almost hear Kurt singing praises to the virtues of the great 777. In
some of those clips, it almost seems like the main gear extends down ahead
of the rest of the fuselage to meet mother earth and grab hold of terra
firma. Like a giant eagle clawing for her perch. One clip looks like the
nose pivots 20 degrees before planting the nose gear parallel to the center
line. Awsome!

Trying to come up with a color combo on a series 7. Is there any place on the
web to mix and match colors on a Kitfox ? I saw a 7 on here a couple months ago
that was to be painted like a L-3, I think it was done on a computer. Thanks
in advance.

Thanks Dick and everyone else; I know now that you don't land an airliner other
than by crabbing. I'll remember that for the day we are told that the crew is
sick and they need a pilot to land the bird! :-)

The tires may okay but they will probably never get all those seats clean again.

I remember being a passenger a few years ago on I think it was a 757, landing at
MIA in what must have been a hellacious x-wind. I was seated on the left side,
looking out the window at the numbers on the runway just prior to touchdown.
I don't think anyone else even noticed. I did thank the pilot as I de-planed.

Then again, some x-wind approaches are better executed than others, aren't they?

In Dec 1975 I was in a DC-8 that landed at gander Intl. Airport. The
runways were extremely icy and the reverse thrusters didn't seem to work at
all. I was in a right hand seat overlooking the wing..... Watching the
runway disappear in front of me as the plane slid down the runway sideways
at what seemed to be the speed of light. It was runway 31 and I could see
the lights of the town getting closer at an alarming rate!
Somehow or the other the plane ended up going down the runway backwards..
At least we didn't have to see what was happening! If you die that way
you'll never get into heaven...St. Peter would never believe it! Any way
the pilots got the darn thing stopped without leaving the runway for a tour
of the town. We taxied back to the terminal where we slid the last twenty
feet or so before the engines were shut down.... Bad move... The DC - 8
didn't have an APU and ground power wasn't available for close to an hour
while the crews outside were fighting ice to allow the power wagons to get
close enough to the plane to hook up. There we sat in the dark quiet cold
for close to an hour before they would get the power on for heat and light
.... Then we got to wait another fifteen minutes while the walkway to the
terminal ( no jetways... Still don't have 'em) was being de-iced. There
must have been some minor power in the plane because the pilot used the
intercom to make the announcements about the cold and dark and to apologize
for shutting down the last engine before ground power was hooked up.
