As this was the drawing of the original trailer the factory had been using since the time Dan Denney was the owner I'm sure many of the actual list members would like to have a look at it. Fortunately enough I still have the original drawing stored here, plus a copy of my commentaries I had included for the original posting. Anybody using this drawing should be aware that it stems from the pre-SkyStar era, and thus some of the dimensions contained in them may still relate to some superseded model versions and thus be out of date. I designed and welded up a multipurpose custom trailer which fits the Avid, my J-3 Kitten, and my VW dune buggy. One size fits all! I keep the Avid on its trailer in my garage and when I want to fly, I just open the garage door, roll it out and hook it on the car. At the airport, I can get it off of the trailer, unfold the wings and be taxiing in less than 10 minutes. I tow the Avid at about 65-70 mph except in very windy conditions. The two worst problems with trailering on an open trailer are rain, and large trucks, which have serious wake vortices. I therefore avoid driving behind any large boxy trucks! It=92s very important to restrain the elevators (both sides) and the rudder securely. Trailering is harder on the aircraft than anything except crashing! After a bad experience I constructed additional support struts to go from the forward =93tow on its own wheels=94 point to the wings folded strut. This essentially triangulates the wing support point, greatly lessening any possible movement. I also do not tow with anything more than a couple of gallons of fuel in the wing tank. I also welded up a pipe handle, which plugs into the =93tow on its own wheels=94 tubes and greatly aids in getting the Avid on and off the trailer, and maneuvering the plane while on the ground. All of these points can be seen in the photos section under =93Pops=92 Avid A=94 photos. Any information would be helpful > Thanks > Ted Ted, When the wings of a tri gear plane are folded back it becomes a tail dragger, ie the tail sits on the ground. I heard of a tri gear avid flyer that had it's fuselage bent enough to wrinkle the fabric from being improperly secured to a trailer. This one was transported on a long flatbed trailer that was kind of light duty. A tail support was secured to the trailer deck under the tail to keep the nose wheel down on the deck and the tail was tied down to the support. The nose wheel was also tied down to the deck. It was towed about 700 miles I think. The trailer flexed enough to bend the fuselage. My thinking on this is if there is any chance the transport may flex, either the nose or the tail can be on the deck but not both. Just something to consider. -------- Tom Jones Classic IV 503 Rotax, 72 inch Two blade Warp Ellensburg, WA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=168471#168471 ________________________________ Message 17 ____________________________________ Time: 12:51:27 PM PST US Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Jabiru Engines From: tc9008@aol.com Which engine is more suited for a 1998 Kitfox IV.
