Just to add to what Dave said: If you read the label on the additive you will find it cleans the exhaust valves and upper combustion chambers. Seeing as how the additive won't protect from lead plating onto the main roller type bearings when the fuel passes through the base of the engine, There are no exhaust valves and the effect on build up on the spark plugs is minimal if at all, the additive doesn't seem to do anything but add drain your wallet. Monsieur Bombardier et al, who builds the engine in the first place, does not recommend the use of AVGAS so I won't either. Noel -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of dave Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 10:20 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: Re: Fuel for 582 rotax Lead will fouls your plus more often and will end up in crankcase in bearings. I get 150 hours of one set of plugs and never have to use any "additives." I run regular gas 95% the odd time premium if I land at marina and that all that I can get and the very odd time a few gallons of Av gas if someone gives it to me. I would bring in a few jerry cans of regular gas before I used AVGAS. It is just pointless to use AVGAS and add an additive. Also I use only Bombardier XPS mineral oil .......... API - TC rated. That is what Rotax recommends and ROTAX recommend to NOT use AVGAS. -------- Rotax Dealer, Ontario Canada Flying Videos and Kitfox Info http://www.cfisher.com/

I would argue the amphib floats change a seaplane into a land plane and that is allowed. With penetration or retractable skis on the other hand a land plane remains a land plane so why shouldn't it also be allowed for the same reason as amphib floats... It's safer. At least in the winter when there are large expanses of snow that you can't do a forced approach on. Will guys who have the skis use them not in forced approaches?? I'd sure hope so. What happens if you land on a runway with your skis lowered (retractable)... You go out and buy another set of basses for your skis... You won't be taking off again unless there is a lot of snow on the runway.. Steve, with foot in mouth > [b] Steve, I would argue that the snow or ice that Lynn would be landing on is actually water that is a bit cold.. I would argue it just the same as they did for amphibs, and get a ruling that retractable skis are no different. Dan told me that he replaced the model 1 wings with model III wings & flaperons which he took off 89DD. I have verified this from my airframe logbook. Is there a reason the welds are not continuous? Noel -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of vetdrem Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 5:55 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: Re: aerocet 1000 amphibs Doug and Dave I took apart the right main and looked close at how it is constructed. They were originally the c channel with the lightening holes like the ones that failed in the pictures. the guy that I bought them from said that he had beefed up the mains, but it didn't mean much to me then, so I just let it go. Now I see that he welded a SS plate to the web of the channel, making it twice as thick, and welded a SS plate to the legs of the channel to turn it into a box shape. This is different than I had said before, so I just wanted to correct myself. I am adding a pic to better explain it. Just read this on another site, maybe it will help. The company name is A&E Generator in Salt Lake City. Their phone # is 1-800-234-0638 Fax is 801-521-4652. They had to order it in but it only took 3 days. The starter was exactly the same as the one I removed from the plane and it works great. I thought the price was great in comparison to what I've seen the aircraft parts stores selling them for. This price was with me providing them with my old starter in exchange. I have a home on Maryland's Eastern Shore and have found gas without ethanol in some Talbot County (example Easton- WaWa) and south stations up thru last fall, when I moved my Kitfox to home in the Fl Keys. I use either a 30 gallon rolling boat transfer tank from Boaters World in the back of an SUV or a 100 gallon metal fuel tank with 12 volt pump from Tractor Supply Co. in the bed of my pickup to transport the gas. I have boats and have had phase seperation whereby alcohol in car gas joins with water in boat tanks and settles out to the bottom of the tanks. My outboards will not run on the alcohol-water settleout but it can be drained off leaving what I understand is just base stock gasoline. However I have read that the remaining base stock gas has a lower octane rating than the original rarting posted on the gas pump. Years ago an Amoco scientist involved in the EAA auto gas STCs suggested I use 25% 100LL and 75% premium auto gas to boost the auto gas octane for use in my old high compression Corvettes. The same principle might work in this application. I am not sure that the above will work and don't know if anyone has experience doing it. Darin, You can get your N number anytime, reserve it on line on FAA site. Just before the FAA or private DAR does the airworthiness inspection, have an EAA technical advisor do a pre-inspection. You can find the nearest TA on EAA's website. darinh <gerns25@netscape.net> wrote: First off...why is it that the last 5% of the project takes 95% of the time? Seems like progress has slowed to a snails pace! Now the questions: For those of you who have done this before, when does one get the FAA involved for registration? Does the plane have to be "ready to fly" before starting the paperwork? Obviously, the plane needs to be ready to go when the DAR inspection is scheduled but can I get started on other paperwork before this? If so, anybody care to give me some pointers? 1 as a DAR I have never taken a home as payment,in fact the last homebuilt I did for free since it was at my home airport. you can register any time. do it soon as OKC is in the process of going all digital and seems to be loosing a lot of paperwork. make sure to keep a unsigned copy and a copy of what you sent. most DARs in Arkansas charge $450.00 plus expenses if long distance travel is required. I was told a few years ago by someone in a Rotax representative not to use a lead scavenger in 100LL in my 532 because lead scavengers are not compatible with 2-cycle oil and it would cause problems. If anyone has the "official" story from Rotax on lead scavengers in 2-cycles, I'd like to hear about it. Mike Perkins

To get the most heat out of a liquid cooling system you need to be able to divert coolant from the radiator to the heater, just as is done in cars. This means another special valve and re-plumbing the cooling system. When that is done there is obviously less cooling area in operation so even in winter the coolant will achieve hotter temperatures and you will get much hotter temperatures in your cockpit. I expect without a thermostat you will be taking a chance on cold shocking your engine if you turn off the interior heat while in flight. Even with a thermostat I'd operate that heat control very slowly, keeping an eye on the temperature gauge. Also put the control on the left side of the cockpit so a passenger won't have access to it You can also try plumbing your heater in series with the radiator that way the hottest water, leaving the engine will pass through your heater core before the radiator. Doing that will save weight but you won't have any control over the heat other than the fan. It will allow the whole system to operate more efficiently but in the summer, more sq inches of radiator in operation, but you may want to fly with the doors left back on the ground. Subject: Gasoline Question?
Wash it out with water. .. In a 20 gal plastic/steel barrel put about a gallon of water (steel is better it can be grounded). .. Add ten or twelve gallons of gas. .. Stir well. .. Let stand twenty minutes to be sure all the water has settled out. .. Siphon the gas off the top of the barrel into a suitable container through a Mr. Funnel or a chamois/felt to fuel your plane. Doing this will also remove any dust or other particulate that may be in the gas. The remaining gas will be a few octane rating points lower than the original gas so try a small quantity in your engine first to make sure the engine doesn't ping especially on takeoff. The water you drain off is very corrosive but bio degradable... don't use it on your lawn or flowers. Unless you want your grass to come up half cut. J You can put a drain in the bottom of the barrel (would have to be on a stand) to drain the water off before siphoning the gas. Down side is treating gas at other strips. Dragging the barrel around can be a problem. Ethanol really becomes problematic at concentrations of 10%. Lower if you leave gas in your plane. If you are out and have to use contaminated fuel for one afternoon I' go ahead but only in relatively warm temperatures. On returning I 'd drain my tank treat the fuel and put it back into the tank to dilute any contaminated fuel left in the tank. If you premix your gas the ethanol won't damage your tanks but the chances of phase separation, where the eth, water and oil separate from the gas, is higher. When that happens to mixed gas there is a heavy white-grey sludge that won't burn that will appear in your fuel system. To add insult to sludge the gas floating on top of the sludge is perfectly good to use. Louie - That makes sense, as I later realized positioning my size plate and 'box' welding to the channel legs wouldn't allow it to extend up the gear far enough to pass and reinforce the thinnest web area near the largest lightening hole. So now I'm back to putting them flat on the backside I guess. Maybe I'll make up some new, longer plates and box it too, feels a little like overkill though. Anyhow, the size reinforcing plates I have were included in the box 'o parts received with my floats. After seeing several now, I wonder if they weren't provided to existing owners as a SB by Aerocet or Stoddard-Hamilton after a few failures were reported? Also, while I'm thinking about it, keel strips were never installed on my floats. Looks like 1/2" stainless bolted at each end, but how is it secured lengthwise? Glued or thru hull screwed into the bulkheads, or ??? Assembly info I have doesn't show, thx. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=173066#173066

Mixing will work, but remember, in a two stroke engine the gas passes through the base of the engine before going into the cylinders. The main bearings in a two stroke engine are lubricated by the gas (lead if present) and oil in the fuel. They are roller bearings and the lead in the gas can plate out onto the bearings which, in turn, can cause them to fail... According to Mr. Murphy only at the worst possible time. This is why additives don't work for 100LL to be used in two stroke engines. Using a 100LL mix in your old 'Vettes is a good idea. It doesn't have main roller bearings and lead won't bother it at all. In fact you may want to try straight 100LL just make sure your cars don't have the catalytic convertors. Also make sure you save it for use on the race track because there is no road tax on AVGAS and local authorities may take a dim view on using it on public highways. OK, here is my next question. I disconnected the cables that operate the nose gear. Both sides will lock in both the up and down positions, and the doors seem to operate correctly, BUT..... I noticed that the wheels looked like they didn't lower the same distance when in the down position. I started measuring things, and found that the urethane "bumpers" are not the same length. I pulled them out and, sure enough, they are a lot different. They acted different during the extend and retract action, too. The long one would operate smoothly in both directions, but the short one would act like you were pushing it over center about half way up, then it would move easily into the well. It acted the same way coming down. All this is with the linkages and cables disconnected, so the only thing coming into play is the gear itself with the urethane bumpers attached. I assume that the difference in length of the urethane is causing the mid-point restriction (almost like you are trying to slightly compress the urethane). the question is which one, if either, is correct. should I turn down the long one to match the short one, or buy a new one for the short side. I am including a pic of both of them to help explain. Thanks, Louie Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=173087#173087 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/dscf0220_176.jpg

Weight is about the same... Not that much extra coolant. Heater core less than a couple of pounds extra plumbing fan and controls again less than a two pounds. Biggest consideration to me is no carbon monoxide from a leaky muff. I've seen firsthand the effects of minor carbon monoxide poisoning from a leaky muff and a bad detector. Scrap yard will get you a small heater core less than $10.00. Muff and scat tubing are pretty light, I think, compared to radiator, fan, wiring, switch, hoses, clamps, mounting hardware, controls and extra coolant. Maybe I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. patrick reilly <patreilly43@hotmail.com> wrote: Your 582 is water cooled. If you fly in the winter at the temps we do, the heater core WILL NOT produce enough to keep the windshield clear. I did not get cold as I had on my full snow machining gear but not having forward vis was a little problematic. They have been running heat muffs since the beginning of time in cubs etc. I will take my chances with that and continue to enjoy flying year round. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 IVO IFA Full Lotus 1260 95% complete Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=173155#173155

While I stand by my previous view of *my* heater while *in flight*, I must say that during the ( long) time I am waiting for oil temp to rise to an acceptable temp for takeoff, the heater does tend to take the chill out cockpit. It is kind of nice to have a sytem that does not rely on fast foward motion and exhaust temp to supply at least a bit of comfort. It's just the opposite of my C-172L, where you just want to get flying as quick as you can just to get some heat forced through the ducts. (No,I don't have an oil thermostat either.) I'm just a stupid mechanic\pilot, but wouldn't a combination (installation) of both systems be the best of both worlds?? Steve 84KF KF5 \ 912UL

Forgive be if someone has mentioned this in the past, but has anyone tried to use the type of device that is used on (at least) a C-172L to collect hot air for carburetor heat? It is a simple, foward facing, open-ended stainless box, with small tabs top and bottom, and is attached to an exhaust header with 2 stainless hose clamps. Must weigh all of 3-4 oz's. Airflow in flight forces hot air radiating the pipe to flow to the carb. This is the best picture I have, but if you zoom in you can see it attached to the rear exhaust header feeding hot air to the carb air box. Simple, cheap, lightweight, ....and available pre-fabricated. Just a thought....
