Noel,
Do you know the part number and source of the appropriate valve? I have
pestered people at parts stores and parts departments and have not found any
that work. I plumbed my cabin heat core in parallel with the radiator and
have a shut off valve that stops the flow to the heater core. There is
still a lot of coolant that goes to the radiator. I have thought of a
restriction in front of the radiator, but it is a safety issue.
Randy - kinda cold in the winter.

To get the most heat out of a liquid cooling system you need to be able to
divert coolant from the radiator to the heater, just as is done in cars.
This means another special valve and re-plumbing the cooling system. When
that is done there is obviously less cooling area in operation so even in
winter the coolant will achieve hotter temperatures and you will get much
hotter temperatures in your cockpit. I expect without a thermostat you will
be taking a chance on cold shocking your engine if you turn off the interior
heat while in flight. Even with a thermostat I'd operate that heat control
very slowly, keeping an eye on the temperature gauge. Also put the control
on the left side of the cockpit so a passenger won't have access to it
You can also try plumbing your heater in series with the radiator that way
the hottest water, leaving the engine will pass through your heater core
before the radiator. Doing that will save weight but you won't have any
control over the heat other than the fan. It will allow the whole system to
operate more efficiently but in the summer, more sq inches of radiator in
operation, but you may want to fly with the doors left back on the ground.

In the meantime you could use two simple ball valves, one each on the rad
and the heater.

Airplane has been encased in ice of late. Life in the Great White

Yesterday was warm so I went out to fire up the engine. Turning the prop
by hand showed more resistance on one of the compression strokes. I pulled
the plugs and one cylinder had oil in it...about a half a cup or so. I
have seen this before when the plane sat for awhile. Oil seems to seep
into the cylinders...probably because the oil tank is on the top of the
engine and it syphons into the crankcase and it seeps past the rings over
time. Last time it was one of the rear cylinders..but I was on wheels
then. This time a front...on anphibs it sits slightly nose down.
Anyone else see this kind of thing? Hopefully so. I am hoping I do not
have a ring issue or something like that.

Ted,
It is a short section of orange noodle with orange ribbon attached (a noodle like
you use in a swimming pool). It is split on one side and slides over the pitot
tube. The pitot tube is in the perfect location to be accidentally walked
into. We carry it when we know the plane will be parked where there is the
potential for folks to stroll by! I have added another pictures that shows it
a little better.
Better safe than sorry!

Kitfox is also sold out. Grove says they need 3 month to make more.
I need two of them as I am converting from the 6" Matco Wheels to the original
8" Atv Wheels and the existing Axles are too short. I don't want to wait this
long.
Please contact me directly if you have 2 of these- the long, Grove Axles for ATV
wheels from the link above- I'll buy them.

It is time for a condition inspection on my Classic 4 already. I want to make my
own landing gear bungees this time. It seems like I found the procedure for
making the end loops using either rib lacing cord or safety wire and filed it
away where I can't find it now. I think it was in AC43.13-1B. Can someone point
me to where it was I saw it or describe the procedure? I could be wrong about
it being in AC43.13-1B because I sure can't find it there now.

With the radial engines, also dry sump, they used to say to wait until
twelve blades (four blade prop) passed the window before turning on the
mags. The phenomenon called hydraulic lock where lower cylinders can fill
with oil and can actually have the cylinders blown off the engine when other
cylinders fire. You are doing good... keep checking before each start.

I actually used both but they do totally different things. Marvel is a
lubricant and the TCP works to keep lead deposits soft and blown out. At
leasts that's how I understand it. I now prefer the Lucas fuel treatment
to the marvel and I have no need of the TCP. There is also another
product that's does the same thing as TCP. I do not recall the name
though. If you are using auto fuel you do not need the TCP.

Guys,
I recent bought and, just on Sunday, started flying a Kitfox Model II. I've flown
in it a few times, but no take-offs or landings. On Sunday I was out with
my instructor (working on my tailwheel endorsement) and on our first landing
the left side gear leg collapsed during roll out. The field was soft, as was
the landing, but the plane just tipped onto its side. Luckily no damage other
than the gear.
I assume it is the result of fatigue from earlier poor landings. I looked the
plane over quite thoroughly before buying and noticed nothing, as well as during
the preflight. Has there been an issue with the gear on the Model IIs?
Most importantly is there someone out there who has a set of legs, or just the
left, and would be willing to sell it? Kitfox Aircraft can't help, I've already
called them; all they can offer is a new spring gear, for which I currently
don't have the money. If no one has a used gear available are there any other
sources of parts for me? My last resort is fabricating a new leg, which I
can do if I must, but I'd prefer to buy something complete.

You might try Airdale/Avid, the early Kitfox was an Avid copy (here we go
again) and perhaps the gear legs are the same. Leave Steve a message and
he should get back to you. Their number is 1-208-459-6254 Jim Chuk Avid
