What is the point ? The posting was about Gear Leg so why go on your banter about
the Kitfox /Avid story ? Just ask Dean Wilson how it started he willl give
you an honest answer?
Seems like since Mc Bean has no interest in helping out then I would bet Steve
Winder at Airdale would. I thought Murle Williams was a well rounded Kitfox
guy too?
I have a set of KF 2 Gear on hand here now but IT a customers and I could certainly
make a new gear for him if no one else can. What would a fair price be
for a Tube gear ?

Gary,
It's perfectly normal to have oil siphon from a high oil tank into the
cylinders over time. My Kitfox does it all the time. It's just like a radial
engine I used to have on a Waco. That is why you turn the prop thru so as to prevent
a "hydraulic lock" which will do a number on your engine.
If you check your oil level without turning the prop, you can see the
quantity go down on the dipstick for each day that you do not rotate the prop.
Mine
goes from max to below min in a week.

In addition to that, after trailering mine 1700 mi, a theory not proven,
it drains faster bouncing on the trailer. A short trip to the airport
could require a couple of rotations.

Cory,
Is your instructor experienced with landing the Kitfox. The tube gear is prone
to breaking if the plane is landed in a crab. The engine cowl tapers significantly
from the rear to the nose and gives the pilot the impression the plane
is in a crab when it is straight and vise versa. being a relatively new kitfox
pilot myself I can attest that this illusion is real. There was a post a few
years ago from a Kitfox owner that was taking a flight review in his own kitfox
and had to make a few landings to convince his instructor and even then the
instructor tried to touch down with the plane in a crab.
Before I flew my kitfox the first time I stood behind it and lined the centerline
up with a water tower about 200 yards away. I then sat in the seat and made
a mark on the windshield that lined up on the water tower. When landing this
line must be lined up on the runway centerline.
A picture of my "Kitfox landing site line is attached".

Guys,
I recent bought and, just on Sunday, started flying a Kitfox Model II. I've
flown in it a few times, but no take-offs or landings. On Sunday I was out
with my instructor (working on my tailwheel endorsement) and on our first
landing the left side gear leg collapsed during roll out. The field was
soft, as was the landing, but the plane just tipped onto its side. Luckily

I assume it is the result of fatigue from earlier poor landings. I looked
the plane over quite thoroughly before buying and noticed nothing, as well
as during the preflight. Has there been an issue with the gear on the Model
IIs?
Most importantly is there someone out there who has a set of legs, or just
the left, and would be willing to sell it? Kitfox Aircraft can't help, I've
already called them; all they can offer is a new spring gear, for which I
currently don't have the money. If no one has a used gear available are
there any other sources of parts for me? My last resort is fabricating a
new leg, which I can do if I must, but I'd prefer to buy something complete.

Yes you can but I would suggest camping at the YMCA about 3 miles away. You
camp on an air-conditioned and heated and dry indoor soccer field. The run a
bus to the show daily and the facilities are great. Indoor pool, weight
room ,kids area etc.

Considering MMO is mostly Stoddard solvent It may work as well on the upper
cylinder... I doubt it will do the square root of sweet nothing to protect
your main bearings from lead plating if you use 100LL.

The simple answer is yes. They have camping to tents or RV's but RV space
is limited. Here is the link to review your options

Have a great time. I have been their twice. Flown in once and camped and
then stayed at one the universites the second time.

Some pics attached.
It was pretty strange. As I said, the landing was not bad, and the field was pretty
soft, but right after touching down we heard a snap and the plane just kind
of leaned over.
You can see in the pictures that the tube on the leading edge of the leg is bent
and the strut that reaches up toward the bungees is cracked near its confluence
with the rest of the gear. The fabric damage is the result of our official
investigation, not the incident itself. No corrosion was found, and the crack
in the strut appears fresh.
Luckily that's all that broke; we could have pretty easily wiped the radiator off
the bottom of the plane or had a prop strike.

Robert,
Yes you can camp at Camp Scholler as was already suggested. I usually stay the
week in an old camper I tow down (I live pretty close) and it's a pretty good
time. It does lack the amenities of the Y but it's convenient.

I don't either, Bill, but I'd be glad to let you shoot pictures of my
engine installation and help you change your mind about engine
choices. : ) That is, if the weather cooperates.

I have the same question. How do you know MMO is Stoddard solvent? Where did you
find that information or is just a guess or hearsay?
The mining companies use it by the 55 gallon barrels for many applications including
all air tools. The military also uses barrels of the stuff. In view of
this I wouldn't think it is Stoddard solvent.

Here is something I read a few years ago, it is an accident report on the N
STB site that mentions MMO and in the 5th paragraph up from the bottom, it
says that MMO is mineral oil, stoddard solvent, and lard (75%, 24%, 1%) I
can't say for sure this is true, it is an official gov. document though, s
o who knows. Hope this long link comes out okey. I found it again on the
web by searching Marvel mystery oil FAA and found it on the second page I
think. Jim Chuk Avids Mn
