I purchased an eight year old Kitfox Lite project a month ago. It was
very complete, except for lack of templates. I'm located in northern
Illinois. My problem is removing the removable plastic film from the
.015 aluminum on the flaperons. It seems to be age hardened and comes
off in small pieces, sometimes fleck by fleck. I'm looking for
suggestions to get it off the flaperons. Thanks in advance. Charles

Lots of luck!! I've been dealing with the same thing on my Kitfox 4. Dena

Chuck, there are tons of information in the archives about this very
topic that pops up about every six months or so. You'll probably get a
bunch of replies because you are not alone. Some have had good luck
with a rag soaked in kerosene. Leave it lay there for an hour or so and
see what happens. Others have used WD40 allowing it soak into the film.
Whatever you use, just ensure it isn't reactive to the foam inside the
flaperon. That's what holds it's shape and gives it more strength.
Good luck,

Paper towels soaked with mineral spirits/paint thinner laid on the
flaperon for a few hours will penetrate the bond, and the film will
lift off with perhaps some mild rubbing. Keep the towels soaked, but
away from the hinge slots.

Charles,
Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some of the thick, cheap, paint remover.? Soak
the film with the stuff and keep it wet for about 20 minutesor until it starts
to 'bubble'.? With a plastic scrapper gently get under a corner and lift it
up continuing to lightly scrape across the flaperon.??? Be careful not to let
the goop?get inside the flaperon and 'melt' the foam ribs.? ?Also, I would recommend?doing
no?more than 2 or 3 feet at a time.? It's a?messy job, but it will
work.? My flaperons were covered for about 10 years and they came clean just
fine, however, it was a lot of work.
Good luck,
Rick Weiss

Subject: | Planning Trip to High Valley Resort (north Georgia) |
We are planning a flying trip to High Valley Resort (GA87) in north Georgia. This will be scheduled around the Memorial Day Weekend. For more information go to their website at www.highvalleyresort.com . We made 4 trips to HVR last year. The runway is grass, 2000 with an elevation of 2,800 MSL. There are mountains all the way around youyoure in a valley! The camping is wonderful and the facilities are spectacular. They also have 6 large log cabins that sleep 8, 4 single room Bunkhouses that are a single room log cabin (you use the camping facilities) and certainly tent camping. We know the owners and they are always very accommodating to us and our group. When flying in, they always have a vehicle for us to use for sight seeing, dinner, etc.
Here is our tentative plan: Depart Friday 5/23/08 around 5:30 and fly from Mobile,
AL (MOB) to Monroeville, AL (MVC), eat catfish and spend the night (Davids
Catfish House and the Best Western are side by side and a 7 minute walk from
the airport. Depart around daybreak if weather permits. Arrive GA87 around
9:30-10:00. The return flight home will be on Monday, 5/26/08 (Memorial Day).
At present, were not sure if well camp, stay in a Bunkhouse (single room cabin),
or do the large log cabin thing (sleeps 8). If you have ANY interest in this,
please let me know ASAP for scheduling purposes. This could be a perfect Kitfox
get-a-way. It would be nice to meet a few more Fox owners. If you have
ANY interest in this, please let me know ASAP for scheduling purposes. Hope to
hear from you.
