Rick,
Thanks. Looking like we ought to form a Kitfox WOPA chapter. I think
there's at least 4 Warrant Officers, both retired and active duty, that get
on the list.
I also flew single engine fixed wing charter work year around in interior
Alaska after retirement for 8 years. Plenty mountains and winds, but the DA
wasn't such a problem.

First,
John glad you made it home my brother. James as a former 23 year Marine
you guys are our heroes.
AS for my mountain flying, lets see, I once took off in the mountains
with a 9K DA wind blowing 30 gust to 43 switching back a forth 20
degrees to either side of the runway. I had 4 guys walk my wings out on
the kitfox to get me to the runway. I should have know better and when
the guys yelled to their friends "hey you guys got to see this", that
should also have been my clue to listen to the small voice in my head
that was saying " hey dumb ass what are you doing. It went fine, bounced
and twisted every which way but straight until I hit 8,500 where it
smoothed out. Wont say I was scared but the wood stick grip had to be
sanded from the sweat raising the grain. Would I do it again. Don't
think so. Glad I did it then, yep. Unfortunately heroes like you and
John do not get to choose what kind of crap you fly in. That's why you
and all those in harms way are so appreciated by those that know what
sacrifice is. Thanks

Just trying to post a thread that will get some active and relaxing
posting going. Since I am in Afghanistan right now every day is an
adventure flying. This is some of the most unforgiving terrain you can
imagine. The other day we were flying down a valley at about 200' agl
and I realized that we didn't pass a single, reasonable, forced landing
area for about 5 minutes. 45 degree walls going straight into a river.
A few weeks ago we were on the floor of a valley about 200 meters wide
where we had to keep doing U-turns and yet stay low, again with 45
degree walls on either side. It came down to doing a chandelle or
wingover type maneuver in a 5000 lb helicopter and
recovering at about 20' agl. All this and at 8-10,000' DA. So what
are
YOUR mountain flying stories? I want to hear about it.

I went ahead and installed the VG's and did a test flight this morning. They worked
just about as advertised and the increased stability on TO and Landing really
makes it a treat to fly.

Here's some fun mountain [top] video clips I ran across recently:
Wheeeee....
_____________________________
Short field hilltop (02:41): 200ft. short ,16 degrees steep, bumpy hilltop landing in a Just Aircraft Highlander. Pretty intense and way fun! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUgW-9WQ1C4
STOL hilltop fun in my Highlander (06:00): The 1st hilltop in this clip is 20 degrees steep and 150 ft long. altitude about 3500 ft. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zioQVUSWcY
Short steep hilltop rearview (01:37): This same place is on earlier clips but I thought this was an interesting perspective. It was about 75 with 4800 DA. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Gy5mn8_Y8
Tailflying fun! (02:44): Playing on very short steep tiny hilltop and ya I know, one of my tailwheel springs came unhooked. I had a great time landing lots of cool places yesterday in my Highlander. What a fun airplane! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el3M3ua3Zm8

If you meant the carpet (normal plastic indoor outdoor) the panels are
.020 cut to follow the tubes with about 3/4" extra. They are riveted
through the firewall to stainless 1/2" "L" stiffeners from below the
footwell bend in the firewall and "stitched" to the frame tubes with tie
wraps the carpet is glued to the aluminum and the extra folded over to
give a finished edge.
Not my creation it was done by a gentleman in New Brunswick, Glen
McGuigan.

Subject: | 912 oil cooler placement?? |
My 7/Sport has a little fit problem at the front of cowling. Prop hub (not extension)
just forward of cooling and exhaust closer to the front of cowling then
I prefer, but this the way I bought the kit. So I have issues with placing the
cooler in front of the rectangular slot opening below the Prop opening. I noticed
a few Kitfox 6 or 7's with the oil cooler sitting in front of the radiator.
Any thoughts??

Joa Harrison recommended 10% for the Kitfox. I put mine a little over 5.1" to
the middle of the VG's on the wing. I put them about 2" in front of the hinges
on the stabilizer. I bought two sets so I put 128 VG's on the wings and 52
on the stabilizer. My stall went from 39 to 30mph and with 10 degrees of flaps
it went from 35 to 25mph. Slow flight can be done at 35 mph now. It makes
for awesome short field landings and take-offs.

joa,
the results of your vg's is impressive. did you do any speed runs
before and after installation for w.o.t. speed loss?
i saw similar results with wing vg's on a dakota hawk. there was a
loss of a couple mph., but worth it.

Wow -- huge number gain.
I have tried and add got far less gains, mind you I still have them on.
What model do you fly and how do you calibrate your airspeeds to give those impressive
numbers?
How long is your take off run ? How many degrees flaps are you using ?

The plane is a Kitfox Series-7 ELSA. I am not a test pilot and these are definitely not "calibrated" or exact airspeeds. These are strictly before and after speeds on a Dynon D-100. It gives a digital airspeed reading and has been pretty close to the overall ground speeds I get on my GPS. (no wind). If you go to www.landshorter.com and look at the testimonials, some others have had the same success.

My oil cooler is mounted in front of the radiator on my Kitfox 5, the oil
runs so cool that I had to add an oil thermostat, it may be a slightly
oversize oil cooler though. I know it was replaced before I bought this
plane.

Rich , I have tested both StolSpeed and Harrison with minimal results. Mind you
that was model IV I have. Mine work but I never seen those kind of numbers.
You should try with a GPS .

Dont know yet, WX too crappy right now. I did notice that it lifted into the air
much smoother. Before it kinda lept up. Now it just gently lifts off. That
could have been pilot technique but I didn't change anything. I was getting
off in less than 200 ft before. I think it is little less now. The engine
is a Rotax 912uls. I will try it and let you know. I have the runway lights
measured out here so I know pretty well how long my takeoff run is.
