Very interesting, You will have to give us a detailed report on the Vgs and plane specs-- like weight etc. I likely will in time alter mine to see if I can get any gains like that but not holding my breathe. Have you flight tested your plane now? how are stalls before and after ? power on and power off ? Dave, I have a set of VG's that I am dying to put on my 4 but am not sure if it is worth it from some of the other guys who have tried it..Now I am seeing the numbers from the 7 and maybe I will. However you are saying there is no difference in stall speed. How about cruise? Are you loosing any speed. Since putting"fat" tires on my Fox I have lost a few mph and would rather not loose any more (pretty soon a 701 will be faster then me) I put VG's on my previous airplane(Piper Pacer) and it made a big difference. I would like to have a little more elevator authority without taping the gap. Maybe VG's on the stab would suffice. Any results on that? Thanks! Dick, I lost about 2 mph going from 16.5 x 8.00 tires to the Kingfox 21" tall x 9" wide tires. I was just out this AM with a TAS 90 to 92 mph cruise with a 582 at 6000 rpm @ 19litres/hour fule burn. my buddy has a 701 wiht 912 and cruises at 85 which is hte same pseed i cruise on amphib floats yet he is on wheels so you likely not have any worries there. I never lost any cruise speed with Vgs. I might of lost one or 2 mph on stall speed and can fly in slow flight perhaps a few mph slower that without the Vgs. Like i said before I have not taken them off yet but the gains were small. I think anyone who uses VGs should be forewarned from my experience that your stall characteristics will change. So go out and try some stalls and not the pansy ones like power off straight ahead stuff , but yet power on and stalls and departure stalls and approach stalls. I can tell you that I found that some of the buffeting that I felt before was now gone. And on more aggressive stalls you will find it breaks quicker and will likely be more prone to drop a wing. You will be able to spin easier as well. That being said I certainly think that they are neat and might help a bit but when i read claims of 10 an 15 mph stall reductions when i never saw anything like that I have to just look and listen. Mine are at about 10% chord including flapperons. I think just over 5" if I recall. I would have posted here last year when I did it if you want to look it up . Here is a pic of them http://www.cfisher.com/vg.html I did get good gains from using harrison VGs for lowering coolant temps here. Please everyone try them and post your findings. Maybe I am not seeing full benefit that others do for some reason? I will tell you that Kitfox VGs from http://stolspeed.com/ come with Adhesive sheets of 2 sided kick ass tape and are a hell of a lot easier to put on than the Harrison ones. From: "Firm" <howfirm@gmail.com>
I had a nose gear fold with a 4-1200 and NSI setup on a grass runway yesterday, The builder was having trouble with the tailwheel landings so he did the conversion. The I bold failed. I think it is a 1/4 or 5/16. Anyway, has anyone else done a nose dragger conversion on a NSI package? With the Main gear moved back, it seemed very nose heavy. We got lucky as there was no other damage, the prop went into the grass/dirt a few inches, but the only thing broke was the bolt. Thanks for any info. Deke! I am doing fine. I have been in The hot deserts of the middle east for the last 2 years. I'm home now and starting to get the bug to build another kitfox...I guess I'm not ready to give up yet. My model 5 was destroyed in the hanger in December 2006 when a pre-heater on a 152 failed and caught fire. The whole hanger went up along with my motorcycle and my friends' KR-2. I'm really getting the itch for another! I'll be in the market for a -5, -6, or-7 taildragger!! I live near Minneapolis now...There are a lot of names on this list I never heard before, so I'm glad the see there is still activity! I'm glad to see that the company is doing better, Does McBean own it now? Good to be back! Howard Fox5flyer wrote: > Howard Firm, our old friend. Long time no hear from you. Today we had great weather here in Norway, and I went flying again. Had 12 landings. The tip about gap-sealing the elevator was great, have much more elevator authority now. I can 3 point now without the bouncing with the same flap setting. So my problem (except that I am a amateur in a taildragger) was as a lot of you described, my main wheel touched before the tail wheel, and when the tail wheel hit the ground, the angle was increased and I had more lift to take care of. Thanks to all for your tips, it helped me a lot. I am practicing on 3 point landings before going to the next step with wheel landings. Will gap seal my elevators, and not use the flap when practicing landings (have to fly about 30 min to another airstrip to practice landings) but this airstrip is long and nice (soft field). Will come back with more info how everything is going. But I clearly see the problem with using the flap and elevator authority, and all I need is practice. Some friends of me did not believe a Kitfox 4 would cruise on or above 100mph, but what you wrote below here state my numbers. I just finished with my daily flight and I actually took notice of what happens when I land. First off, and I think this is important, I'm going to post some stats on my airplane. Kitfox model 4 1200 speedster. Rotax 912 80horse Ivo prop inflight adjust. dry weight is 650 300left 302right 48tail I have vg's on the wing with 10%back, none on the horizontal I have gap seals on the elevator, but they have blown out on about 30% of such. I weigh in at a whopping 180lbs. If I have a passenger that's another 160. I have two 16gal tanks in the wings. I have a cruise speed of 103kts. Gps. Now when I land I normally do a short in approach, generally about a 1000ft out from the approach end of the runway, I will do 100mph indicated on the down wind, when In base I will be doing about 90mph, then I turn to final with a 60degree bank about 100ft off, as I'm half way in the turn I will put in full right rudder and slice it down to about 20 off the ground at which time I will be around 80mph, I keep in right rudder and level off and let up on the aileron and use only that needed to keep centerline, I will keep this until about 60 than I will straighten the aircraft and land it. If I do a straight in I will establish 70mph for the final, seems to work best for me, any slower and the nose comes up to much and gets too boring, No flaps ever, I like to have 60 over the approach end of the runway, flat prop, and power all the way back, (my rpm for full back is 300rpm, real slow) As I run over the approach end I will be about 10ft off, I start to pull back on the stick to get a slight nose high, after this I use throttle only, as I slow so does the engine, so I increase slightly. When I touch down I'm always at 40mph, 45 will make me bounce slightly, not noticeably by anybody watching, but I know it. I had to go out and fly some touches to know what my speeds are because to be frank, I don't look at my indicator, I just fly in. I may glance at the airspeed to make sure I'm close to 70 at about 3000ft out. When I do a wheel landing I do the same speeds except the touch down is at 55mph indicated, makes a real nice landing. Than I will pull power off and slowly pull back on the stick to lower the rear wheel. Remember your ailerons will start working at 25mph. with no flaps those buggers work real good also Now just a little brag here, I put on new tires last year, I have over 6000 landings on them. I never squeak the tires, and very seldom bounce. I put in 310hrs. 408 flights for 2007. I do an average of 30 t &G a flight. I can do a touch and go every minute. It should give more directional authority when landing in crosswind conditions. Not that I have tested much myself, though; as a Norwegian, I am just as scared as you are of crosswind! :-) Cheers, Michel

On my 912 ul my mag drop left side is 350 rpm. The right side is 300 seems excessive. These checks are done 3900 rpm. Pulled plugs all look fine. Only 103 hrs but 12 years old. Is this normal? Another question what are typical egt's for this motor. Any thoughts would be great thanks. It is with great sadness I have been forced to relinquish ownership of 375kl. But, that is what happens when one reaches beyond one's financial grasp. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all you fine people who take the time to answer all the questions from guy's like me. From the mundane to the intricate, you guy's have the answers, and if you don't, you certainly bs pretty well.:-) Anyway, I really hope someday to return, maybe with my own build in progress. Welcome back, Howard. You've had some bad luck with Kifoxes! First, the Purple Monster crashing and burning after sucking in that bird, then losing another to a hangar fire. Are you sure you want to build again? :-) Then again, they say that "Three times is a charm!". Yes, the List has some new members, but most of the old timers and charter members are still here and things have been fairly smooth for the most part. Yes, John McBean has successfully resurrected the Kitfox factory and all of us are relieved to have his support and knowledge available to us when we need it. Subject: Finally flying again
    From: Danny <vft@aol.com>
Well, today was the day and I=99ve finally flown my Rocket. It =99s been a long time coming and I=99m just over the moon with how wel l things went. I am a relatively low time pilot (< 300hrs) and I had not flo wn much of anything thing in the last 4 years. I knew going into this projec t that the Rocket was going to be a big step up in performance as all of my time up to very recently had been in my Kitfox. In preparation for the Rocke t I got myself back into flying by getting my biannual and high performance endorsement in a =9956 182. I know the 182 is not considered much of a high performance aircraft but compared to the Kitfox it was. This was also my first exposure to constant speed props. After this I got some dual in a R V-6 (10 hrs and 87 landings) with me in the right seat. In addition to this my brother has a really sweet Extra 300LP so I took advantage of any time it was available and flew it from the front seat. This was great prep for the Rocket as the sight picture is very similar (the Rocket has better vis over the nose) as is the takeoff performance (the Rocket beats it here too) and o verall sound/feel. With all this recent experience I=99ve been pretty confident I could handle the Rocket. All that I needed was a good day and th at day has finally come. I don=99t quite remember much of the takeoff other than I was grinning from ear to ear and the plane went straight as an arrow. My plan was to sta y in the pattern for a bit but shortly after lift off the tower called and s aid if I was going to keep climbing I needed to contact Orlando Approach. At quick glance at the altimeter showed I was at 3000=9D and climbing ( =9Cgee no wonder the earth was falling away so fast=9D) so I switched frequencies, checked in with Orlando and settled in at 4500 =99. After setting power @24/24 I let the airplane accelerate and star ted to get a feel for things. I don=99t remember any of the numbers bu t the general feeling of the airplane is fantastic. The other thing a notice d very quickly was how much ground it was capable of covering in a short per iod of time. As in =9Cheywhere=99d the airport go? =9D After approx 15 min I figured it was time to get a feel for the lower end of the speed envelope so I slowed it down, got the flaps out, and did s ome slow flight and approach stalls. All of this was a piece of cake so I br ought the power back up to start climbing and the master engine caution alar m went off with a high oil pressure alarm. This got my attention pretty quic k (as it should) but the engine sounded ok and after checking the Dynon EMS- 10 it was apparent that all of the sensors were having an issue. Heeding the advice of many that it=99s better to trouble shoot things on the grou nd I headed back to the airport. The approach was very easy to manage and th e landing was pretty fair. Two light skips and she settled on all three and rolled out without much input from me. All in all it was a great first fligh t.
