Subject: | Rotary engine in a Kitfox? |
I have been doing some research on engines and came across Rotamax. Does anyone
know of a Kitfox flying with one of these, or any plane for that matter? I
am curious about burn rate, operation cost (including TBO), and any other useful
information. Thanks.

How does one know what "full flaps" are on the model IV and where is the

After a bit more work, and a lot more time than I had estimated, I have my Kitfox-
4-1200, N 61KF back in the air. I purchased her from the Insurance company
on a bid about two years ago. It had sustained enough damage to the landing gear
and fuselage from a hard landing, for them to total it. I replaced the tube
gear with Grove gear, and repaired the fuselage, plus lots of other odds and
ends, mostly just to satisfy myself.
I had never flown or even ridden in a Kitfox before buying this one. I must say
I am very pleased with how it performs.
I am looking forward to making it to some gatherings this Summer and Fall. Maybe
Steve will get his flyin at Grand Lake Saint Marys rescheduled soon. Im about
80 miles south of there at Red Stewart Airfield, near Waynesville Oh. I have
been on the List during the rebuild process, and would like to thank every one
for all the helpful info and entertainment!

I set mine so maximum flap just allows full aileron travel both ways.
With this setting I've never had a premature stall.

Speaking of Grand Lake, I'm going to fly in there on Wednesday,
weather willing, and try to hitch a ride down to Eldora Speedway for
the races there that night. No previous planning, no ticket, no
renting a car...just get up in the morning and go. What the hell,
you're only young once, and they can't jail you for trying to do
something on the spur of the moment.

Kevin, if you still have that 92 oct fuel on hand could you test it for alcohol
and let us know for sure if it does contain it?
I have been using 92 oct auto fuel for the past year and have had no problems.
My wing tank is from 1994 and has the white kreme sloshing inside. I do test
my fuel and have not found any alcohol. last fill up was two days ago. I use
Chevron and 76. I am in Ellensburg WA.

I carried out some flap tests a few years ago and gradually increased the
flap setting on approach from nil to full to see effects.
At full flap setting ie) handle up as far as it would go I didn't have any
problems with a premature stall but found that when I touched down I
couldn't get the tail top come down and I bounced along on the main gear a
few times with the tail high in the air. The aileron movement was a bit
restricted with the flaps full down.
Is their any chance that with full flaps you lifted off early and then
stalled the wing once you were out of ground effect?
I have used full flaps on floats and wheels Take off and landing with no
real problems however when I am landing I lift the flaps just before touch
down on a short field approach - serves two purposes as it gives you
better elevator authority once you lift the flaps and it also dumps lift
so that you can land really short.

Tom,
No doubt the fuel that you have been burning did not have ethanol in it
however I am told that all Washington fueling stations must have ethanol
blend in their tanks by July 1. We have no gas stations in our area now that
do not have ethanol in ALL of their fuels. Now what? Some minor exceptions
are the smaller stations that have not accepted deliveries in the last few
weeks but that will change with their next shipments.
I seem to recall that when the State of Washington was haggling over this
piece of legislation that some fuel was to be made available without ethanol
but all of the distributors that I have talked with seem to be oblivious to
anything about this. I think that it is because they do not want the hassle
of carrying another grade of fuel and most are not set up with enough tanks
and pumps to handle it.

It was the tank only. I flew the day the fuel was added and then the plane sat
for
a few days. The filters looked clear, the only bad stuff was coming out of the
tank drain.
Tom
I did not have to test it, the station owner confirmed it had "at least" 6% and
as
much as 10%. My plastic sump tool seemed soft from the fuel. By the reaction
of
the station owner and the damage to the tank I'm wondering if something is going
on
here and that maybe this wasn't normal premium auto fuel but a mixture stronger
than 10%. Is there a simple way to test the level?

At this point I'm going to have to disagree that the flap angle is what caused
you to stall. I've taken off with full flaps and done correctly the airplane
sort of just shoots up in the air and feels like it's level. You have to resist
the urge to pull back on the stick, just let it lift off on its own, you might
even have to push forward on the stick. the key here is NOT to lift off with
a bunch of up angle on the wings, that will stall you. If you are in a float
plane and want to get off sooner, you will need to cross control and lift one
of the floats out of the water as well as keeping in ground effect until air
speed allows for lifting off.

... what I am wondering is what they have in their tanks at the station. Because,
as I understand it, it is also fiberglass tanks. Norway will introduce 5% ethanol
in Mogas later this year. I asked Shell what they intended to do to protect
their own underground tank and ... no one could answer.
