Rad scoop pic look great guys.
Now the questions -- what did you gain or lose in speed and coolant temps ?
Did you seal the rad to the scoop? Makes a differance you know in cooling.
read my previous posts on cowl mods......... just look at that design how the
hot air from the engine dumps directly into the rad..........

One more thing that most do not consider is that Skystar chopped the Rotax exhaust
up and the 582s are likely to see 55 to 58 HP only not the 65 HP that the
582 is advertised as having.
IF you followed my older posts from last fall I did alot of experimenting with
the 582 exhaust. I gained HP !! with stock exhaust by lengthening the header
pipe and the 90 degree elbow. Only problem is that it is tight in there already
to keep that pipe enclosed.
I have also built some tuned pipes and they work even better. I have only flown
on wheels and skis with these pipes and not on floats yet. Hopefully floats
go on soon . MY 582 have over 480 hours now and never been apart since new
in June 2006. That being said it could blow apart on next flight as could
any engine or prop.

Lynn,
My Kitfox is located in my hanger at an airpark in Fl. I can fly it every
day if I want to but it is too hot now so I have escaped to my cabin in the
N.C. mountains for a week or so. No place to tow my Kitfox up here. We have
lots of mountains(ok, hills for you guys living in the Rockies) and very few
airports. When I do come up here with the airplane,I will fly it up. Besides,I
will fly it when I get back.I am not having much luck getting a hanger up
here. Like most of the US,hangers are at a premium!
Lowell , thanks for your input . I had not thought of letting the oil cool
then pumping it back into the tank prior to periods of non use. That should
slow the siphoning action a bit. I'll give it a shot
By the way I read an article in the defunct SkyStar magazine about the
siphoning effect in the Kitfox with the 912. It offered no solution other then
to
always check the oil and "burp" the tank. It too said the high oil tank
position was the problem. Wish we had a magazine like that still available with
"tips" & "techniques" but then I guess that's what this email form is for.
Thanks for the replies !

Hi all - my UK-built Kitfox Model II is still going through scrutiny by the
FAA and one of the things that has come up is that it cannot display the UK
registration markings now that it has N-number markings. That sounds simple
enough except that the letters are HUGE (see attached photo), on both sides
of the fuselage, and take up most of the underside of the port wing. And are
painted on, not decals.
The paint is in really good shape and I am not keen on re-painting the whole
thing. I proposed just "removing" the "G-" marking and coming up with a
clever reverse-acronym meaning for "BSMO" and the FAA seems ok with that "as
long as the markings cannot be mis-construed as a UK registered aircraft".
So my options appear to be - find a color match for the yellow and paint
over the "G-" in all 3 places, although a spray can of Rustoleum is the
level of my painting expertise. Another thought was to get 3 of those nifty
Kitfox logo decals and put them over the G-.
So my question to the listers is - where does one get large Kitfox logo
decals? And - anyone have any better idea(s)?

Subject: | Kitfox-II - Radiator Bracket Separation |
Guys,
I have an early Kitfox-II with a Rotax 582 with 275 hours. This morning
on post flight inspection, I found one of the radiator attachment
brackets had had separated from the radiator. Have any of you
experienced this kind of failure? I think I'll have to remove the
radiator and have the bracket either soldered or brazed back on to the
radiator. This heating process could introduce leaks elsewhere.
Another idea would be to install a clamp with rubber pads to hold the
radiator.
I'm open to your advice or suggestions...

I'm lucky enough to have a hangar 4 miles from home. After putting
the plane on the trailer last night, I had second thoughts about
having to untrailer it, fly for 4 days at the most, then load it up
again, and come home, untrailer it, and breathe a sigh of relief.
When I hear of guys who have to keep theirs at home and trailer it to
fly, I've got a lot of respect for their stick-to-it-ivness. The only
time I've had to trailer mine so far is to be weighed, and it rained
the whole 36 mile round-trip. Having to tape up the t'deck hole was a
bear! This weekend is supposed to clear, so maybe I'l get lucky.
I'll still tape the big hole shut, but I won't be quite so anal about
keeping the raindrops out, just the road dust or possible mist.
And if it wasn't for having to get a ride from the campsite to the
flying field each and every time I wanted to fly, I'd just fly the
plane up there and pitch a tent. When my daughter bailed out at the
last minute (from driving the motorhome up there), I decided to
trailer the plane, instead of leaving it home....after all, we are
celebrating "Independence" Day, aren't we? And I'm just stubborn
enough to be totally independent of others when I have to. : )
And for those that haven't trailered their Kitfoxs yet, it's not that
big a chore, and it can be done alone, but it sure is nice to not
have to do it....especially when the weather plays a part.

May I ask what kind of trailer you use Lynn? I have towed my Kitfox a few
miles using the towbar attachment but am reluctant to put too many miles on
the plane's tiny bearings. I plan to trailer it now on a 21ft car trailer,
with ramps and an electric winch to get it up to the platform. But I had the
trailer for other reasons, so I am wondering how other Kitfoxers "trailer"
their planes around.(?)

"The vibration ends after about twenty seconds or so."
Can we assume that the tires (both?) are rotating for 20 seconds and then
stop? If so does the vibration rate slow as the tires slow?

I would get that effect also. Try tapping the brakes to stop wheel rotation
after lift off to see if if affects it.

I have my wheels turn forever after take off, with them balanced it is smooth as
can be. I can remember my tires before balancing and I always had to hit the
brakes, what a pain. Now I just take off and forget about it.

I don't know if you guys have trim line auto decals in your neck of the
woods. Make your own grapohic and e-mail it as an attachment to your
nearest auto detailer and by the time you get to their office you should
have your decals. A single coat of yellow dope, the same kind as the base
colour will help hide the letters.
I'm thinking you could have decals made up of the Stars and Stripes to cover
the G-B That leaves you with SMO (Small Mighty & Ornery!)
I'm going to include a couple of pictures of decals I had made up for my
baby. I think the total cost was less thatn $10 CDN and that was when out
buck was worth a lot less than it is today.
This is what the decal I e-mailed to the graphics company looked like
(reduced in size a bit for the dial up guys)

Subject: Kitfox-List: Aircraft markings

That's the best suggestion yet Noel, and I see Aircraft Spruce has quite a
few at
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/flagplacards.php
I also found some actual Kitfox logo decals at
http://www.chiefaircraft.com/airsec/Aircraft/Decals/Logos.html that look
interesting.
Where would I get yellow dope to match what's on the plane? And black (black
should be easy to match!)?

I use full synthetic Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil, it is more expensive than the Rotax
Oil, and is on Rotax recommended list of oils. A good quality full synthetic
oil is far Superior and makes the engine last longer than the semisynthetic
Rotax oil. The only exception to this rule is if you use 100LL gasoline in your
Rotax. The full synthetic will not hold the lead in suspension like dinosaur
oil will. 100LL is not great for the 912's, you should not use it unless
there is no other alternative.
After getting some good advice from another memeber here, and a lot of research
on my own to confirm it, I use a Non Rotax oil filter. Using the wrong oil filter
will likely damage any engine. If I put the wrong number oil filter on
my Honda Civic , it will damage it, but that does not mean I can only use Honda
oil filters on my Honda, it just means I better use the right number filter
no matter which brand it is. The same is ture for my Rotax, I have to use the
correct number and a quality oil filter, but that NOT mean that all non Rotax
filters are wrong for the 912's. I dont care about price, but after research
of different racing sites, and people that know oil filters, I found the Rotax
oil filter is of less than average quality, there are far better oil filters
that you can use on your Rotax 912. Like anything in life, if you screw it
up, you can cause damage... If done correctly, you can protect your engine
far better than the Rotax oil filter does. If you would like to educate yourself
on oil filters, read this thread, and the links I posted in the 11th response
to the post.

You only need to know the brand of the finish on there now... If it is
PolyFibre then you can get the Polyfibre or Aerothane finish. If it is
Randolph then all you need is the butrate dope the same colour. Same thing
for Hi-Pec and most of the other finishes... The first thing to do is to
find out what is there now. The original owner or the guy you bought it
from may be able to help.
The Decals are opaque so they can be applied directly over the existing
finish without using any dope or paint. Heck you won't even need to sand
the finish to apply a decal. Check out the places that make graphics for
cars and or trucks.
I have used the decals to put registration markings on a couple of planes I
worked on. It is just too easy and the marks always go on straight and
square.
Noel
How about just tell the printers you need the white BTW that's close to
the original training colours.
