Steve,
I have a Kitfox 3 and last year, after maybe 900 landings, the single leaf broke.
I replaced it with two leafs and I feel quite happy.
What kind of tailwheel do you have? The Maule? The point is: the vertical axis
must be just a tiny bit tilted forward. That is the key to good tailhweel control.
But I don't understand why your wheel now won't free-castor. Have you checked
the unlocking mechanism?
Cheers,

Check rudder cable tension, tailwheel centering springs tension, and
possibly cable length. Could be that the new leaf spring is a bit longer or
shorter than the original, or is arced differently, effectively lengthening,
or shortening the distance from rudder pedal to rudder control horn.

That's great info Noel, and I'm giving that logo below some serious
consideration.
The guy I bought the airplane from doesn't know details about the paint and
the original builder is uncontactable. However my Owner's Manual specifies
"Stits Poly-Tone or Aero-Thane" and AircraftSpruce offers both finishes in a
variety (unfortunately!) of yellows. I have ordered their free Poly-Fiber
Color Chart and hope to make a safe match with that.
Thanks again for your help, I probably wouldn't have found this info without
it. And wish me luck with first-time spraying!

You only need to know the brand of the finish on there now... If it is
PolyFibre then you can get the Polyfibre or Aerothane finish. If it is
Randolph then all you need is the butrate dope the same colour. Same thing
for Hi-Pec and most of the other finishes... The first thing to do is to
find out what is there now. The original owner or the guy you bought it
from may be able to help.
The Decals are opaque so they can be applied directly over the existing
finish without using any dope or paint. Heck you won't even need to sand
the finish to apply a decal. Check out the places that make graphics for
cars and or trucks.
I have used the decals to put registration markings on a couple of planes I
worked on. It is just too easy and the marks always go on straight and
square.
Noel
How about just tell the printers you need the white BTW that's close to
the original training colours.

That's the best suggestion yet Noel, and I see Aircraft Spruce has quite a
few at
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/flagplacards.php
I also found some actual Kitfox logo decals at
http://www.chiefaircraft.com/airsec/Aircraft/Decals/Logos.html that look
interesting.
Where would I get yellow dope to match what's on the plane? And black (black
should be easy to match!)?

Subject: | Carb vent line install - Rotax 2 cycle |
On every other dual carb Rotax that I have ever seen, the vent hose has always
been a single tube connected to each carb with a few holes in the bottom. I was
looking at the set-up on my 582 while synchronizing the carbs, and on my aircraft
the two inside vent ports have a very short hose that is connecting the
two carbs, and then the two outside ports have long tubes that run down the firewall
to the bottom of the cowling. I assume this is to keep any fuel overflow
from hitting the exhaust, but seems a little different to me. Is this a common
installation, or just something that the original builder dreamed up? Any issues
with linking the two carbs together like that?

My Rotax 912-S has also done something like this. It is not to the point of running
on 3 cylinders, but every couple months I spin the prop cold by hand and
there is no compression on one cylinder... I start it up, it flys perfect, and
on the ground I have compression on all cylinders cold for the next several
weeks when I spin the prop. Its only every couple months that I spin the prop
and find no compression on one cylinder. I don't think its carbon though, as
my engine did this with less than 25 hours on it, and its never seen a drop
of 100LL

Subject: | Re: Tail wheel spring set up |
Look at the caster angle of the new setup versus the old setup. They
should be similar. In order for the tailwheel to caster (follow the
plane) a projected line drawn through the centerline of the pivot
must hit the ground ahead of the contact point of the wheel on the
ground. It sounds like you have done this, right? If that angle is
off, it could be that the new spring has too much arch in it...or too
little.
I'd check with the seller of the spring.

Subject: | Storage space in a Model 2 |
Is there any way to get some storage space in a Model 2? The most I have now
is a fanny pack (in the UK it was a "bum bag" and a "fanny" pack would be
considered unmentionably rude...) on the rear deck for some paperwork and a
few tools.
I know there is a storage bag for later models that fits behind the seats,
is there one for the model 2 or can the bag be made to fit?
I've also seen a "pod" on this list, it appears to mount under the fuselage
at the CG and looks like it will hold a few cubic feet of stuff. Where would
I find one of those?
Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated, in advance.

Could your engine have had the Greensky Adventures HACman system installed
at one time? If so, those 2 long vent lines would have been "T'd" together
and then passed thru the firewall to the HACman controller.

Subject: | Luggage/Cargo Bag FOR SALE |
For SALE: Luggage/Cargo Bag.
I want to sell the luggage/cargo bag that was originally installed in my Vixen
(Series 5). It is blue in color and is in excellent condition. I replaced it
with the large cargo bag a few months ago. This bag mounts (with Velcro) to
the top seat assembly tube and to the next horizontal support member that is about
14 aft of that. The floor of the bag is larger than the top. It is 18x18
and is made of 1/8 Masonite. It also has the triangle shaped wings on each
side to create the smaller size side pockets. All Velcro is in excellent condition
and there are no known defects in the bag.
I do not know if this was the original cargo bag for the Vixen or not. I havent
looked very close, but it looks like it would fit a Model IV and be more appropriate
to size and capacity. I have noted the baggage sack for the Model IV
sells for $195 and the 5-7 is $295 (which is what I paid for the new large bag).
I would recommend shipping without the wood floor. With just the bag it would
make a small package for shipping. Also, I would suggest going back with Luan
plywood because it would be lighter and warp less than the original Masonite
floor. However, I will ship according to the buyers request. Feel free to ask
any questions.
I am asking $100 firm plus actual shipping costs.
Thanks!

My M2 has a cargo bag which may be the same that Bob's selling. I
wouldn't know for sure. It hangs to a triange frame opening behind the
seats and seems to match Bob's description. I think you could get a few
dimensions and check if it might work or contact John McBean for
confirmation.

Hi Travis - yes I am interested and the price is ok, I need to just confirm the
measurements first to see if it will fit. From your posting below it sounds like
it is 14" deep at the top and 18" square at the bottom? Do you have any pix?

prevent a bag unless the bag was in 2 sections. Also the flaperon control tubes
move through that area when the wings fold so I assume the bag would need
to be removed before folding.
Has anyone else put a storage bag in a model 1, 2 or 3? I know the McBeans sell
2 bags but neither are for anything pre-model IV.

(Series 5). It is blue in color and is in excellent condition. I replaced
it with the large cargo bag a few months ago. This bag mounts (with Velcro) to
the top seat assembly tube and to the next horizontal support member that is
about 14 aft of that. The floor of the bag is larger than the top. It is 18x18
and is made of 1/8 Masonite. It also has the triangle shaped wings on each
side to create the smaller size side pockets. All Velcro is in excellent condition
and there are no known defects in the bag.

looked very close, but it looks like it would fit a Model IV and be more appropriate
to size and capacity. I have noted the baggage sack for the Model
IV sells for $195 and the 5-7 is $295 (which is what I paid for the new large
bag).

make a small package for shipping. Also, I would suggest going back with Luan
plywood because it would be lighter and warp less than the original Masonite
floor. However, I will ship according to the buyers request. Feel free to
ask any questions.

If the angle is the only thing different, (meaning you swapped the
entire tailwheel assembly from one to the other,) that has to be the
reason. The pivot should be nearly vertical, with the top slightly
behind the bottom so the wheel doesn't shimmy. I'm guessing yours has
the top WAY behind the bottom, so the wheel wants to flop sideways.
That would be bad. If your pivot angle looks wrong, have a spring
shop bend it for you to the right angle.

As Marco said, this looks like a partial HACman setup. It could also
be someone's bright idea to get the vent out of the engine
compartment to avoid fire danger. Unfortunately I'm told it's a bad
idea, as it can change the relative pressure between the intake
manifold and the float chamber, the pressure differential that
controls mixture. Rotax has very specific instructions not to change
the vent lines for this reason. The HACman system changes it based on
extensive testing and the ability to manually adjust the mixture.

Bob,
I have a bag installed on my Model II; it's not factory, I made it myself. If
you know the depth you're looking for and the floor size that you want (mine is
14" square if my memory works well) you can measure where you want it to attach
within the frame work behind the seat and sketch it up. Use the sketch to
determine the size and shape of the panels then cut and sew. I used black duck
cloth for the bag and some shoe laces for attaching at the front (seat end)
and velcro for the back (aft end) all from the fabric store. It's not awesome
but does well for holding a spare quart of oil, a few tools and documents.
My description isn't the best but if you're interested in photos let me know,
I'll take a few next time I'm at the hanger. Yes, it needs to be removed for
the wings to fold.

You most definitely do not want to make those vent lines long or route them out
of the engine compartment ! I know of one case where the builder ran the carburetor
vent lines out the bottom of the plane. The engine wanted to quit on
climbout everytime he started to gain some airspeed, not a good thing to have
happen on a first flight. It almost ended in disaster.
