The previous owner installed the plastic (fibreglass??) tanks after Denny replaced
the aluminum ones for free. In fact I still have a set of new aluminum tanks
which came with the plane.

The tanks were installed by the previous builder in 1994. I will be ready for
test flying in early spring 09. Should I be worried; ie; should I borascope
the tanks???

My wing tanks came with the kit in 1994. They are sloshed with the white Kreem
and so far no problems. The kreem slosh appears to be thin and bonded tight
to the surface in the tanks.
There was a note attached to the tanks from the factory that stated the Kreem coating
would protect the fiberglass tanks from fuel additives.
When some problems with the Kreem flaking off surfaced, the factory recommended
builders visually inspect the coating in their tanks by shining a flash light
into the filler opening to look for loose kreem and gently probing the kreem
coating with a screw driver to determine if it was secure.
I would say a borescope would be an excellent way to do this inspection.

The S5 I helped build first flew a couple of hours a year or so ago - with another
pilot - but then engine problems, work and life got in the way.
This week, all problems resolved, I flew it for the first time and yes, it was
like a first solo. Exhilarating : :D It has the 912S and Grove gear - see attachment.
I have no choice but to do the test flying (50 hours required here) from a narrow
paved runway so I am a bit nervous about the ground behaviour. The plane tracks
straight but is very sensitive to rudder pedal input and quickly develops
a swing. The first landing was done with very tight spring tension in the springs
between rudder and tail wheel and I felt this was just too direct to be safe.
I've now put in an extra link and have some slack in the springs and chain
link. It feels better but I will need a few more landings to become confident.
It's a maule tail wheel by the way.
Any tips on tail wheel steering spring tension?

Assuming the rules in Norway and the rest of Northern Europe allow a person
to return to flying after treatment for heart disease it would be nice to
think Michel would be back to the cockpit ASAP. On the other hand I support
him on his decision whatever it may be. Like they say you never know
another man until you walk a mile in his mukluks. Either way I hope he
stays active here.

Hi Michel
I'm very sorry to hear that, at least it happened when you were not airborne and
are therefore still with us today to tell the tale.
All is not lost. While I would definitely take the route of having a safety pilot
for the near future for obvious reasons, there may be some hope for your flying
future. I think that Norway is a full EASA member and therefore you fly under
the JARs, right?
There is a NPA (Notice of Proposed Amendment) to change the license system in Europe.
It will introduce an LPL (Leisure Pilots License) category into FCL1 which
may carry some reduced privileges but also will have a reduced medical requirement
(LPL medical instead of a Class 2), and this can be issued by a GP if
allowed by the local authority. This is a bit similar to the Sport Pilot system
now in the US.
The NPAs can be viewed here:
Licensing requirements
Medical requirements (The LPL requirements are in Section 3 MED.B.090 starting
on page 18 )

Michael,
Sorry to hear about the cardiac problems. You will feel much better after your
ticker is regulated with the pacemaker! I've always said....that boating is
more dangerous than flying!! [Laughing] Our prayers are extended on your behalf
to the real PIC. Keep the faith!

Dick....
Just leave it to you to fly your plane with not much more than a 2x4 for a prop!
:D
I don't have any real issues with flying in rain...as long as I can see through
it! My Prince Prop is wood core with Kevlar coating and leading edge protection.
This past Saturday I got sort of trapped and had to fly about 15 miles in
a pouring rain...trying to beat the level 5 thunderstorm that was quickly approaching
our airport.
I carry a short roll of poly tape on the plane. If I know I will be encountering
rain, I will apply equal strips to each blade prior to take off...just for
the extra protection. The rain will pit the epoxy leading edge if flying fast
or high RPM. I usually try to throttle back when possible. Also...should the
tape decide to let go in flight...it makes one heck of a racket! [Shocked]
As long as you know what it is...it's not too bad!
Dick...I have also used the good ol electrical tape before. It will work...unless
it's the really cheap tape! :)

you need a light sport DAR that knows what he is doing.
you only need the manufactures compliance statement for LSA certification.
to go experimental light sport you only need to show registration prior to jan
31 08 and have the exemption letter.
contact Jay Kitchens Manager of FAA AFS 640 jay.kitchens@faa.gov
ask him for the contact info for Van Stumpner he is in AFS 640 and teaches
the light sport DAR class.
see if that helps

Travis,
That looks really hairy [Shocked] What kind of ride did you get flying through
the rain and the outer part of that monster storm ?
