Darin, you make me blush so much that my new pacemaker stands out like a white
spot on my chest! :-)
I went flying as a passenger with my son, yesterday. Again I tested carefuly the
plane: slight pressure on the right pedal to keep the ball in the center, level
flight and cruise speed. Release the stick ... the plane slowly moves nose
up and bank right.
The thing is: the measured angles at root and tip are exactly symmetrical and I
am not sure it would be wise to change the wash-out. As I wrote earlier, I had
a small tab bent down on the root of the left flaperon and it helped but ...
I lost it. I am thinking to put a new one but ... nobody commented that practice
so, ... do you have any other suggestion, guys? Should I try a tab on the
rudder instead?
The thing is; this is only a tiny problem when I fly alone (whenever or if I get
back my license!) and I want for example open a bottle of water using both hands.
Previously I pressed the stick with my right leg but it would feel better
if I could fly hands free for a short while.
Cheers,
Michel Verheughe

Do you have *any* form of elevator trim control? Either a ground-
bendable mechanical trim tab or servo-controlled trim tab? That would
be a way to control the nose up movement, and a similar trim tab on
the rudder would allow you to control the right banking tendency. If
you have both of those, you'll be able to pull a cork from a bottle
of wine with both hands AND cut the cheese as well. : ) (I'd wait
until on the ground before consuming any of the wine, however)
The way I understand it, the ground-adjustable trim tabs only work at
a specific airspeed...any faster or slower (within reason) than what
you have set if for, and it doesn't correct as much, or it corrects
too much....nothing very radical, just slight.
I can fly my plane hands off for several minutes at a time after
setting the elevator trim (electric) if the wind isn't too great.

Hello Lynn and Dan,
Well, I don't have any elevator trim but I trim pitch with the flaps handle whenever
I feel for it. The plane is balanced to climb at full throttle and sink
at idle. With the flaps handle, I can get it to fly level at cruise speed.
If I use the flap and keep level, whenever I free the stick, it still turns slightly
right.
The need for right pedal is, I think, normal due to the propeller's torque. I need
a substential push when I take off and can release it entirely on a descent
at idle.
So far, I think the plane is well balanced as it is. If I put a tab on the elevator,
... I risk to have problem to do a three-points landing since that's the
reason I never land with flaps on. If I put a tab on the rudder ... I risk to
need left pedal when idling down a descent. My last idea is then to put a corrective
tab to the flaperon. Doesn't it make sense?
Cheers,

You are correct when on climbout (P-factor)...but if you need to keep your right
foot in it in straight and level flight, then in my opinion, the rudder tab
could help with the yaw. As for your pitch problem, I'm not familiar enough
with the model 7 to help. On my IV I have 3 vertical attachment points for the
leading edge of the HZ Stab. I might take a look at.

Just what the title says. I am tired of the tower asking me to repeat, or telling
me I am unreadable due to the loud "buzzing" noise in the back ground. I
have checked it out with my brother flying and me listening in on my hand held
and the "buzzing" is the cockpit noise of the dang 2 stroke, not an electrical
or interference noise.
We are currently running a JHP-520 hand held, Flight com 5DX head sets and have
tried sigtronix, flight com and PSE Aerocom II. I have tried david clark headsets
as well and still have the dang 2 stroke scream. I know alot of guys are
using something that works. I plugged the headset directly into the radio and
it was worse. It seems that the PSE intercom has worked best, but still leaves
alot to be desired.
Dave, I noticed in your videos that you dont have the loud 2 stoke scream in the
back ground on your transmissions so what set up are you using?
I am wanting to order what ever it takes for my plane so I can fly direct over
the tower to my favorite destination and not annoy the tower with crappy transmission's.
Thanks

I'm happy with my Lynx Micro headsets and radio interface -
http://www.lynx-avionics.com/English_Site/E_Site_Index/e_frame_set.html.
They ain't cheap but the noise cancelling electret microphones + built-in
speech processor do the job pretty well, they are designed for use in open
cockpit (UK) ultralights where the 582 is almost a headrest and absolutely
nothing between you and the engine. Or you and the wind. Or you and the
ground! And my KF2 with 582 can *not* be flown without ear protection, the
db level can be disorienting otherwise.
They also have many configurations from single headset noise protection to
multiple headsets fully integrated into your radio system(s). Even helmets.

I borrowed a trick from the open cockpit fraternity. I
turned down the mic gain, (available internally on my Icom A200,) and
spoke louder. This raises the signal/noise and renders my speech much
more legible. My system is the cheap Lightspeed headset, Icom A200
com, and SP400 intercom.

One more thing. It's always good to check the simple things.
Make sure your mic's turned around the right way. One side has the
noise cancelling mic and the other the voice mic. If they're turned
around, (it's easy to do,) your signal / noise goes right into the toilet.

Len,
I don't know for certain about the handheld you are using, but every damn
handheld I've tried in an airplane has had some problems with many different
things. I've never used an aviation handheld in the cockpit, but I've tried
a few different amateur radio handhelds, and the biggest problem I've
encountered with them is that the internal mic is NOT disconnected when an
external mic is plugged in resulting two mics in parallel, 1/2 the impedance
needed, and some draw down on mic voltage circuitry. The internal mics I've
dealt with ARE NOT directional mics, nor are they noise cancelling They
didn't work worth a flip out of the box. Cutting the connections on the
circuit boards at the internal mic solved most of the problem, and turning
the mic gain pot down also helped.

Are you using the rubber ducky antenna attached to your handheld mounted on
your dash? Try an external antenna mounted back in the rear of the plane.
Way better reception and less noise.

I have tried both ways. It was actually better using the rubber ducky than the
external in terms of the tower hearing me. I have a feeling that the big part
is the intercom not being a "high noise" intercom. I looked up the SPA-400
that Guy has and saw the 400N for high noise. Looks like I may be ordering one
of those.

Subject: | Used Rudder Torque Tubes...For Sale/Trade |
I just replaced the rudder torque tubes on my KF IV (that I purchased a couple
of months ago) and was wondering if anybody has any interest in the ones I took
out. They are the older style without the "gussets" and are red powder coated.
The right tube has a bend in the vertical rudder upright (pilot's side that
the brake pedal attaches to) at the weld where it attaches to the main tube.
The right brake wasn't holding very well and I believe the owner/builder bent
it some with excessive pressure when he was delivering it to me and then I continued
the process. Anyway, I would think that it is repairable and the left
tube appears to be fine. The plane was completed in 2001 and has only flown
about 88 hrs. I'm not a builder or welder so I opted to buy new from Kitfox and
wouldn't mind recouping some of my cost in cash or trade, if someone could use
these. If interested, send me an e-mail to pperryrph@sbcglobal.net, and by
the way, thanks to all that post and maintain this site as I have been able to
gain a bunch of valuable info as a new KF owner...Paul P.
