Subject: | Trim tab and flaps |
I've seen a lot of discussions on this list about using the flaperons for
trim and the pros and cons of using "flaps"; and most don't seem to apply to
my UK built Model 2. My original training was in the world of spam cans,
Pipers mostly, so I thought nothing of my Kitfox's standard trim and flap
controls - a continuously variable trim "wheel" and 3 notches for flaps.
On reviewing build documents I found dozens of PFA (UK version of EAA)
modifications to the original kit and it seems like the UK Kitfoxes are
built to a very different standard than the original Denney US kit.
Anyway - I have attached pics of my trim tab and trim & flap "console" -
does anyone else have a similar setup? I use mine all the time and wouldn't
want to be without it!

Bob,
Sort of like deja Vu all over again. When I built my first IV, I needed a
trim tab as that was what I was used to as well. I opted for the Speedster
elevator. I like your mod and it seems like a neat set-up. Mine will be
similar, but electric like the original with a switch on the top of the
stick. I think that lots of the low cruise speeds on the early Kitfoxes are
due in large part to the use of flaps for trim - lots of drag.

Subject: | Re: Lynn's Ignition |
Gary and Jose-
I'm in the process of installing the Electroair Direct Fire Ignition
System (www.electroair.net/) as we speak (so to speak)....it's a
really impressive system, with very professional-looking harnesses,
attachments, terminals, spark plug wires, etc. Because this is a
prototype for the Jabiru using a crankshaft trigger wheel, I'm having
to make my own brackets to mount the two magnetic pickups. Ordinarily
on a Jabiru, they would supply a magneto timing housing (MTH) to
replace one of the distributors, and the installation would be a lot
simpler. Because I wanted to eliminate altogether the distributors,
caps and rotors, as well as the shafts and gears that drive the dist
shafts, I asked them to design a system that would use their
crankshaft trigger wheel and utilize two magnetic pickups instead of
their normal one, as used on other engines. This will involve me
making the brackets, positioning the two pickups a certain distance
apart, and then attaching them onto my home made brackets, the job
will take a little longer. Based on my success with the building,
they will design a bracket that they will build and then market as
part of an alternate way to go with the Jabiru ignition kit.
No, Jose, I haven't written much (yet) about this system on the
jabiruengines, Yahoo list, because I really just got into installing
it. I'll post over there and on the Matronics Jabiru engines list
when I know more.
Right now I'm making a mounting plate for the in-cabin controllers,
and I need to go get a larger hole saw for lightening holes. Next
will come the mounting brackets for the coils, which will get mounted
onto the firewall. Then I'll go after the pickup-mounting brackets. I
started with the Kitfox-mounted stuff first, because those were the
hardest to access...I decided to remove my glare shield to enable
easier access to the back of the instrument panel (for my system, 4
new breakers will be installed), and after the airplane-mounted stuff
is installed I'll start on the Jabiru engine-related stuff. I'll keep
track of my time and report back to them so they can have some idea
of whether or not this system takes more time than their other,
already-in-the-field-and-proven ignition kits.

Subject: | Matco WHLB5 brakes |
I have the old Matco WHLB5 brakes which never worked very well on an 8 inch wheel
that was made by kitfox. Brakes where leaking and Matco suggested changing
the O-rings (2-222 O-ring), which solved the leak.
They also suggested changing the brake line to 1/8 inch OD brake line for better
braking.
I replaced the brake line to 1/8 inch OD and have noticed a noticeable difference
in braking. I would say a 30% increase.
Below is from Matco:
It is a matter of brake pressure. The brake is rated at 450 psi. If you are not
getting 450 psi to the caliper, you are not getting the rated torque. The issue
is usually one of pedal geometry. The early KitFox had two issues. The geometry
was low (we recommend at least 2.5 to 1 mechanical advantage). The second
is having the master cylinder connect above the pivot point of the toe brake.
The result of this is that the mechanical advantage gets worse as the cylinder
is stroked. This type of geometry can be made to work as long as the mechanical
advantage starts out higher so that it is still at 2.5 to 1 when the cylinder
is in the loaded position. The early Kitfox, Avid, and Lancairs all had this
type of geometry.
There is a SKIDS Technical Comic on our website that talks about pedal geometry and has links to more detail including a discussion of mechanical advantage with drawings. The comic is at http://www.carttonic.com/files/file_download.php?fi_id=39363
The best way to know for sure is to measure the pressure at the brake with a pressure
gauge. You will likely find that you are not getting more than 300 psi
or so. It is the equivalent of taking off at 60 percent throttle on the engine.
The brake will give more torque above 450 psi but it is less linear above that
value. The nylon lines should be fine as long as they have a 450 psi working
pressure and at least a 1500 psi burst. Since you also have an issue with the
amount of volume used (your pedal geometry worsens with stroke and you will
have less stroke with less volume) you may find that smaller diameter lines are
helpful. We have recently begun using 1/8 inch OD line for our hand master cylinders
as they are low volume systems. It is beneficial for that case. We have
also found it easier to bleed a 1/8 line free of air.

Night and day difference! the wide gear is MUCH better, and with it being taller,
you can get in the air quicker and land slower.
Kitfox is coming out with a wider and taller gear that has PA-18 looks to it.
No more bungies from what I saw. I would be very tempted to get that gear if
I had not allready bought the wide gear for mine from Airdale.

I just received decals that I ordered online a few days ago, they are the

also has the fox logo in color and so do I on the tail of my KF2.
I could photograph either decal or send you the link to the supplier, let me

Paul,

There are 3 Kitfox decals with low-res (ie unusable) pictures. I received
the decals quickly and they are good quality at a cheap price.

Paul,
I just received decals that I ordered online a few days ago, they are the
stylized Kitfox name in black lettering and are 5x12 inches. The company
also has the fox logo in color and so do I on the tail of my KF2.
I could photograph either decal or send you the link to the supplier, let me
know if that helps.

yeah and I am the one that told you where to get the rebuild kit lol...
We had ordered a rebuild kit, but it had not come in yet and I had pulled them
apart and cleaned them up. I figured what the heck, it seems to be working ok
in the garage...... We now have 4 rebuild kits on hand.

What goes around comes around hey Leonard?<g> Especially with a squishy left
brake at 10mph!
I am rebuilding mine tonight in fact - note that the plug *must* be attached
with a special adhesive - "Black Max" Loctite 380, not available in your
average hardware store. I managed to get a tiny tube at an affordable price
on the Net - normal 1 oz bottles go for about $28 I think I remember, which
is a lot to spend for the few drops required!

Subject: | Re: gsc props changing pitch in flight |
Ok, now some of you guys are scaring me. Putting paper inside the hub
or spraying clearcoat on blade roots to tighten them seems a bit
uncertain to me when there is another, structurally-sound solution.
Plastic and wood are structural materials that have known compression,
wear, and weathering characteristics. Paper and clearcoat don't each
possess all three characteristics predictably.
After 100 hours on my 66" three-blade GSC prop, I machined the hubs
by 0.020" to compensate for a reduced gap. The original gap had been
"used up" in the first 100 hours through a number of re-torque cycles
for experimental pitch adjustments. Since then, I've put an additional
225 hours on the prop.
I do two things that I consider vital to the GSC prop: each preflight
includes checking the blades for security in the hub, plus I re-retorque
the bolts every spring and fall. These are two things I learned to do
after letting the blade sit, torqued to spec, for two years before my
first engine run-up - it was quickly evident something was wrong. Thus,
I realized very early on to not take this prop, or any other prop, for
granted.
I am associated with a kitplane that had used a three-blade Ivoprop
bolted to an O-540. One morning while we were preparing for a flight,
the owner's cell phone rang. An owner of a like-equipped aircraft called
to warn that his prop had just thrown a blade during a ground run and
resulted in the wrecking of 1/3 of the airframe. Weeks later the blade
was found a quarter-mile away. In that design, now obsolete, the blades
were expected to be retained by the shear-strength of two bolts plus a
flat plate-clamping force but the bolt-holes ripped through. Ivoprop
responsibly recalled them.
Certainly the fine folks at GSC have a liability to protect by
invoking a 5yr/500 hour lifetime policy. However, it if weren't for this
forum, I'd have never known about this limitation.
I will propose that a rotted GSC blade root will not torque properly
and thus would allow the hub gap to be immediately reduced to zero
around that blade. I do NOT believe the use of shims of any kind should
be used because they could either become compressed, thus loosening
again unpredictably. Or if material denser than paper or clearcoat were
used, I could imagine stress-risers developing on the hub and/or roots.
I DO believe that modestly machining material from the gap area can
be effective and safe. My opinion is that the hub, as shipped from GSC,
was gapped a little less than necessary for MY particular prop. However,
I will not machine mine again should the gap reduce further, nor would I
machine more than 0.020" from the gap.
