I was advised to use 6400 to get off the water with floats...on a GSC tec 7 prop. That worked but what really worked well was the Ivo IFA that replaced the GSC ( Expired). I needed a full 6800 rpm for lift off with the floats but it sure slowed down the cruise speed. Noel From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of fox5flyer Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 4:35 PM Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Warp Drive Angle I agree with Brian. That is good advice, IMO. Not only does it give the 582 a better cruise (who needs to get off the ground in 100 feet anyway), better fuel consumption, and also it keeps a better load on the engine so that EGTs are more manageable. Gerry, at Greensky Adventures, an old Rotax guru gave me the same advice to use 5800 static. Worked for me and there was no more screwing around. Deke Morisse Mikado Michigan S5/Subaru/CAP 397+ TT "The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress." - Joseph Joubert Hi Ted Static is "not moving". When your plane is tied down (static) your prop and engine have to work harder because all the air is being pulled through the prop. When your plane is moving forward (flying) the engine has less work to do because less air is being pulled across the blades. Less work at the same power setting means higher rpm. So, if you are over the redline when static, once you start flying you are not in a good position. Your prop is not set course enough to pull your plane through the air. I used to set my 582 at 5800rpm static which translated to ~6250rpm in level flight. I was looking for more cruise speed so I preferred a course setting. The web site below tells how to use the warp drive protractor to set your pitch. http://www.warpdriveprops.com/protractor.html Hope this helps Brian _____ From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Earnest & Bonnie Jacques Sent: September 23, 2008 10:58 AM Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Warp Drive Angle Thanks for the question. Since I am new to building and to Kitfoxes, I didn't know I was to do that. Actually, what is "static". Yes it does go over the redline when on the ground. I would have thought the AP would have set that properly, but I guess not. Please explain how to do that and get the angle right. Thanks. He could have put the shot in plastic bags inside the box... That way if he wanted to move the weight forward he could stow it in a pod or under/on a seat. Lots of opportunities there as long as the bag was secured. The 206 JetRanger sometimes will carry a lead strap in the luggage compartment. That lead strap is attached to the fornt of the right skid if the pilot is less than a specific weight. If the same pilot is carrying passengers or a load the ballast weight can sit in the cargo compartment. I think they typically weighed 20 lb. It was part of the equipment list, but was exchanged for baggage when going on long trips. I don't know what he did if he wanted to do come exporing once there, but it is one idea that has been used. I welded up a ballast box which is attached to the aiframe tubing back by the trim actuator, and I keep 10 lb.s of lead in it, along with a Odyssey PC-680 battery. I have an IO-240B. This get's my balance where the plane handles very nicely and I never have problems with elevator authority. Does the same thing apply to the horizontal? Gap seal - anything that prevents flow from the high to low pressure side of the airfoil. Some use close tolerance fiberglass structures; others, like me, use clear tape from the top of one surface to the bottom of the other. It looks fine if done carefully and replaced occasionally. It can be done on the vertical and horizontal stabilizer. When I did mine I went from full flaps giving full up elevator at touchdown on a three-point to full flaps giving probably 75% up elevator at touchdown- a significant improvement. I wouldn't shine... Most heat is transferred through black... That's heat in and heat out... if you paint it flat black it will help dissipate heat. I would use a zinc based primer, I think zinc phospate is the only one now available with a high temperature finish coat paint. You don't need the high temperature resistance but the continual warm up and cool down cycle might cause checking and eventual cracking. If they are easily removable, maybe consider getting them powder coated. That would enable you to get a very nice shine and long life durability. Black is the best radiative color but the surface area is so small, the heat loss differential based on color will be neglible. So powder coating to match your paint scheme on the plane would look real sharp to my eye. -- Paul A. Franz, P.E. PAF Consulting Engineers Office 425.440.9505 Cell 425.241.1618
