Speaking of snow, now that my engine is working like a charm, it's time to get back to thinking about a different design for snow skis for my plane. My old ones have a section of ski right behind the wheel, which collects snow. I also feel that the wheel penetrates the ski too far...about 2". This was what I thought was correct, but in seeing other style skis, I've decided to make a new set with less penetration, and no ski area right behind the wheel. This will allow for less snow buildup behind the wheel...nothing there for snow to build up on...and having the wheel penetrate less allows for less drag in the snow. What got me concerned, was having a problem getting out of 9 inches of snow last year. I finally got it up "on step", but it ate up a bunch of runway. I also had to raise the plane to slide the skis under the wheels (one at a time), and my new design (borrowed from the others I've seen) will allow for installation without raising the plane. So you see, Gary, there is some benefit to keeping that snow shovel close at hand. : ) Lynn Matteson Kitfox IV Speedster Jabiru 2200, 579.1hrs Sensenich 62x46 flying again (17 hrs) after rebuild, and new Electroair direct-fire ignition system On Oct 22, 2008, at 7:52 PM, gary.algate@sandvik.com wrote: > > Damn and here's me sitting in my office looking at the blue skies > and perfectly still leaves !!!!! > > I envy you > > Gary > > Gary Algate > SMC, Exploration > Office Phone: +61 8 8276 7655 > > > This e-mail is confidential and it is intended only for the > addressees. A quick trip to the local hobby or craft store and you should be able to pick up some balsa wood blocks. We roughed em in with a band saw, then rounded them out on a belt sander. A quick go around with 220 grit and a hand block sander, seal with epoxy primer, another quick sanding and then top coat to match the plane. We glued them in with T88 or use structural adhesive. Looks like new and will outlast the foam with only maybe an once weight penalty.. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 IVO IFA Full Lotus 1260 95% complete Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=210054#210054 ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 09:39:59 PM PST US Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Electroair direct fire ignition system in a Jabiru 2200/snow skis From: gary.algate@sandvik.com I must admit this was my first winter without snow for 16 years.
