Subject: | Re: 582 Overhaul Results |
I used Pennzoil and Chevron both air cooled oils. I think that the hrs is not
a big factor as much as the calender time. The parts were new, except for some
main outer bearing corrosion and a inner race/ball bearing cage was cracked,
but intact. I think it was a good time for me, I wouldn't want to guess how
much longer it would have gone. My seals, which many people would say is the
reason to check the engine were quite good - just starting to show signs of deterioration,
but no "guck" weeping yet. I flew short time, but frequently, averaging
once a week all year.

And if you do that, you'll have just lost a lot of potential buyers
in the Sport Pilot category...IF you should ever decide to sell the
plane.

I'm not sure if epoxy would stick to the brass, would it? Maybe scuff
it up real good, or better yet, chuck it up in a lathe and knurl the
outside of the threaded area, then epoxy in place. That would
certainly make enough of a "bitable surface" for epoxy adherence.
As far as getting it right down to the bottom of the tank, remember
this is only for a sight gauge, so not being able to visibly read the
very last drop of fuel would be a good thing...you'd be landing for a
fill-up before you got into an emergency situation (said the guy who
flies with one wing low so the other can feed his header tank, and
thereby make it to the next stop) : )

I haven't thought about gluing with Proseal, but have seen it used to
*seal* a fuel tank....one of the guys at our EAA chapter is building
a plane and had so many leaking issues with his tank that when he
finally got it to seal using (a LOT of) Proseal, he said he was gonna
call the factory and tell them that they could now lay off the second
shift. : )

Subject: | My Kitfox hit my car. What to look for damage wise? |
Ya know, if it wern't for bad luck I, I would have no luck at all.
So I got all done with the starter problems, and am getting set up with my instructor.
I had pulled the plane out of the garage, covered it up with a tarp,
and put blocks under the tires, thinking it would be OK for a few days till I
could get it on the trailer and take it down to the airport.
This afternoon we were having bad winds, gusting 40-50MPH. The plane was parked
in the driveway facing north/south. Apparently the wind caught it just right
and swung it 90* to west/east. When it did this, it hit my wives van. From
the scuff and paint marks it looks like the tail rode right up over the hood,
up to the windshield and partway back down.
The places that I know it hit were the horizontal stabilizer, the wing strut, and
two places along the bottom.
When I got out there to look the situation over, the horz. stab. was still up on
the hood of the van. It was pushed up about 1 to 1 1/2" more than normal.
I pulled the van back, and it came down into the normal position.
Looking it all over, the only real damage I found was a hole in the fabric, where
one of the bungie ties holding the tarp down, let loose.
The horiz. stab seems to be OK. There are no wrinkles in the fabric, and nothing
seems to be permanently bent. The struts seem to be OK on both sides, no cracks
or bends. The attachment points seem fine. If I push up good on the stab,
from the end, it seems to have about 1/2" of movement. The opposite side
moves down about the same. Never having done this before, I am not sure how much
movement there should be, but it seems about normal to me.
The wing strut seems OK, no dents or bends, just a couple of scuffs. I have not
unfolded the wings yet, but I don't anticipate any problems from what I have
seen.
The bottom edge has 2 scuff marks where it hit the bumper, but again, it was squarely
on the tube, and nothing seems bent, and no loose or wrinkled fabric.
Is there any place else I should check. Any weak points that may be susceptible
in an incident like this?

Do you have the type of ignition which has key positions for start, run, and
left and right mag and off?? If so then disconnect the battery and put an
ohm meter on the wire which was shorted and follow the short towards the
switch ---- try the different positions, does the short disappear?? If so
then find which position it reappears and follow that wire till you locate
the short. There is also a ground connection on the switch --- per chance
you did not in error hook this to the positive side of the battery?? If you
did then you will get an instant melt down.
Give us a few more clues to the number of wires on the battery and the type
of ignition control (key operated, single toggle or double toggle??)
