I used the serial number that is stamped on the metal plate on the
plane. I filled out the proper form...can't recall what form that was
right now, but it is part of the "package" that the FSDO sent me when
I requested a "registration package." You might ask the EAA about
the "misc. parts" or "incomplete kit" method, or simply ask the
FAA...it certainly worked for me. After all, there are people who
build from scratch, and they have been able to register their aircraft.
Now that I'm thinking about it, it seems like "incomplete kit" is
sticking in my brain for some reason. Part of my thinking about the
miscellaneous parts thing is, if some of your kit is missing, you
have an incomplete kit, therefore your plane is not a "kitbuilt"
plane, it is built from miscellaneous parts.
Incidentally, in looking for copies of the paperwork that I sent
in...and could not find, because I probably never made any...I found
the pink copy of the "AC Form 8050-1" (Aircraft Registration
Application) and printed boldly across the whole thing is the
message: "OPERATIONS OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES ARE PROHIBITED BY
LAW".....for what it's worth.

Another part of my "paper trail" was a receipt from Skystar Aircraft
Corp. dated Sept 20, 2002, for a kit sold Jan 31, 1994. This was
another reason for me to think this paper trail is so convoluted with
receipts dated 8 years down the road, and widows, executors, lawyers,
etc, that I went the "miscellaneous parts" route.

In addition there are spherical bolts that are not snug in their fittings so
I need to order a bunch of washers to tighten everything up. Can anyone go check
and tell me how much they can wiggle one flaperon control tube when the other
one is held in place? I have it down to less then 1/16" and looking at the
system I just don't believe it can get much better then that.
james, My kitfox has the the wings folded so the flaperons are disconnected right
now. Pulling up and down on both flaperon control tubes I can feel a slight
amount of slop but it is not enough to measure. I actually can't see the movement
just feet it slightly. Now this is a Classic 4 so the comparison may be
apples to oranges.
You mention spherical bolts. Is that another name for rod ends? If so, I don't
exactly follow how a sloppy one could be tightened up by adding washers. The
control rods do need to rotate back and forth slightly in the attachments.
Don't try to use washers to stop the rotation of the double rod end attachment
between the stick and the aileron bell crank. It needs to rotate quite a bit
as the stick moves fore and aft. A fellow rebuilt a kitfox a while back and that
attachment broke during a test flight. I suspect that connection was installed
with too much limit in the rotation. He landed safely by the way, using
rudder to turn.

Interesting. What authority does the United States have to say what
can be done outside of its jurisdiction? Where's a lawyer when you
need one? :-)

I believe there was/is some sort of bulletin on that bolt as they've been
known to fail. I'm pretty sure it was recommended to renew that bolt at
each annual.
As for the spherical bolt statement, he may have been talking about the bolt
hole being elongated. Slop can definitely lead to flutter, as can balance.
Very similar to the tailwheel shimmy problem.

Minimum license requirement for any pilot to operate across the border is a
PPL. That includes Canadians heading south ( Snow Birds) and Americans
heading to Alaska.

All of your ideas and thoughts sound good and legit and I guess it's down to
which way do you want to persue it. I could probably go downtown Dallas and get
the guy on the street corner selling passports to give me a bill of sale. Will
probably try Darin's idea first. Leon Morris/Classic 4 Speedster/65%/Flower

Anyone ever do this successfully? Was looking to do some ski flying, but
spending the winter on a frozen lake with a dead battery does not seem
appealing. I think if heard of someone handpropping a 912...but never a
912s.
Any feedback?

I had to replace 3-4 rod end links on mine as well. There was quite a bit of slack
in the controls. It fixed it right up and now it is nice and tight.

Well, not for the first time, but for the first time with me in it as it's new
owner.
I traveled 1100miles in July to go pick it up. Then we had to replace some rod
ends, and inspect everything well. Everything seemed to be ready to go, and
starter problems cropped up. By the time I got it fixed, the weather had turned
bad, then illness set in for a couple of weeks.
I thought we were ready to go with it last weekend, when I found that I was sold
a bad used intercom, and a tach issue. A new TinyTach, and a new intercom,
and it was ready to go today.
My instructor and I flew it for about 2 hours. Did some basic turns, stalls, stuff
like that. The airplane flew well, and ran pretty good except for one slight
misfire on descent. My instructor was very pleased with how it files, and
handles.
I could not be happier to finally get it up in the air, and to start learning on
it. The feel was not all that much different than the gliders I used to fly,
if anything it required less input from the controls.
I would like to thank Larry Huntly once again for all the help he has given me
in this endeavor. Without his input, I would still be sitting on the ramp, scratching
my head.
OK, now for one question about the 582. I think we found the issue was that we
were running the engine way to rich, but I wanted to ask anyway. On the ground
it would not really smooth out till over 2500RPM. In the air at 5200RPM, it
was fine, but on descent around 4000RPM, we felt a couple of stumbles. We were
keeping the setting verry rich, as we did not want the EGT to go above 1100*.
Once on the ground again, we leaned it way out, and were able to get smooth
idle at 1900RPM.
Using the Hacman mixture control, how many turns to the left to lean it out, on
a typical day? The one EGT was reading around 1100* already, the other about
950-1000*. I did not want to get it too hot, but it may be reading a bit high.

Subject: | Tires for Kitfox S-7 |
I have 6.00 x 6 tires which are wearing now and want to go to 8.00 or 8.50 X 6.
The prices range from $50 to $150 or more. Anybody know if the Carslile Turf
Glider 8.00 x 6 is OK. It is advertised on Dresser as an LSA Aircraft tire
but is only rated at 410 lbs. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks all

Congratulations Andrew. Glad to see you persevered. That's a
lot of difference between the two EGT's. First thing I'd do is
reverse the sensors to see if one is reading high of if indeed one
cylinder is that much different. Assuming they're different I'd check
the plugs for a noticeable difference in color between the cylinders.
(I'd check anyway.) If different you'll want to check jetting and for
air leaks, etc.
Regarding the HACman, I don't remember how many turns it is,
but it's a bunch. I don't notice anything for at least three or four
turns, then the EGT's come up seemingly linearly until the knob
bottoms out wide-open. I get about 80F out of it.

Heim was probably the original, or at least one of the first (and
best) of the "spherical rod end bearing" manufacturers. I just never
heard of this device called a spherical "bolt"...which, of course, it
is not...a "bolt" that is.

Do not try to hand prop a 912ULS with it's compression ratio. Like anything else.
You may get away with it or you may not. What's your hand worth to you?
