I do have the forth float bracket. The bush gear bolted to the two that the
original did and the sweep forward is the same as the original gear (ie: the
wheels are in the same position longitudinally)

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions!
I tried again yesterday to paint the fairings with PolyTone and I am going
to abort this! Now they look like a moonscape! I am going by the auto parts
store and get some paint remover and I will use enamel to paint the gear
fairings.Who would think that after all the work installing my gear that simply

painting the fairings would be such a pain in the butt! I want you guys to see
      what
the fairings on the gear look like. They are really nice! Lowell did a
fantastic and time consuming job of making these!
As to the cost of the gear, I will leave that to Lowell or John. Suffice it
to say it was quite a bit cheaper than the Grove and a whole lot lighter! The
Grove gear is a very fine gear and doesn't get any simpler but I was simply
trying to save some money and keep the weight down as I am a lard a*s ! (getting

much thinner though down 20 lbs , 20 to go to goal) Too many people want me
to take them flying so I have to lighten up.
When I was a bit younger everyone at high school had a Cushman Eagle, I had
a Lambretta. Later my first car was a Triumph TR3 everyone else had an
American hot rod. So there you go.
I received my parts from Spruce so that I can extend the brake lines.
Hopefully I can get the aircraft back together today.
Keep in mind that I have not moved or added any weight to my aircraft in
relation to the new gear. I have simply bolted it on as it resides in the same

place as the old gear. The only difference, other than design, is it weighs 4
      lbs less.
I do have a BRS chute canister behind the pax seat which limits my baggage
weight to 10 lbs but that was there when I bought the aircraft.
                                                                    Dick Maddux

      Dick,
Where did you get the gas springs on your doors? My original clips on
the wings work well, but I think I would like to try those.
       Thanx.

Subject: Kitfox-List: new bush landing gear

I recently purchased a new landing gear for my aircraft and installed it the last
two days.It is the "Bush" gear offered by Highwing LLC.

?My aircraft had the original narrow landing gear and it has worked fine since
I bought the aircraft about a 1 1/2 years ago. I had read about some of the possible
problems with the original gear such as hard landings cracking tubes, side
loads folding the gear,etc.. The bungee changing every year or so was also
going to be a pain in the butt. Now my gear has?been fine with no problems but
when I saw the new bush gear that Lowell and Mark were working on,I had to have
it ! I had previously installed the retro elevator?trim kit that his company
offers (as well as the radiator shutters, throttle bug, etc) so I knew the quality
      would be first class.

?I had considered the Grove gear which I know is a fine gear, but I would have to
go thru the expense of changing my axles, brakes and wheels. This would be a
bit sporty in the money department !

?I talked to Lowell and he said he would build me a "bush"?gear which would fit
my original axles, wheels etc and would bolt right on to my fuselage (ie: plug
and play) He also offered to build super deluxe fairings to cover the gear legs.
I agreed and I now have the gear.

?It was indeed a bolt on unit . The quality of the welds and design is fantastic!
      And those aluminum fairings,WOW !

?The old gear legs weighed 13.2 lbs. The Grove gear is advertised at 24 lbs and
this gear with fairings and all weighs 9 lbs !!! and the best part is that it
fits my old axles, brakes and wheels so it saved me a lot of money ! I have no
intent of landing on rocks, logs old cars ,etc so I don't want the larger axles
or 26"?wheels.( I am using the Nanking (sp)?smooth tires) I will use the aircraft
to land at my grass strip, and airport bum at local airports. Now I? could
take this gear off airport as it is certainly very stout !

?Here is the bad part. I have a few pictures of the installation but my main computer
is in for repairs and it has the picture program. I will get it back today
      and send in some pictures.

?In the mean time I have to install longer brake lines and do some other work prior
to flying so it will be a few days before I have a flight report. It sure
does look nice on the aircraft ! Can't wait to fly it!

Thanks, Dick....in looking at both your pictures and Francisco's
pictures I got to thinking that there were no longer 4 sets of float
brackets, but then I looked closer at yours and saw the 4th set.

John, actually My tygon seems to be okay. It was Clem that was asking about the
problem. Being that you have also seen some sort of deterioration in the tygon
I think I will change my vent line to the blue Bing fuel line.

With this gear landing is perfect, like J3 (better)
Before change, landing was dangerous, now is great!!
Less weight, axle more closer than before (4 inches), 5% weight on tail
      Landing become perfect!!!!

      Gary,

I have kept this old posting of yours on my computer,. I am about to start
installing a set of second hand aerocet- amphibs on my Kitfox 3, but I ha
      ve no instructions.

Do you still have the instructions PDFd on your web site, I was unable to a
      ccess it.

      many thanks

Finally tracked down all my Aerocet
documentation. They were tucked in an Aircraft Spruce catalog. -I
have pdf'ed everything and posted them to my web site. -See the address
below. Go to the Aerocet Float folder. -There are three PDF files.
-Two are the installation instructions, one being for the straight
floats and the other for the anphibs. You need both as the anphib guide
takes over where the straight float guide leaves off. -The third pdf
is the exploded assembly drawings and parts listing. - Also included
is the procedure for checking the main gear over centre position, and the
rigging instructions for the cables that operate the gear. -If you
have a set of these floats, download, print and protect these. -They
      really come in handy.

I've lost track of what this plane is...Model IV, 5, 6, 7? The reason
I ask is because in viewing your W&B sheet...Noel forwarded it to
me....it shows the GC range for the planes that are either 1050 or
1200 lbs. Max. Gross Weight, and I would imagine that your plane is a
higher gross weight than either of these. If so, maybe the CG
envelope/range is different than the 10.2" to 16.0" that the form shows.

It=B4s similar KIV with few model V modifications. (speed wing, and Model

You have to be able to deal with ActiveX on his site. It is easier for me to just
post those three files here than coach you through enabling ActiveX controls.

So the three files are here (pay attention to the links below).

I think you're going to be disappointed. The orange peel problem you're having
with Polytone is caused from the relative humidity of the surrounding air being
too high. From my experience, enamel will have the same problem, possibly worse.
Also, unless it is some kind of polyurethane enamel you're likely to get
      cracking on it over fabric.

You've got to paint it inside a shop and use some kind of dehumidificaton. If it
is warmer in the shop than it is outside, the relative humidity will be lower,
presuming the shop has not added additional water to the air from wet floors.

I would follow whatever the kitmakers suggest as far as what W&B
information to follow. Only they will know. They should at least
advise to as to what the max gross weight should be, and where the
forward most, and where the rearward most extremes of the center of
gravity should be located, and from what point (datum point) should
      these measurements be made.

      Dick, and Fransisco,
The thing that strikes me the most when looking at your pictures is that the Bush
Gear makes your airplanes look bigger. I hate it when non airplane people
look at my Kitfox and say, "it sure is Little".

You both know that now I have two items to save up for...a big 4 stroke engine
      AND a Bush gear.

      Pat,
That sounds like a clean installation; but what a problem
for you. Can't say as I see a way around it. Actually there is ONE
trick I learned from my years as a yacht designer. I have, at times,
spaced floating nut plates along long pieces of non-structural
material and slid them into holes as backing plates for deck
structure. You might be able to do the same if you could find the
right access. That way you might be able to cut small holes and still
      get nut plates in.

Heck, I like it even without the fairings (the kitfox brand style), and maybe I
could save some more money without the sheet-metal and tabs. Hopefully Highwing
can beat the grove gear upgrade by more than just $140 like Kitfox does though.

Guess we'll see. I've tried to reach both Mark and Lloyd at Highwing LLC. So,
      maybe I'll hear something soon.

I thought this thread died out, so was not going to post what I found
out today, and that is some interesting info on 3/32" pop rivets.
This quote came from www.bonaero.com/ and I quote:
      ************************

" 3/32" Pop rivets do not posses enough shear strength to
resist the locking torque of the large nut plates. As anybody who has
spun a hidden nut plate will attest, you do not want that to happen
again. Cherry's 3/32" nut plate rivets are steel with retained steel
stems which resist over 100 lbs of single shear load per rivet. "

      ************************
To read that, one has to wonder about the wisdom of using aluminum
pop rivets for the installation of anchor nuts, of course this
warning of aimed at "large nut plates". At the website, there is a
legend for breaking the secret code of the "rivet world".. : )
