Steve,
When I turn the master switch on in my aircraft the Northstar beeps, red
internal light comes on and it indicates GAS followed by the amount in the tanks.
The fuel flow button if pushed shows a blank as the engine is not running.

I have checked my meter several times and it was close enough out of the box that
I have not felt the need to screw with it. I just filled it up with X amount
of gas, went flying for a few hours then I always drain gas out of the tanks
for trailering... What I sucked out of the tank was really dang close to what
the meter said I had remaining.

Has anyone actually dealt with these guys(http://wingtanks.com)? Recently?
Further to my thread a while ago about installing wing tanks in my KF2 I
sent off an email to the only contact info listed on their
site(sales@wingtanks.com). That was about a month ago and I re-sent it a
week ago using a more reliable email server (gmail) just in case, but still
no response.
If anyone has dealt with them in the past - how was the response, service,
support, and the items supplied? And does anyone have an alternative means
of contacting them or know if they are still in business?
Thanks in advance

Dick,
My meter goes through the same routine as yours when I turn on the mater switch
IF it is NOT connected to the transducer. If it is connected to the transducer,
the meter does not turn on. It acts like there is a direct short either in
the 5 pin connector or in the transducer.
I have called Northstar, and listened to their music for 45 minutes, with no human
response from them. I have also sent an email, but no response from that
either.

You might try calling Airdale and ask for Brett 715-369-1343. Airdale is a reseller
for those tanks.

Paul,
The only thing that has had a history in these tanks is Kreem. There is
some contorversy about it largely due to it's tendency to flake off if not
put in properly prepared tanks.
First a rinse with acetone or MEK to prepare the surface, then sloshing
according to the Kreem directions. It has been suggested and, most do, to
dilute the Kreem 50% with MEK before application. Two or three quarts
should do the job on both sides.

Paul,
KREEM is the only compound that has been used and with
varied results. There is another but we have not had the chance to test it.
It is used in many other applications and the manufacture stated that using
it in fiberglass is not a problem and it is ethanol resistant. Give me a
call if you're interested.

Hi John, thanks for jumping in on this,
Checking your parts catalogue on page 54 I see that you only have 6 gallon
tanks for my model II for $440 each. My reason for perusing the
wingtanks.com tanks was that I would gain 13 gallons, which is important to
me; and apparently I would not be removing any struts, only a couple of drag
/ anti-drag tubes which look pretty weak anyway. From the pictures on their
cob-website it looks like a piece of plywood more than makes up for any
torsional loss from those tubes but I was hoping to exchange a few emails
with them on that topic.
However, since they don't respond - I assume your 6 gallon model II tanks
also fit between struts? Has anyone ever installed two 6 gallon tanks in one
wing and/or can it be done?

Well spotted Ryan! I didn't look further down when I saw the "Model
4,5,6,etc". Obviously the larger tank will require removing structure,
especially a strut, but John McB seemed to imply that his tanks are
structurally designed and tested to do that. Hopefully he will add to this
thread to support that, in which case it may be my best option.
Has anyone else installed John's 13 gal tank in a finished Model II yet?

Thanks for the info. I'm going to get a gallon of Kreem and experiment a
little with the dilution. I'll call J McBean for a price. I also found it
at JC Whitney. I have a pair of wing rotisseries I used while building the
wings that I can put back in service to coat the inside of the fuel tanks.
I thought I'd never use them again, but I guess I was wrong.
Thanks again

did you guys try to power up the unit without it being hooked to the ducer first?
or was it hooked to ducer, and would not power up on the initial try? Alot
of instruments don't like to have power to them without the ducer being installed.
If that was the case, and you were impatient and wanted to see what it
would do before the ducer was hooked up, you may have toasted a good instrument.
Don't know for sure if you did or not, just tossing it out there.

Kinda like starting the ol' engine up without a prop, eh Snake, just
to see what she sounds like? A little impatience at the wrong time
might not be a good thing.
Speaking of fuel flow, I was flying today, and even into a 10 mph
wind at about 90 mph, I was able to twist the throttle back to see
2.9 gph on my Northstar Fuel Flow meter. It's surprising how just a
little less throttle will gain so much in fuel economy.

The transducer was connected prior to any test or power up.
I have sent several emails to Northstar requesting help. I have also listened
to the music on their phone line for over an hour, listening to someone continuously
telling me how important my phone call is, and how the next available representative
will be on the line soon. No one ever answered their phone. No
one ever responded to any email.
Today, in total frustration, I cut the 5 pin connector off the line and hard wired
the transducer to the meter. Still the same result. When the transducer
is connected to the meter all power is lost. When the transducer is disconnected
from the meter the meter works great. I am convinced there is a dead short
in the transducer.
I have removed the transducer from the fuel line and am planning on returning the
entire unit and will ask for a replacement.

Did you try it with the engine running? Might need to initialize with fuel flow
first.
