Kitfoxers, This morning I received replies from a number of people about
a message that I had never seen or heard of. The message was from an
AABC company for sales of electronic equipment. Somehow it was
forwarded and sent through my computer to all addresses in my address
book.
I repeat I have never seen the message previously.

Clint: I found your discription and tried it. It did seem to make the start easier
and smoother. Thank you.
Pete: Here is a copy of Clint's latest version:
Hi All, I know that a lot of you have been using my start up procedures. It
has worked for me a long time. I have worked out a lot beter sytem that has been
in use by me for over 80 hours and it's great. Very similar to old one. 1)
Ignition off 2) Throttle closed 3) Pull choke and crank engine for 3 or 4 seconds
4) Ignition on/ Open throttle 1 1/4 turns / Keep choke pulled and crank engine
5) Release choke after engine starts and warm up 3000 RPM's or so This system
works very well, and the holding the choke does a little and stops false
starts which happen on occasion.

Here is part of my check list. You can use as much as 10 sec of choke (no
t really=2C enrichment) on cold mornings.
Before Starting Engine
Exterior Preflight COMPLETE
Seat=2C Belts=2C Shoulder Harnesses-Adjust and LOCK.
Fuel Shutoff Valve- On
All switches. Breakers and avionics switch off
Fuel Selector valve in the on position
Cold Start
Throttle at idle
Ignition Switch A & B in off position
Pull choke while engaging starter for 5 seconds
Turn veneer throttle cw 1 =BC turns and wait 60 seconds
Ignition A & B on
Engage starter (Engine should start immediately then reduce
engine rpm=92s to 2500 for warm up). If engine starts shaking=2C
turn Ign A & B off immediately=2C wait 60 seconds and go to 3.
(Cold Start)
h. Check oil pressure=2C minimum 30 psi 15 seconds
Hot Start
Engine has been running and has been shut down for less then
20 minutes
Throttle at idle
Turn veneer throttle cw 1 =BC turns
Ignition A & B on
Engage starter (Engine should start immediately then reduce Engine
rpm=92s to idle=2C ( 1500 and above). If engine starts shaking turn
Ign
A & B off immediately=2C wait 60 seconds and go to 3. (Cold Start)

Clint=2C I would be interested in your starting procedure and I did a searc

Check back on the threads on this list. My startup procedure will stop all
that.

I'm preparing to reinstall my prop and I'm ready to torque the AN5-10
bolts. The torque values off the standard chart are for 180-220 inch
lbs. The manual that came with the prop says 150 inch lbs. I'll
probably go by the manual, but it makes me wonder about this big 40 inch
lb spread on the chart values. When faced with a big spread, which way
is the recommended direction to go. Go with the lesser, somewhere in
between, or the higher number? Also, I'm using a crow foot adapter.
Does that make any difference to the values? Inquiring minds would like
to know...

Subject: | Re: Torque values |
the reference chart is to be used when the manufacture has not provided a specific
torque spec. Always use the manufactures recommendations if provided.
A torque wrench is calibrated to be accurate when not using a crowsfoot, handle
extension or any other modification to the tool. If you use a crowsfoot, you
can mathematically convert the reading to take the added leverage provided by
the crowsfoot into account, but be careful when doing that, mistakes are easy
to make, and you could over torque the bolt very easily.

The specification that accompanies the prop is the one most relevant. These torque
settings are from engineering design. That said, the engineer usually specifies
the
torque allowed for the bolt so I would check with the prop manufacturer's engineering
dept to make certain of their intentions.

If the crows foot is 90 deg to the wrench handle then it will not make a difference
as
long as you carefully push the handle on the center pivot.

"In Washington, one person's waste is another person's pork. Every
dime spent by the federal government has well-connected advocates
who swear the money is vital to the national interest. ... It's not
that people in government aren't as good or competent as those in
the private sector (though that may be true). The difference lies in
the incentives and feedback they face. Bureaucracies have little
check on what they do, no bottom line, no market prices for their
'output.' What they do have is an incentive to spend all the money
budgeted or risk getting less next year. As Milton Friedman used to
say, no one spends other people's money as carefully as he spends
his own. It is absurd to think the humongous constellation of
federal bureaucracies is going to identify and root out 'waste' in
any significant way. It's just not in the nature of the beast."

Gary - have you recently read an e-mail from the Kitfox List? Every single one
has
this message appended. I'll quote it here but go to the end of this message and
you'll
see it has been added by the list software.
List Un/Subscription,
That's why I'm against wasting the space on the e-mail about this, people just
get
used to seeing it but never read it. So why bother?
