Randy , I am not sure if it is high pressure or not there. I have done tuft testing there and the tufts lift up in front the cap and the rest go around it . I know once I was transferring fuel from wing tanks to dash tank and I overfilled it , the gas was coming out the pitot tube and spraying on the windshield. Nut sure what that tells you other than I am a dunce. I don't think I would want to take a chance on siphoning having a open vent on the cap. > Bob, > That area on top of the cowling ahead of the windshield is a high pressure > area. All, I built a Model 4 XL with a Rotax 503 some years back that had a ten gallon aluminum dash tank that I built and two six gallon wing tanks. Wing tanks had standard fuel caps with pitots and shutoffs at the wing root ribs. They each feed into one of two top ports in the dash tank. Dash tank had a filler cap that protruded up through the cowl and the cap was not vented (No over flow spillage if I overfilled while transferring from my wing tanks). Dash tank had a vent port from the top of the tank to the top port on the right wing tank. Dash tank had a 12 volt float system with a gauge on the dash. I would fly until I was at half tank on the dash tank and then transfer from one wing tank or the other, the amber lines feeding the dash tank ran down each door post so I was able to see the fuel flow. Some times in flight fuel did not want to flow so I would put the plane into a forward slip with that wing high to get it started. I discovered later if I was to transfer some from each tank so the lines were full and then shut off the valves it would begin flowing better once in flight. Lloyd, My poly tank has no vent built into it but I think you need to have a vent somewhere or you could starve for gas. I have a shut off for each with tank so if they both shut off I have no venting at all on dash tank. So it seems necessary to have a vent and in my case the pitot serves the purpose. His videos have trikes in them. And his Spanish speaking wife. In my experience with usenet, maillists, forums, bogs and the like, it usually provokes ill will in one or more people if you take any kind of a potshot at anyone. Pretty often it happens that what was said was incorrect or based on misinterpretation. The old terminology for this dialogue damaging scenario is flame wars. Some people are really skilled at constructive criticism like Deke. Some are always tactful like Lowell or Noel. I've decided these are personally developed skills. I can't do what Deke does but I can contribute some facts now and then. Anyway, best not taking pot shots at people. They could just get embarrassed or even mad and irritated and then we lose them. That's not so good for anyone. BTW, on the two stroke oil issue, many years ago I researched this quite extensively and I seem to recall that at the time, there were approved fully synthetic oils for 100:1 use. I can't remember if that was for premix or automixing. I also seem to recall that the injection rate can be changed by changing oils. that is without making any adjustments to the engine, the mix can change maybe with viscosity. Well, I can't find that info anymore so it might be a wrong recollection. As to Amsoil, whether or not is is any good, the Amway-like marketing scheme turns me off enough that I would never consider those products. I just probably turned the flame gun on myself. :( -- Paul A. I know of some list members who swiched from a Rotax 912 to 912 S 100hp engine in a Classic 1V before. Is there any major modifications to the frame or engine mounts or cowling to perform in order to do that? Secondly, is it worthed the the expense in terms of performance? I have converted from a 912IUL to a 912ULS in 1999. The only problem with a 912ULS is the forward engine mounts are approx 1/8 to 3/16 inch further f orward. The oil tank is a little higher in the ULS. I used my old tank an d gave the new tank to the new owner. I use slightly different power setti ngs as I have an IVO prop. Just curious, what Amsoil are you planning to use? While they do not provide detailed oil use information on their website they do indicate oil usage at 100:1 or richer and most of their 100:1 oils appear to specify 50:1 in premix. I have never seen even the very best 2 stroke oils, synthetic or conventional (mineral) cause problems when used at engine makers specified ratio including very rich 20:1 in an engine with plain bearings. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rawheels" <rawheels@yahoo.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 07, 2009 5:03 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: Re: Oil injection conversion > > For anyone who does a future search on this topic. Found the tags... Lots of guys used to use meta tags to try to increase traffic to their sites. I have no idea why any one would want extra traffic unless they were getting paid for banners. Never th4e less it doesn't mean he produces them just that more people may look at his clips hoping to see a little mile high. What happens at idle? Do you get a zero reading? It would seem to me that the capacity range would be more ideal if it were from 0.1 to 10 gal/hr. I don't know what to do for fuel gauges. The wing tanks I have are aluminum but fairly flat and the are aligned parallel with the bottom of the wing so no float type gauge is going to work especially in the top or bottom quarter of the tank and in between it would be so non-linear that wouldn't work. I could put site glasses on them but that would mean disconnecting the lines to them to remove my wings. The other alternative is to use the full immersion type sensor that you can calibrate but that would cost %500/tank or more. So I considering using just one of these flow sensors, keeping track of fill points. might be a problem is you just add some fuel but don't fill the tanks. Not sure if you could reset the gauge to a particular setting. Must be more than one of you has thought through this problem. Even if you haven't finished the process, your ideas so far would be appreciated. -- Paul A. at 1600 rpm idle it shows a steady .5 GPH. It will cover you for all that you need in the plane. As with any instrument, it will have a range that it is most accurate in, but lets be realistic, you will probably start up and idle for 5 minutes or so till she's warm, then you will be well above the the range specified for flight, then maybe 5 or 6 minutes of idle time to land and taxi in and shut down. The fuel burned in that small amount of time is not really going to affect you measurements, as you reset the fuel on board each time you fill up or put gas in (at least I do) and that means for me every flight. I don't fill the tanks to the brim when I am planning a short flight of say an hour. Why have 6 hrs of fuel on board. I put in what I need, and a little reserve for each flight. -------- DO NOT ARCHIVE Leonard Perry aka SNAKE Soldotna AK Avid "C" / Mk IV 582 IVO IFA Full Lotus 1260 #1 snake oil salesman since 1-22-2009 hander outer of humorless darwin awards Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=238417#238417
