Dave,
Tiny tach has built in hour meter if you do not have one already plus I find them
very accurate. The Rotax supplied Tachs I have found to be erratic.

Erratic... Dave you have a gift of the understatement! Mine read a
consistent 20% too high across the board. Getting my plane off the water
was always tricky and I didn't have any big hills or trees to worry about,
not to mention the pond is only about eight feet above high tide.
On installing the Tiny Tach the plane became a real performer. Takeoffs
became thrilling. Initial climbs were just under 2000'/min and sustained
climb to two thousand feet was just over a thousand feet a minute using an
Ivo IFA prop.
My advice is take the kitfox tach out, cut two notches in it and call it an
ashtray.

To each his own, I guess. I, as well, found the Rotax Tach, or at least the
one supplied with the early kits to fluctuate with temperature. Winter, one
reading, Summer, another. I bought an inexpensive model airplane optical
tach, glued a conversion chart on it's back (a little spreadhseet work) and
mounted a thumb wheel over the adjustment screw on the panel tach and could
and did calibrate the original tach regularly - while in flight. For some
reason I like the looks of the round instruments, especially the glance at
the analog dial telling me what I needed to know without interpreting tiny
numbers, and the traditional look of the panel. It worked for me.

I like the tiny tach, I have nothing against the Rotax one either. I was
more thinking of this one device and what might be inside a piece of
squashed tube that would accomplish the desired task. I figure there a a
number of Schottky diodes in TO-220 package that would fit.

You can just get an AC tach and splice in a wire to it from the coil output. This
way power only goes to the meter when the engine is running. That is the
way my brothers kitfox was set up. When I was replacing the voltage regulator
on his, I glanced at the wire going through the fire wall and thought to myself...
dang, there is nothing in the plane that runs off AC so I snipped the wire
and put heat shrink on it..... then we noticed the hour meter no longer worked.
I dug into it a little deeper, traced the wire and felt like an idiot..
It really is not too bad feeling that way, I am getting used to it.

Occom,
They are all API-TC certified, but I have been using the Amsoil Saber Pro 100:1.
The idea was that it was twice as expensive as the Pennzoil, but you used half
as much. When I get back to 50:1 for the oil injection, I could use the same
or go to the HP or Intercepter which are designed as 50:1, but they are almost
the same price. That being said, if I am going to pay the extra money (which
I will do, since I do not care for the Pennzoil), then I might as well look
at the others mentioned (XPS, Citgo, etc) since they would now be equal in
price or even cheaper per gallon.

Are the BPM XP-S/XPS Synthetic and Mineral oils compatible with each other? Meaning,
could you run the synthetic during the main flying season to capitalize
on it's properties, and then start using the mineral oil just before the "slow"
season to help with corrosion?

Switching kinds does not give rise to compatibility problems it's mixing them that
is
the problem. There may be some incompatible additives in various motor oils so
mixing
those oil types in a batch could be the problem but when there is only a trace
amount
of one left over during a change of type, there is no problem.

Whether or not there is a difference in corrosion resistance between full synthetic
and straight mineral oil it is of little concern compared to protecting bearing
surfaces and cylinder walls from condensation. Keeping the engine warm and dry
is a
far more significant anti-corrosion factor than worrying about the slight difference
in residual oil coating remaining between synthetic and mineral oil.
I believe best practice is to store an unused engine out of the weather and if
it is
not going to be used for an extended period of time, then misting the internals
with
oil is best practice. If the air in and around the engine is only a few degrees
warmer
than the ambient outside air temperature, it will almost certainly be above the
dew
point and therefore, no condensation will occur. Usually the coldest time of the
day
is night time and even an unheated hangar will be warmer at night than outside
so that
really reduces the chance of condensation. The heat from a 60W light bulb inside
a
closed engine cowling will keep the air inside considerably warmer than ambient
and
therefore above dew point.
I think the most important factor for selecting a two stroke oil for a relatively
expensive engine such as a Rotax or a boat motor is first getting one that produces
the least fouling on the piston crown and rings and in the exhaust system then
wear
protection would be the next biggest consideration. For me, using 100LL (Avgas)
in
these engines would be out of the question. In fact, even thinking of it, gives
me a
headache.

Extreme Fuel Injection will be at Sun and Fun with the Just Aircraft Group. Come
check out Fuel injected engines in person. So far only 1 person has put a extreme
914 in a kitfox, but I'm hoping get more interest.
