I got 166 statute miles into the trip....1hr, 20 min. from the mountains, and had to turn back due to clouds covering the earth with no holes in sight. I gotta tell ya, that's a puckering feeling to be 9,500' MSL, and all the dark spots that I'd hoped to be holes turned out to be shadows of clouds. I had gone up as high as I felt comfortable with to see better...man, was it smooth up there....but the dark areas didn't pan out, and after 45 minutes of that behavior, it was time to call it off, and come back home. Speed going was 120-130mph ground, and 70-90mph ground on the return leg, making that return leg a bit long until land once again showed up. It was nice to see the ground again, even if it was Ohio. : ) I had tuned into some ATIS reports along the way and the ceiling was reported as 1200 feet at most of them...not a good time to be flying, but this was the window that presented itself, and now it's closed for me. Let's see, that makes 3 aborted trips to Florida, and 2 aborted trips to Virginia....stinkin' weather anyway! I do have to say however, that getting up above the clouds makes for a very smooth, hands-off ride. From: "Summers, Mark" I bought a C box with the slip clutch recently, just realized the gear ratio is 3.47 would this ratio be an issue for a 582 with 66 inch three blade IVO ground adjustable prop. Thanks Mark -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Harold McConnell Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 10:25 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: IVO in-flight adjustable, is it a good option? I am contemplating adding the in-flight adjustable option to my IVO two blade medium prop. How are those of you who are already using the optional feature getting along with it. I would be using it on my Kitfox 3 with a Rotax 582 and C gear box with a 3:1 ratio. I am very interested in hearing of your experiences with this set-up. I was looking forward to seeing another KitFox. I built a Model II but sold it. Maybe next year uh. I think with that reduction you will want a bigger prop. With slow turning props bigger is generally better. You can use one of the blade tip speed calculators to make sure the tips won't go supersonic on you at max rpm..
